Friend called me a selfish idiot?

Apparently it was a half joke so I can’t be offended but I’m still a bit wide eyed.
Long (possibly boring) story short: we have bought a new house, we currently live in a small 3 bedroom and have bought a 4 bedroom which does have larger rooms throughout.
My friend was round for coffee and asked how it was all going so I told her we actually had an offer accepted etc.
She then said because I only have 1 child we were being selfish for buying a house where all the bedrooms won’t be used, I don’t know why but I felt myself trying to justify partly by saying that I work from home so one of the rooms would be an office, she then pointed out that we’d still have a spare and this was idiotic and unfair.
Am I missing something and being unreasonable for wanting a bigger house even though we won’t be adding to our family?

So you have your room, DC room, an office and a spare for visitors. What the hell is selfish or weird about that Confused

Tell her you can aford it so why not splash out, and you're considering an extension, decking and a hot tub watch her turn green

Your friend sounds like an idiot

echt · 07/07/2019 00:10

Apparently it was a half joke so I can’t be offended Always the first line of defence by the unconscionably rude.

She's jealous.

I support *Cornball's suggestion.:o

SoleBizzz · 07/07/2019 00:13

Your so called friend is a jealous selfish cunt . Cares about your feelings not a jot.
Have a massive house warming party and don't invite it. Then ignore it forever

HappyLoneParentDay · 07/07/2019 00:20

@Hirsutefirs Only in social housing you clown!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 OP has bought her new house!

Hithere12 · 07/07/2019 01:09

HappyLoneParentDay

Is this aimed at me? Hmm at least spell my username right before you call me a clown you moron.

And actually there is a chronic housing shortage in the PRIVATE SECTOR. Have you been living under a rock!? How can someone in 2019 not know that. It’s smaller houses that are most in demand.

everyoneisasleepbutme · 07/07/2019 01:15

She's pissed off you have more money than she thought and preferred when she felt wealthier than you.

Ihatehashtags · 07/07/2019 01:18

Very jealous and not very nice at all

Grumpelstilskin · 07/07/2019 01:42

Tell her she sounds like a jealous cunt. In a joking way... Wink

floribunda18 · 07/07/2019 03:21

Some people like to have spare rooms so that others can come and stay with them, funnily enough.

BadLad · 07/07/2019 03:48

She's obviously mad and jealous, but there are sometimes threads along those lines on mumsnet, especially if a house has a nice garden but no child to run around in it.

Skittlesandbeer · 07/07/2019 03:59

Haven’t RTFT, but if I had a ‘friend’ like this, I’d make sure I had some moodboards and technical drawings laying around next time she is over. For the massive house extension you’re planning... make sure all the bedrooms have en-suites and walk in robes too, ok?

I've never come across this, and I have three gardens and no child to run around in it. However my dog runs round the garden(s) like an utter loon and shits all over the place, so I suppose this would let me off. :o

YANBU, a spare guest room and a spare 'where am I going to put all this crap' room should be mandatory for anyone who has even one kid lol.

mathanxiety · 07/07/2019 04:26

You have a friend who doesn't understand How Life Works.

Maybe find some new friends.
