Not to have realised until now that Joey Maynard’s ‘displaced organ’ was a prolapse?

I know there is or was an enormous Chalet School thread but I can’t spend six weeks trawling through that.

Fascinated to note (because I’ve been reading the complete synopses how all the CS women taken seriously ill either went straight to the San or journeyed - over days - for a consultation with Sir James Talbot. It was he who diagnosed said ‘displaced organ’. At which point Joey had iirc nine children. May be wrong, lost count.

(I read and reread the entire series over my first three decades.)

I’m happy to be the owner of a Dropbox for the books. Once they are in the ‘Box’ for anyone to have access I would just need them to pm me their email address so that they are added to the account.

I use Dropbox for work and like it as it’s easy to add items and to give access to particular people.

Does this mean that I do not need to know what a Drop Box is?

Huzzah.

Have just started The School at the Chalet and am amazed that Madge decided to bugger off to the Tiern See and start a school with only three pupils.

She comes across as utterly deranged.

Jins · 10/07/2019 16:49

I downloaded them all when I had access last week. Smile

So I’m happy to upload them again if a home is found for them

BertrandRussell · 10/07/2019 18:00

“She comes across as utterly deranged“

You ain’t seen nothing yet!

HeroicAlien · 10/07/2019 18:10

I've been sucked in and bought Chalet Girls Grow Up. Even though this was meant to be a year of not buying books, I felt this was an acceptable exception. And perfect timing - I've nearly finished re-reading the whole series (just started Prefects) so if it arrives tomorrow, I can just carry straight on!

I feel I may have gone down a dangerous route though - turns out there are a LOT of Chalet School books not written by EBD.

LaurieMarlow · 10/07/2019 18:12

It does seem totally nuts now. She was 24 and appeared to have no qualifications or much in the way of capital or contacts. Grin

But I loved that spirited Madge of the early books. It always rankled that she became a little wife to an important man so soon (and handed over the reigns of the series to the much more annoying Jo)

Parker231 · 10/07/2019 18:23

How does this sound. I’ve set up a Dropbox account and a new email account - [email protected]

If the transcripts can be emailed there and people pm their email address I can give you access to the Dropbox where all the transcripts will be saved. You can then copy them to your own computer.

BertrandRussell · 10/07/2019 18:26

I think there were far more little private schools in those days, so it may not have seemed quite such a mad idea.

Jemima232 · 10/07/2019 18:37

Bertrand I'm sure you're right - I've read quite a few of the later books and it's interesting to find out how the enterprise started.

Fat-shaming a woman in a café. Telling her she'd started the war (because she came from Berlin) and whenever anyone random wanders past the CS they always have a bunch of daughters or nieces who are immediately enrolled as pupils.

Hmmmm. Looks like Madge was right after all.

Still deranged though IMHO. Not for starting the school - just for her worldview.

BertrandRussell · 10/07/2019 18:39

@Parker231 you are a hero! I’ll pm you my address for when you’ve got a moment. No rush!

Cathymorganforeman · 10/07/2019 18:47

@Parker231 you are a marvel! May your cubicle curtains be forever floral. Will pm email...

Parker231 · 10/07/2019 18:51

Happy to make sure everyone gets their Chalet School fix. Could whoever has a copy of the transcripts email them to [email protected] so I can transfer them to the Dropbox and start giving access to those who have pm’d me their email.

Papergirl1968 · 10/07/2019 18:52

Thank you, Parker. I’ll PM my email address. And I’ll try not to screw the Dropbox up!

LaurieMarlow · 10/07/2019 18:53

Omg, thank you Parker, pming you now.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 10/07/2019 18:57

@parker231 you are a true chalet girl! This could be dangerous for my procrastination but I will pm you

Parker231 · 10/07/2019 19:26

@Jemima232 or @Jins

I think you both had the transcripts? If so please would you email them to [email protected] so I can transfer them to Dropbox. Thank you

Jins · 10/07/2019 19:37

Incoming email @Parker231

Jins · 10/07/2019 19:48

I think they've all sent. If any are missing then let me know. There may be multiple copies of the same book as I'm part way through converting them for the kindle

Apileofballyhoo · 10/07/2019 20:36

I have a feast of reading ahead. On my third Lord Peter now. I'll PM you my email address Parker. No rush, and with many thanks. Also many thanks to Jins.

(There are quite a few I haven't even read so I'm very excited.)

Parker231 · 10/07/2019 21:25

Big thank you to @Jins for emailing me all the books. We’re in for a big treat!

I’ve everything now set up in the Dropbox so those who have pm’d me your email will shortly receive an email giving you access. If anyone has any problems accessing the books please let me know.

Papergirl1968 · 10/07/2019 21:36

Silly question but we do have to download them or can we read them on there, so to speak? My iPad has broken so I’m using my phone...

deeplybaffled · 10/07/2019 22:20

@Parker231 - just sent you a pm. Thank you so much in advance! < ridiculously overexcited hereGrin >

HeroicAlien · 10/07/2019 23:55

I've finished Prefects. My work here is officially done.

But having re-read it, how creepy is the whole Reg/Len thing? Obviously she has to marry a doctor from the San, that's what every good Chalet girl does. But he's allegedly had his eye on her for years, which all sounds a bit suspicious if you ask me.

To all of you about to re-read, enjoy!
I think I judge EBD more and more each time I read the series, but then I remember reading them as a child who would have loved to go to the Chalet School, and I can forgive her.

Now to decide between Kingscote and Trebizon for my next trick....

Papergirl1968 · 11/07/2019 00:15

I think jack had his eye on Joey when she was still at school, too, Heroic.
If I remember rightly, there’s a reference to him having realised what she meant to him, some time before that ridiculous “what a solid lump of comfort you are” scene in Exile.
I can tantalisingly see a preview of the CS files but because my Dropbox is full and I’m too tight to pay £9.99 a month to expand it, I’ve had to set up a new email address and hope that once Parker adds it, I can get access that way.
So excited because i hope I’ll be able to get to a few books that were in the wrong format on the one drive!
