I always give a thumbs up to anyone who shows courtesy on the road whether I or they are driving or walking. It's basic manners

I was taught to put my hand up as a child. It's only for a second and I would feel rude if I didn't.

Grumpbum123 · 25/06/2019 18:35

Always even if it’s a quick head turn smile and nod

PouncerDarling · 25/06/2019 18:35

I didn't until I started driving and now I do the hand wave automatically even though I'm not in a car.

Before I drove, I used to just try and make eye contact with the driver.

Meyoumeanmeh · 25/06/2019 18:36

I always wave a thanks and often mouth “thank you” in their general direction too.
It’s nice to be nice.

HeartStrings · 25/06/2019 18:36

I do, I wave back to say your welcome to the ones who thank me too

QueenoftheBiscuitTin · 25/06/2019 18:36

Assuming this is a zebra crossing?

Yes I always acknowledge the driver,if they have stopped at a crossing for me,really rude not to.

I don’t thank people at pedestrian lights though.

DontCallMeBaby · 25/06/2019 18:37

On a zebra crossing, where they’re obliged to stop once I have a foot on the crossing? No way, and I wouldn’t expect it as a driver (in fact I’d find it mildly irritating, but that’s just me). If they’ve chosen to stop, yes, nice to thank them. In fact in that scenario there’s probably been a little gesture from the driver to say ‘do cross’, so responding seems like an obvious thing to do.

insancerre · 25/06/2019 18:38

No
I dont thank drivers for following the law

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 25/06/2019 18:39

Shy is no excuse to be ungrateful.

I would have done a passive aggressive "YOURE WELCOME!" As well

EleanorReally · 25/06/2019 18:39

it is muggy and uncomfortable here

OP posts:
Sux2buthen · 25/06/2019 18:39

Sometimes but not often
"Thanks for managing to obey the law and not killing me"
I don't get thanks for not diving in front of cars when I shouldn't (which is always I supposeGrin)

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 25/06/2019 18:41

It massively depends whether it was a zebra crossing or just a random part of the road tbh

I don't expect thanks if it was a zebra crossing.

ToasterCrumbs · 25/06/2019 18:42

If a car stops on a normal road to let me cross, 100% of the time I will smile, raise my hand and say thank you.

If a car stops on a zebra crossing to let me cross, probably 70% of the time I raise my hand to say thank you.

I have no idea why I thank some drivers on zebra crossings but not others. It's this weird instinct whether I like them or not.

SoupDragon · 25/06/2019 18:42

Yes, it's basic manners. Being shy is no excuse for not just raising a hand in thanks.

Teachermaths · 25/06/2019 18:42

Yes, or a smile if I've got both hands attached to children!

Pinkmouse6 · 25/06/2019 18:42

I do, I’m usually incredibly grateful when drivers stop because most are selfish and don’t bother. I always make a point of stopping for pedestrians as often as I can because I know how it feels to be stood waiting to cross forever, especially in bad weather.

Ikabod · 25/06/2019 18:43

Yes at zebra crossings, no at light controlled crossing.

notacooldad · 25/06/2019 18:43

On a zebra crossing, where they’re obliged to stop once I have a foot on the crossing?
Do not go to Macedonia, Albania or the Ukraine. Even if you are half way through crossing no one stops, not car owners, bin men, police , anyone!!! I found my self saying thank you for not killing me!!!🤣🤣

RavenousBabyButterfly · 25/06/2019 18:44

I seem to have developed the habit of raising a hand in thanks but I'm not sure why you should. I mean you don't thank people for not pulling out of a side road in front of you or for correctly giving way at a roundabout. I certainly would never berate someone for not saying thanks. I think that's much ruder than not saying thanks.

Hugsandpastries · 25/06/2019 18:44

If not at an official crossing I give a little thank you wave but secretly most of the time would rather drivers didn’t stop in this way, it makes me feel pressured to cross quickly when often traffic hasn’t stopped coming on the other side. Sometimes I am not completely sure if they are stopping for me either, drivers forget that the reflections on the window can mean you can’t see their faces. He was out of order to shout at you.

GroggyLegs · 25/06/2019 18:44

While no, you don't have to thank people for not running you over, it's both a friendly gesture and good manners to acknowledge that someone's stopped for you.
