I feel so ashamed I need to do something

Had some results yesterday from the recurrent miscarriage clinic and they outlined some health reasons why I should have IVF.

Only issue is I can't have IVF until my bmi is 30 and it's currently 49 😳 I spent all day yesterday crying, but today I feel like thats not helpful?

I need to change but I don't know how. I'm 27 and I weigh 19 stone 7 pounds, I can't have a baby until I'm at least 13 stone, I know I did this to myself but I don't know where to start to get rid of it.

I started the couch to 5k thing today and nearly died! But I have to do this. I can't not do this. I've also downloaded les mills on demand to try and do some workouts at home?

I'm so ashamed I got myself into this mess.

If you can, get yourself a fitbit or similar tracker and get walking! Make sure you do at least 30 active minutes a day and complete a minimum of 10,000 steps. You can combine this with C25K, but the walking will help with the running as well.

Combined with a sustainable eating plan, you can absolutely do this. Log everything you eat with My Fitness Pal. You can start immediately by cutting out things like biscuits and cake. I have been dieting this year and was amazed at how many mindless biscuit related calories I could consume whilst waiting for the kettle to boil!

Good luck!

PonderingPanda · 17/07/2019 07:26

I have done so many diets over the years... they all work IF l stick at them.

For rapid loss though the best one l found was New You. It worked for me as they supply all the food that's needed which took the pressure off me to weigh, measure etc.

It's not for everyone as it's a VLC keto diet and it's certainly not a long term diet but it will get quick results.

Please inbox me if anyone wants any info. They have websites and FB groups though for info.

FattyPedalsFuriously0hPipNo · 17/07/2019 07:30

Whole30 looks quite good if your diet has lots of crap in it, 30 day programme to reset your body/food desires etc. If eating healthily already then calorie counting can be good. Whichever way you do it, try and do it with support. If you can try to address the underlying psychological issue at the same time, well done on starting couch to 5k.

Alarmclockstop · 17/07/2019 07:34

Sorry not rtft, but I know it's not trendy any more but weight watchers (or slimming world) really works. Ww has an app with a forum/community and I have found it has made such a difference, and it is educating me on what I can have.

Tiredtessy · 17/07/2019 07:35

I done coach to 5k and thought I was going to die (was probs nearly 2 stone over weight) anyway with that and weight watchers, a stone fell off easily, I still had toast and tea in the morning then salads for lunch and dinner. The only way I can keep weight off is by less food and running and you need to excercise to be healthy so do not stop running

Dillydallyalltheway · 17/07/2019 07:37

This is exactly the same as my daughter is going through and it’s heart breaking. She has started doing SlimmingWorld and is doing really well on it. You will get there especially if you always remind yourself why you are doing this. Is your hubby/wife/partner overweight as well? You could do it together. I promise you there are so many recipes and ideas on the net for delicious meals and snacks. Look at pinch of nom on Facebook. Lots of love and encouragement to you, you will get there in the end

Cazziebo · 17/07/2019 07:39

I don't disagree that weight loss occurs because of improving diet, but please don't underestimate the physical and mental benefits of exercise. Just walking can improve mood and make you less likely to seek out empty calories.

Myriade · 17/07/2019 07:40

@ReadyToLoseThisJelly, please go and see a nutritionist.
Getting information from MN is all well and good (and it’s great to get support too!) but you need appropriate advice and someone to give you.
Believe me, having done the same and thinking I KNEW what I was supposed to do, I realised that actually I didn’t know everything and some of the stuff I was doing was actually detrimental.

I also learnt that, for example, stress makes insulin levels spike so doing stuff to relaxed helped but pushing myself to go to the gym when i really didn’t want to was a hindrance. (And yes it did work to stop that).

It’s a lot of weight to loose but on the other side, you WILL be able to do it

Myriade · 17/07/2019 07:42

Btw the big issue is that you will find many many diets and many many contradictory advice non the Internet (and MN!).
Knowing what is or isn’t a good idea or do can be hard and confusing.

I also believe that there is no point doing a DIET to loose weight. What you need is to change the way you are eating for life! So you can stay a healthy weight and be well.

bookworm14 · 17/07/2019 07:44

I think you should be more concerned about the Huntington’s to be honest. Are you aware of the implications of you or your DH having the gene? Did one of your parents have the condition?

randomchap · 17/07/2019 07:44

My wife lost the amount of weight that you want to lose with SW. She kept it all off too. Good luck with it

quietcontentment · 17/07/2019 07:45

OP, you do know how to change, the concept it simple, BUT, implementing it and keeping it up is the hard work.
You need to work just as hard on your state of mind and rallying up support as you the task itself.

All the best OP, I'm sure you'll get their if you give yourself a good chance.

