some eejit yelled at me, after he let me cross,
Could have said thank you.
i'm shy
I dont necessary thank drivers,
its in the highway code surely?

It's got absolutely nothing to do with the Highway Code, it's common decency.

If you're allowed to cross then you do a little wave, a smile and make it obvious that you're doing a little run to get across quicker!

1CantPickAName · 25/06/2019 21:04

I always acknowledge and say thank you, if my kids are with me I make them say thank you too.

I get annoyed when people don’t say thank you when I’m the drivet

Racheyg · 25/06/2019 21:07

Yes I do, even my dcs who are 4 and 5 do. I also thank drivers for giving way when I'm driving.

origamiunicorn · 25/06/2019 21:07

Yes I do it's just common courtesy. Surely you say thanks if someone holds a door open for you? It's the same thing.

CornerofUpandDown · 25/06/2019 21:10

I always wave and say thank you. Same as when I'm in the car.

Kindness costs nothing.

WiltedDaffs · 25/06/2019 21:12

I don’t recall anyone ever thanking me at a zebra, nor do I expect them to. I’m just following rules, I don’t expect my boss to thank me for following our basic workplace rules. I do so because it’s just what I’m supposed to do if I want to work there. I’m able to drive my car by holding a revokable licence, following the rules is what I’m supposed to do if I want to keep it. I definitely do not expect people to speed up and hurry across. It’s their road as well.

That said, I do put my hand up as a thanks to drivers at zebras... if they anticipated I’d be crossing and stopped ahead of time. If they slam on the brakes because they weren’t paying attention or worse, try to beat me to the crossing so they don’t have to stop, then I don’t want to bother.

A few weeks ago, I did have someone shout as I crossed, demanding a thank you. I actually would have thanked him if I wasn’t distracted by the two previous drivers speeding through it and ignoring me. He shouted as I was halfway across and well, you definitely don’t get one then. Calling out your window as you sit in your metal box is intimidating (it actually makes me want to give you a completely different sort of hand gesture which, whilst I don’t do it, I’m sure it’s not the desired effect you were hoping for).

TheSultanofPingu · 25/06/2019 21:17

Why the hell should someone do a little run to make it obvious that they're trying to cross the road more quickly Sherlock?
And allowed to cross the road!
Are you for real?

EleanorReally · 25/06/2019 21:18

I dont think running across a zebra is a good plan, nor a necessary way of crossing.

OP posts:
EleanorReally · 25/06/2019 21:19

anyway, I shall now make sure I smile and wave, or at least Wave if a smile is unforthcoming.

OP posts:
Dec2019mumtobe · 25/06/2019 21:23

I always do, yes. I just stick my hand up and say thanks in the general direction of the car.

daisypond · 25/06/2019 21:24

What do you mean by a crossing? A zebra crossing or a green man crossing? I would never thank a driver for stopping. They have to stop once you’re on the crossing. That’s the law. For a green man crossing the driver’s traffic light will show red. They’re not doing me a favour or being courteous. I would only wave a thanks if I was slow on the crossing - I sometimes need a stick to walk with,

JanesKettle · 25/06/2019 21:31

Always!

A hand raised in acknowledgement, and a verbal thank you - even if the driver can't hear me, they can see by my body language that I'm obviously saying thanks!

Considerate drivers are the kind of people you want say thank you to!

JanesKettle · 25/06/2019 21:32

I don't run though. I mean, I don't dawdle, but I am allowed to cross the road as a pedestrian :)

Meyoumeanmeh · 25/06/2019 21:35

as a driver i dont notice if pedestrians wave thanks, i believe they dont
They do, lots of us have said so! It’s just common courtesy.
As a driver I always notice if people are appreciative or just saunter across all entitled (and slow as if to prove their entitlement)
You have already said
as a driver i dont expect any thanks tbh
But as you don’t ever give any -of course you don’t. I’m guessing you also walk slowly.

AbGonk · 25/06/2019 21:35

Oh you lot! Saying you always smile and wave because you're so nice and polite and then getting arsey with OP when she says she feels too shy to wave.

ChevalierTialys · 25/06/2019 21:36

I do. Taught the kids to as well. Its manners.

ChevalierTialys · 25/06/2019 21:36

I would never shout at someone if they didn't though. That's a bit pathetic.

GymKitJen · 25/06/2019 21:49

Not if I have right of way and I wouldn't expect a pedestrian to thank me when I'm driving either

TheSultanofPingu · 25/06/2019 21:54

Those pesky pedestrians, sauntering across the road, all entitled!

Coan · 25/06/2019 21:58

I don't wave when crossing a zebra crossing, I just cross same as at a red light, when the cars stop I walk across, normal speed.

IAmNotAWitch · 25/06/2019 21:59

This stuff is "social grease", just makes everyones day a little smoother.

He should not have shouted, what a dickhead.

Lifeover · 25/06/2019 22:14

Just raise your hand

TriciaH87 · 25/06/2019 22:31

If I'm driving I put my hand up to thank a car for stopping if I'm on foot I put my hand up to thank a car for stopping. It's polite to show your greatful. They could be in a hurry but took the time to let you go. Especially if it's raining remember to thank them because they are going to cross several people wanting to cross roads and the nice ones will stop for them all in bad weather to help them get out of the rain that little bit sooner.

patchisagoodpup · 25/06/2019 22:41

Yeah I always gesture a thank you either by a hand wave or mouthing thank you with a smile if my hands are taken up by kids and their gear. If I don't receive a thank you, as a driver, I do a pass agg THANKS SHITHEAD or similar but not usually so they'd hear Wink

HiJenny35 · 25/06/2019 22:46

Always, basic manners and so do my children.
