The core hours are tricky one though, aren’t they because that’s only what people ‘see’ you working. I would say my core hours are actually
7.30-5.30
So...
7.30-8.45-: That gives me an hour and a quarter before the children walk in to set up resources-photocopy, sort tables, find and set out equipment etc
3.30-5.30-: at least 15 minutes waiting with kids whose parents haven’t shown up, quick tidy the tables and a wee (4pm), marking (usually one set of 30 literacy books, one set of 30 maths books and 30x a pm topic piece). Allow for 1 minute per piece (which would probably put you at risk of capability for not being thorough enough!), that’s an hour and a half taking me to 5.30.
I would say those were my core hours. I wouldn’t be able to do my job if I don’t spend the time doing those things every day. I would expect my SLT and the parents of my class to be rightly cross if I didn’t do these things-they are expected and form the core part of my job.
Then, staff meetings, phase meetings, parents evenings, doing displays, assessments and data entry-which I would also argue are core activities.
‘Extras’ would be properly planning (I wish that could be actually completed during PPA!) sourcing activities and resources, SEN paperwork, prepping for trips/festivals/assemblies/concerts/curriculum days and the myriad other things that happen in schools.
It’s like looking at an actor and saying-‘he’s only on Eastenders for 3 x 30 minutes a week. That’s just the performance-there is so much more going on behind the scenes that absolutely has to be done.
For what it’s worth, I’m not moaning but this is what happens. People say things like this
however teachers...have shorter "core" working hours. (Fact) That's the part that makes people have less sympathy for them - rightly or wrongly!
I object, that those are NOT my core hours, and...I’m accused of moaning.
