To call my dog Blanche?

I posted on here a few days ago regarding getting a Boxer or a Doberman. I went to see the Doberman puppies yesterday and fell in love. DH is coming back with me today and we’re likely to be reserving one.

Dog will be ready to come home in 3 weeks.

I don’t like traditional dog names and when we were looking at getting a boxer I was going to call her Blanche.

WIBU to keep this name for a Dobie?? It doesn’t seem to fit as well! But I can’t think of anything else!

I remember hearing once that you should want a name with sharp sounds in it for a dog. Apparently it makes it easier for the dog to hear and recognise their own name.

I love human names on pets :) You name your dog whatever you want OP! Blanche on a dark dog wouldn't make me bat an eyelid, but you might want to consider some names which fit your preferred theme that have harder sounds to them. Ethel? The E at the front is quite sharp!

Zaphodsotherhead · 05/07/2019 10:29

For dogs I like a name with a 'hard' sound in it, B or D or T or J, something that you can satisfactorily shout. 'Soft' names like Willow don't have that 'ear catching' quality that you sometimes need over half a mile.

My current dog is called Teal. She can hear it over quite a distance, although she pretends not to.

Grace is nice...

Ijustwanttoretire · 05/07/2019 10:33

Definitely Maureen. Mind you looking for them in the park and shouting "Derek, Maureen" would make me think you'd lost your parents. Am I one of the few people left in this world who think giving a dog a human name is all wrong? If I had a doberman I'd call it Fang...

wheelywheelynice · 05/07/2019 10:36

I vote for Mavis!
Or Mabel - after Neneh Cherry's daughter who is also a singer.

DontCallMeShitley · 05/07/2019 10:37

Gertrude or Alice

MyGastIsFlabbered · 05/07/2019 10:53

I care...and demand to see photos of DDog!

TheTitOfTheIceberg · 05/07/2019 10:58

(Ijustwanttoretire I personally prefer non-human names for my pets (my dogs were called Merlin, Shadow and Bandit - oh, and Bobby, but he was a rescue so we kept it - and my pony was Panda) but I'm entering into the spirit of the OP's theme Grin

Nora or Ethel would be excellent with Derek.

*For anyone expecting a black and white pony, Panda was in fact palomino. Go figure Confused Grin

I would only use this name on a white dog. It just sounds like a white dog name to me.

Grin Grin Grin
maybe because of the actual meaning of the word?

I like it, one of my dogs has a human name. Blanche on a doberman is fine, just say you went for the ironic meaning. Unlike a child, the dog actually won't care about their name.

CocoLoco87 · 05/07/2019 11:03

Another vote for Maureen, Mavis or Vera!

NotTheMrMenAgain · 05/07/2019 11:08

I know a horse called Nigel Smile. Please not Maureen! Willow sounds like a cat to me, because I've known several Willow-cats.

How about Dorothea - Dotty or Doris for short?

Derek and Dotty/Doris sound like an old married couple Smile

paap1975 · 05/07/2019 11:10

What about Bianca - still means white, but maybe a little less obvious

SegregateMumBev · 05/07/2019 11:13

Love Nora! Also Mavis, Doris and Mabel.

MoreOfADogPerson · 05/07/2019 11:15

Nora has the advantage of being able to shout 'Bloody Nora!!' when she (inevitably) does something annoying.

Hotterthanahotthing · 05/07/2019 11:18

Gertie,so a passing nod at size too.

Caspianberg · 05/07/2019 11:20

Blanche is the wrong colour for a non white dog.

A friend of ours has 2 Dobermans called Simon and Mary
congratulations op they are lovely dogs
Don't forget photos!

Honeyroar · 05/07/2019 11:58

I’d say Bianca is just as well known as Blanche for meaning white.

Honeyroar · 05/07/2019 12:00

Mavis goes really well with Derek!

How about Noire or Nero - means black..

SweatyYFronts · 05/07/2019 12:08

Ooo Mary is nice too! I’m going soon to put my deposit down so I’ll take a pic and post it ☺️ I’m so excited! My baby girl x

Acorah would be a fun name.

Then in the park you can call Derek Acorah!

rickandmorts · 05/07/2019 12:25

Our new pup that we got 2 weeks ago is called Lillian Smile. Lil or Lilly for short. She was almost a Maud.

Soomanybooks · 05/07/2019 13:53

My parents always had my Doberman bitches, and my father's German, they were called Dana, Mara and Asta.

Oblomov19 · 05/07/2019 13:57

Love it!!

SweatyYFronts · 05/07/2019 15:04

Here she is! Little Mavis! 5 weeks old. I’m so in love right now