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 17/07/2019 07:49

My sympathies OP - we have Huntington's in my family too, unfortunately we only found out when my dad started displaying odd symptoms, and I'd already had the DC by this point. Luckily the genetic tests were clear.

My Fitness Pal is a great start for losing weight, as PP have said. I wish you all the luck in the world on your journey.

Yogurtcoveredricecake · 17/07/2019 07:50

I'd have a research of different diets (loads suggested here) so see what might suit you. In the meanwhile you could keep a food diary to see where you might be eating too much or the wrong sort of food. Trying to move more every day is important too so a brisk walk at lunchtime or after work could help too.

CorBlimeyGovenor · 17/07/2019 07:50

Right, come on OP. Pick yourself up. You're only 27! Just think how different things could be in a couple of years. It is perfectly possible to lose 3 stone in six months. Sign up to slimming world or weight watchers (most drs will give you free vouchers for 3 months worth if overweight). Diet more than exercise works. Also hypnotherapy cd re mindful/emotional eating. Identify when you eat the most out of boredom/emotional eating and then create a strategy around this (i.e. if evenings, read a book in the bath or in bed - so you're not sat watching TV with the kitchen close by). Put up posters of where you want to be in 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, 2 years. Look up recipes online 'pinch of nom' etc. Loads of great support groups online too. You have a great incentive. Good luck, but strike whilst the iron is hot!

sneakypinky · 17/07/2019 07:52

Diets don't work.

Get a Fitbit, record everything, and make sure you eat less than you burn. Every single diet is a fancy version of eat less food / burn more calories.

Getting a Fitbit and recording everything thing shows you exactly what you're doing.

Catsandchardonnay · 17/07/2019 07:52

Bless you. Please don’t feel ashamed. You’ve gone through so much, it’s not surprising that you’ve gained weight. But now you have a wonderful incentive to lose it! Echo what PPs have said, diet is very important. Get rid of all the unhealthy food from your house, eat lots of fruit and veg. Put an incentive note for yourself on your fridge.

And well done you for starting couch to 5k! Make sure you get out there and train in between the sessions too.

Not RTFT so apologies if someone has already mentioned this, but would you qualify for surgery such as a gastric band?

Very best of luck. I hope you’ll be reporting back to us in a couple of years with a baby pic Flowers

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 17/07/2019 07:52

Also, Bookworm makes a very good point - who carries the mutant gene? Have you received appropriate counselling about the potential implications?

BertieBotts · 17/07/2019 07:57

I also found c25k hard going at first. Stay on week 1, day 1 until you can complete it. There is no shame in that. I also did Gillian Michael's 30 day shred, and just did as much of level 1 as I could until I felt as though I would pass out and stopped. I didn't do it daily, just as part of 3x per week, and I stayed on level 1 again until I fel I could complete it. I never actually moved to level 2 Blush but you could if you get there. It is just about building up from where you are now.

BertieBotts · 17/07/2019 08:01

I don't know much about Huntingdon's but would it be an option to keep trying naturally in the meantime and have a CVS test done as soon as possible to screen for the gene? Of course that has its own implications, but might be an option. Or it may be that there is an NIPT test which can cover it (I think the more unusual ones sometimes need to be send abroad).

BlueSkiesLies · 17/07/2019 08:01

At that weight I would do something drastic like a VLCD eg Cambridge or Xante rather than tinkering with my fitness pal or attempting C25K.

pollypenguin01 · 17/07/2019 08:03

Bless you OP, it’s really hard!

I know just how you feel but you need to stop beating yourself up and accept that you’re worth better than crappy food and over eating. You deserve to be healthy and fit so now you need to do something about it.

MFP is excellent for tracking calories, I’ve also just downloaded the NHS weightloss tracker that you can use to measure all the weightloss/inches lost/total daily calories and it gives some really good advice.

Zombies!Run has been a real motivator for me to get running. You start with the Zombies!Run couch to 5k then stick with the main Zombies!Run and it’s excellent for running motivation. I used to loathe running and being honest it’s still not the best thing in the world but it’s bearable with the interactive stories.

Good luck Flowers

BlueSkiesLies · 17/07/2019 08:03

Although re exercise - it’s harder to eat if you are out and about rather than sitting in front of the TV - so making the most of the light evenings and getting out and about for a brisk walk and some fresh air would so you wonders

LuckyLou7 · 17/07/2019 08:04

Don't be ashamed. So sorry for your loss. Weight Loss Resources is a good website although you have to pay - very supportive message board there though.

Would it be worth talking to your GP about a gastric band, as other posters have suggested?

I wish you well on your journey. Take care of yourself.

Bellaposey · 17/07/2019 08:06

OP so much of infertility or sub fertility is out of our control. This is something you can do, you can control! You can do it!
