to be a little perturbed to have discovered that my next door neighbour is a Creationist?

Greensleeves · 25/06/2019 22:59

DH overheard our next door neighbour having a row with his wife in the back garden yesterday. He was insisting - belligerently - that the Earth is 6000 years old, Stephen Hawking was an idiot and the moon landing was faked. His wife was cackling and saying things like "but it's basic GCSE physics!".

For the avoidance of dripfeed: he's a dour, ill-mannered git who bellows at his kids all weekend and lets his dog shit on our drive.

“So sick of atheists shitting on everyone.“

Did someone really say this? In all seriousness?

Moralitym1n1 · 29/06/2019 23:30

Anyway, all the talk about creationists made me think about flat earthers and the quote from one if their websites that became famous on SM;

"Flat earthers can be found all over the globe".

Says it all really.

Moralitym1n1 · 29/06/2019 23:36

but Seth was a TW and therefore was responsible for birthing the next generation*

Do you mean a TM?

Because TW dont have wombs; which is one of the reasons they apparently detest actual women (and are focusing on womb transplants).

Herbalteahippie · 29/06/2019 23:39

YANBU why the flip is anyone a creationist in this day and age?!!!
Sounds frustrating about the dog poop on your drive I would be ill. Sorry for your situation x

Lifecraft · 30/06/2019 08:39

So sick of atheists shitting on everyone.

Yes, those pesky atheists, flying planes into skyscrapers, driving vans at people on bridges across the Thames, persecuting homosexuals, rolling back women's rights in the USA, cutting bits off their children, and murdering those who disagree with them.

It would be good if we could do a worldwide count up for the coming month of July, how many religious people in the world will be killed by someone from a different religion, compared to how many will be killed by atheists?

People are murdering each other over who has the right imaginary friend, but people without an imaginary friend aren't harming anyone.

"ooooo.....but they used words to disrespect my god.....it's not fair....boo hoo"

Pinkyyy · 30/06/2019 09:31

Yes, those pesky atheists, flying planes into skyscrapers

What a disgusting comment to make. You should be ashamed of yourself. There are over a billion Muslims in the world, one group decided to do that and you're condemning all religion? So sick.

Deliheaven · 30/06/2019 09:34

Agree. Lifecraft, it’s not fair to use terrorist extremists as an example of why religion is bad.

araiwa · 30/06/2019 09:51

Why not?

When people do bad things because of their religion, why shouldnt it be blamed?

Pinkyyy · 30/06/2019 09:56

Because terrorists are sick and extreme individuals. They don't account for the rest of the normal people in the world who follow religion and don't do things like that.

If an atheist was a serial killer, could I say that they were a representation of all atheists? Of court not.

Pinkyyy · 30/06/2019 09:56

Of course not*

araiwa · 30/06/2019 09:56

"With or without religion, good people can behave well and bad people can do evil; but for good people to do evil - that takes religion."

Steven Weinberg

araiwa · 30/06/2019 09:59

But an aethiest serial killer doesnt kill people because of their (non) religion.

But people abuse women outside womens health clinics because of their religion

Theres a massive difference

SagAloojah · 30/06/2019 10:29

Araiwa, no they don’t, religion is the excuse. There are plenty of atheist misogynists/abusers too.

araiwa · 30/06/2019 10:47

There are atheist racists, murderers, homophobes etc etc

But not because they are atheist. Because they are racist etc etc

Atheism doesnt have a view on anything beyond no god. So you cant be homophobic because of atheism but you can because the bible/ koran/ torah says that you should be as its a sin

BertrandRussell · 30/06/2019 10:51

“Araiwa, no they don’t, religion is the excuse. There are plenty of atheist misogynists/abusers too.”
No. Their religion is why they do it.

Of course there abusive, misogynist, unpleasant atheists. Atheism says nothing about a person except that they do not believe in a god or gods. Nothing else at all. Noting about their morals, their philosophy or their way of life.

Deliheaven · 30/06/2019 11:11

Maybe their religion is why they do it but I still don’t think that’s the fault of religion. It’s individuals or groups getting carried away, being radicalised, doing something they say is for their religion but the religion dictates the opposite behaviour in all circumstances.

BertrandRussell · 30/06/2019 11:21

Right. I could come up with a whole range of quotations from the Bible which the anti abortion people outside clinics could, with perfect validity, use to justify their actions. (And before anyone says why are you only attacking Christians- i’m not. I’m absolutely sure there is equal Qu’ranic justification for terrorism too- I just don’t know the Qu’aan well enough to cite it.)

floraloctopus · 30/06/2019 11:25

If he's a creationist who is forcing his views on you then ask him why he had to have sex to have children, why didn't they just appear as if by magic?

If he's not imposing his views on you then leave him alone.

IndieTara · 30/06/2019 13:13

OP i married now XH then found out he believed the holocaust didn't happen and the moon landings were fake

Icantreachthepretzels · 30/06/2019 13:59

Maybe their religion is why they do it but I still don’t think that’s the fault of religion.

How can it not be the fault of religion when they are getting their views from the very text that is the foundation of that religion? Confused

aliceinwonderlandbrum · 30/06/2019 14:47

Couldn't agree more

aliceinwonderlandbrum · 30/06/2019 14:49

Sorry pressed post too soon.
I couldn't agree more Pretzels

People are murdering each other over who has the right imaginary friend, but people without an imaginary friend aren't harming anyone.

Have you studied the events of the twentieth century recently? Have you seen what happens to dissenters in N Korea? Do you know what is being done to people who don't toe the line in China? All from systems of government processing no 'imaginary friend'.

Lifecraft · 30/06/2019 16:54

Have you studied the events of the twentieth century recently? Have you seen what happens to dissenters in N Korea? Do you know what is being done to people who don't toe the line in China? All from systems of government processing no 'imaginary friend'.

Most of the dissenters who suffer in N Korea and China are atheists. They just don't like the government. The N Korean govt may well be crap, but not because it's atheist, but because it's crap. It's not the Atheist Republic of China, in the same way as it's the Islamic republic of Iran, is it?

People seem to not understand, all atheism is, is a lack of belief in gods or god. It says nothing about whether you are good or bad, a murderer or a charity worker. The worlds major religions all have a holy book, a manual for how it's followers should live there lives, and in the case of Islam, Christianity and Judaism, it is full of homophobia, misogyny, sexism and texts about smiting your enemies (that's anyone of a different religion). I suspect most other religions are much the same.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/06/2019 17:09

Dogmatic totalitarian political systems share some of the problems that can go along with religions. They're all man-made social structures, so it's hardly surprising.

But monotheism can add an extra layer of intolerance (can, not necessarily so). The religious tolerance of Rome (different god? Great, the more the merrier!) came unstuck when it met the absolutism of Judaism and Christianity.
