In your opinion. Just interested.

Lola surely, the whole point of encasing that gloriously decadent cheese, onion and potato filling delicately in puff pastry is just SO one can eat it ‘about town’ ? Grin

That was always my logic, but not so. Apparently baked items are to be bought and consumed in an eatery or in the comfort of one's home because eating on the street was common.

Amusingly fish and chips was always the exception. I never did understand that.

Eustasiavye · 13/07/2019 08:36

Regarding books. When I'm over house I gave away a large amount of books and several bookcases for that matter.
There is now such a device called a kindle, yes really.
It's what modern folk use to read books.
Saves lots of room, avoids destroying our beautiful world and is far easily to take on one's holiday.

Honeysuckleandroses · 13/07/2019 09:13

I’d agree with big TVs and no books. Kindles just aren’t the same. Nothing like having a physical book in your hands.
HD brows and fake tans. Bikinis which don’t cover buttocks.

ooooohbetty · 13/07/2019 09:17

I love my kindle. I didn't think I would but I do. So much easier on holiday rather than having 5 or 6 books weighing down luggage.

CitadelsofScience · 13/07/2019 09:28

People have big TVs because they are quite often cheaper. I saw one last week, 55" and it was under £300 for a smart tv.

So I really don't think having a big tv makes you common these days.

ethelfleda · 13/07/2019 10:28

I have a 50” TV AND lots of books which I never get time to read

findingmyfeet12 · 13/07/2019 10:51

Big TVs aren't an indicator of anything imo. Its not as though the only content available is game shows and Jeremy Kyle. TVs might have been looked down upon in the days before so much quality contact was available at home.

Having said the I don't have a TV at the moment. I do plan to buy one as soon as I've finished decorating though.

Lolwhat · 13/07/2019 10:58

People who spell drawer as ‘draw’ on selling pages. Saw someone try and sell a ‘Chester draw’ once

Chloe9 · 13/07/2019 10:58

People who drink their wine mixed with lemonade from a mug or the large plastic cup that comes from a protein shaker, or if neat then straight from the bottle. Screw top not cork obviously, unless somebody has a clipper lighter to open it with.

Middle class means wine glasses and a cork screw.

Chloe9 · 13/07/2019 10:59

Big TVs are no longer a decider IMHO

formerbabe · 13/07/2019 11:18

People who use 'his' instead of 'he's'

Gooigi · 13/07/2019 12:49

*So reading ebooks instead of physical books is 'common' now? Even though the contents of the book is the same?

findingmyfeet12 · 13/07/2019 12:55

I only read paper books because I pick them up for pennies at charity shops and boot sales.

I guess that makes me common as muck!

Thefemalekeithrichards · 13/07/2019 13:16

Making an ‘uuuuuhhhh’ sound instead of saying ‘pardon/sorry Ididn’t hear you or even what?’ Makes my blood boil

sue51 · 13/07/2019 13:42

Saying pardon.

Middle class means wine glasses and a cork screw.

Middle class means knowing enough about wine to not be a snob about screw tops. Corked wines is a big issue and the industry have been looking at alternatives to cork for years. Screw tops are much more practical than synthetic corks (which are harder to remove than natural corks) and are completely acceptable for wines that don't need bottle aging (i.e. most wine that most of us drink). Even some of the top vineyards in Bordeaux are looking at the impact on the aging of the wine with screwtops (although those wines are not available to buy with screwtops yet and probably won't be for years and years).

Ilovemypantry · 13/07/2019 17:20

@TopiaryTractorTart

Oh dear, you have just given yourself the “common” label.

ethelfleda · 13/07/2019 18:11

CountFosco
I like to buy whatever is on offer in Morrison’s Grin

Cloudsurfing · 13/07/2019 18:27

Fake tans
Kids called Aiden/Hayden/Jayden etc
Massive white Landrovers on finance when you live in a town
Bad/cheap hair highlights/balayage (looks like you forgot to do your roots!)
Those huge dark block eyebrows
Full make up every day even to do the school run
Fake London accents
Drinking in the streets
Spitting in the street (even when doing exercise, it is never acceptable in public)
'Kids dinners' i.e. chicken nuggets and chips or equivalent every day

Cloudsurfing · 13/07/2019 18:43

Also:
Smoking
Vaping
Babies wearing headbands (not only do they look ridiculous but they are also dangerous)
Wearing sports clothes around town when you are not exercising
Wearing leggings without a dress or long top
Wearing crop tops when you are well out of your teenage years

Wow I could go on...

costacoffeecup · 13/07/2019 21:35

I don't think there's much of a distinction anymore to be honest. Certainly nothing to do with money or assets in this day and age.

I suspect it's down to education levels at a push. So generally tertiary educated - not common. As long as it's a decent university. But what does common even mean? It's a bit of a shit way to to feel superior to someone isn't it?

GunpowderGelatine · 13/07/2019 21:46

My mum is obsessed with what makes a person “common” and top of her list is:

  • Using different coloured pegs on the same items of washing on the line
  • hand wash left as is on the sink (so not decanted into a naice reusable hand wash container). Especially the Carex one with fish on it
  • Leather sofas
  • toilet paper that isn’t white
  • Fake Christmas trees

I am guilty of all of the above

Val5555 · 13/07/2019 21:47

People who don’t pick up their dogs shit.
