Rich people = same car

To wonder why all the loaded people at my kids’ school drive the same car - Range Rover/ Land Rover? Surely there are more choices to spend money on?? They are like sheep!

Maybe they are all lazy and live closest to a Land Rover dealer

AlaskanOilBaron · 25/06/2019 19:43

Nothing screams “I am lower middle class and learned everything I know about the aristocracy from Jilly Cooper and MN threads like these” than the fucking baffling and ludicrous insistence that rich/posh/rich&posh people all drive ancient bangers.

Lolz.

PantsyMcPantsface · 25/06/2019 19:44

It's the massive Audi, Merc and BMW 4x4s that never go further off road than Tesco car park around here. Think there's one Tesla I see regularly and one Maserati - but the German 4x4 behemoths with private number plates are absolutely everywhere on the school run. It's an expensive part of town but by no means ridiculously expensive.

bebeboeuf · 25/06/2019 19:47

LOlz indeed - from someone who grew up with very wealthy parents who drove clapped out old bangers until they were astronaut miles and no longer functioning

Better off spending ÂŁ1000 every month to fix a dearly beloved than put ÂŁ100k down on something that will depreciate by more than that per month?

(The view of my parents, not necessarily mine)

katseyes7 · 25/06/2019 19:52

My OH has a Range Rover, but he (and both the boys) do a lot of gigs and they can get the gear in the back.
Also, when he had the Giant rabbit, her crate fitted in the boot....

lalafafa · 25/06/2019 19:52

RR Are easy to park because of the sensors and cameras. I can park in a spot with an inch or 2 spare back and front.

Coolcoolcoolcoolcool · 25/06/2019 19:53

Its the high school equivalent of carrying round your pe kit in a Jane Norman carrier bag. - my sister did this! For a while it was a harrods bag too, but someone must've taken the piss out of it cause it was back to jane norman pretty quickly. Wow, I had completely forgotten about that.

tilder · 25/06/2019 19:54

People can get very defensive about their car choice...

People buy cars for lots of reasons. But some will have image and/or status as part of that choice. It says something about you and your values, including how much cash you are willing to spend.

Re car finance. I get the appeal of 0% but it's a very expensive way of buying a car. Or renting one if you change when the term is up.

Lovemusic33 · 25/06/2019 19:54

It’s the same here, they seem to think they can park wherever they like, mount pavements and verges because they have a Range Rover.

I wouldn’t want one but then I don’t like to follow the crowd. My drive is unique 🤣

opinionatedfreak · 25/06/2019 19:54

The most financially comfortable people I know drive a 12yo Honda Civic (not even a Type R) and a 5yo Octavia estate.

Flash cars not really a thing in my social circle.

Family 1 may we'll get a tesla next though due to ULEZ in London.

Sunndowne · 25/06/2019 19:58

Haven't read whole thread but I find it interesting as I've kept to myself for years how vulgar I find RR. I'm sure they are fine cars but are they too big and dangerous for our local roads.
A few years back a mum mounted a pavement on school run trying to park and a parent was killed. Aren't they really difficult to park? Is visibility good in them at school gates. I did actually see years back a newsreel for a petition for such issues.

Know I'll hear shouts of don't be stupid! But honestly, I'm not good enough at parking to navigate such a huge car near crowds.Blush

nokidshere · 25/06/2019 20:03

Why does anyone care what someone else drives? If it has 4 wheels and gets me where I am going in comfort I'm happy. I don't care what my next door neighbour drives (although weirdly we both have ford Kugas)

Carrotcakeforbreakfast · 25/06/2019 20:06

I would have one and might for my next car
I need a 4x4 for my job and they are lovely

I don't get the keeping up with the Jones's argument. People I know who are extremely wealthy drive an old Volvo or an old Jaguar.

saywhatwhatnow · 25/06/2019 20:06

Richest person I know drives a 2009 golf. They are pretty damn wealthy.

SausageSimon · 25/06/2019 20:07

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz best comment, it was top shop bags for me Grin

Waxlyrically · 25/06/2019 20:08

I don’t begrudge people having expensive cars and I’m not jealous in any shape or form - perfectly happy with the standard sized car I have chosen for myself. However, I cant help but judge people for picking such environmentally unfriendly cars. All cars are bad enough for the environment, (including mine), but how necessary is it for most UK lifestyles to have such large energy inefficient vehicles?

The visibility blocking height and dazzling headlights, (due to the height they are set at), are also a problem for other road users but even those things seem less antisocial than the complete environmental disregard.

bigbeans · 25/06/2019 20:10

I love seeing every other poster popping up to say

"The richest person I know drives a "

FFS we get it! Some rich people have old bangers.

Some others have beautiful cars worth six figures 🤷🏼‍♀️

ooooohbetty · 25/06/2019 20:13

Because they are now ten a penny, the people who think driving an expensive car will make people think they are rich, are now driving around in rented Bentleys. I saw 3 in our local shopping centre the other week. I also saw a couple of rolls Royce's in town the other week driven by very young flashy types. I don't know who they think they're fooling.

Mitzicoco · 25/06/2019 20:16

I don't really understand why anyone gives a shit what car other people drive. At my dc's school, there are loads of rangerovers, or landrovers or whatever you call them. There are also a lot of very rich people who drive them. I don't thin that they are trying to keep up with anyone!

Mitzicoco · 25/06/2019 20:16

*think

Coffeeisnecessary · 25/06/2019 20:17

I don't understand everyone saying they are roomy- we had one as a courtesy car after my yeti got crashed into and it was tiny inside! It was an evoke and looked massive (and horrible in my view) on the outside but felt oppressive inside with hardly any legroom! Was glad to get my old banger back!!

Geraniumpink · 25/06/2019 20:18

White range rovers or discovery with personalised number plate, cream minis or a jaguar are the cars of choice amongst the wealthier areas round us. It’s just the fashion I suppose and people are entitled to indulge if they have the money.

londonrach · 25/06/2019 20:21

Its not weathy people who drive these cars!! I not say anything else

Tara336 · 25/06/2019 20:22

What is this with all the car snobbery? Does it matter what anyone drives really? People choose cars for all sorts of reasons, lifestyle, budget, comfort etc it seems to be people make an assumption about you based on your car of choice if it happens to be a luxury car your instantly judged! You never see a thread or assumptions made about people driving a Ford or Vauxhall (no I don’t own or want a Range Rover)

DramaRamaLlama · 25/06/2019 20:23

Of course some of them are wealthy. Just not the sort of wealthy that MNers approve of Hmm
