Rich people = same car

To wonder why all the loaded people at my kids’ school drive the same car - Range Rover/ Land Rover? Surely there are more choices to spend money on?? They are like sheep!

Aha yes!! The French bulldog is the accessory of choice for RR drivers 😆 can tick that box for my exh too...he has two (of course)

EarlGreyOfTwinings · 25/06/2019 19:07

SushiTime
who's getting worked up?
As I said earlier, as long as you don't keep your main beams and don't block the road, I don't really care. I am just amused. Why do you need to translate that as anger?

I would still prefer to be stuck in a pink RR right now than in my train Grin

Ringdonna · 25/06/2019 19:08

My yummy mummy group all drive such vehicles.

TheDarkPassenger · 25/06/2019 19:10

I can’t honestly believe people actually care what cars other people have!

Aragog · 25/06/2019 19:11

It’s not inverse snobbery

Oh but it is - for many many people on this thread alone it really is just plain simple inverse snobbery. Read the comments. It's there in bucketloads!

You can always tell the "old money" types, they're the ones in the 18 year old Volvo, Merc or Landy

Definitely not always true, at all! IME on some seriously 'old' money weather - cast array of cars used, including top of the range white shiny RR I'm afraid.

georgie262 · 25/06/2019 19:11

I also find it funny how people are saying RR owner aren't 'truly rich' or else they'd be driving round in cheap bangers but there was a thread here a few weeks ago claiming people earning £100k/year was rich. The 100kers are probably those same RR owners. Are they rich or not?

trackingmedown · 25/06/2019 19:11

I think we are quite rich (multiple homes, nice holidays, savings and investments). We share and drive a battered old Prius because neither of us gives a shit about cars. In fact my idea of being rich is being able to call an Uber whenever I want and not care about surges.

sawyersfishbiscuits · 25/06/2019 19:12

Its the high school equivalent of carrying round your pe kit in a Jane Norman carrier bag.

GrinGrinGrin

You clearly went to my secondary school!

Papergirl1968 · 25/06/2019 19:15

We have quite a nasty right turn out of our estate on to a busy main road and I have noticed that Range Rover drivers never let me out. I often find myself muttering “arrogant bastard” or similar.

DramaRamaLlama · 25/06/2019 19:16

I love the MN narrative that all the really rich people drive clapped out bangers Hmm

In my world the really rich all drive top of the range Aston's/porches/maseratis and Tesla's.

Kaddm · 25/06/2019 19:18

I guess if your friend has one and you like it, you might buy one yourself. Apparently the interior is amazing though. My ds’s friend’s mum has one and and now ds thinks my car is shit!

BackBoiler · 25/06/2019 19:18

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz Grin

sqirrelfriends · 25/06/2019 19:18

Are you sure they're rich OP? In my street (just an ordinary estate) there are loads of them along with massive Audi's and Mercedes. I'm assuming my neighbours aren't rich or they would live somewhere better.

LittleGinBigGin · 25/06/2019 19:20

Dh and I went and had a look (from the outside) of a cottage we have put an offer on today (mainly to see if it floods)

It’s in a small village and absolutely lovely.

Every other car was a Range Rover Grin and all other cars were volvo’s

I’ve told dh he needs to buy me one now so I fit in Grin

never going to fit in with our old battered car

Aworldofmyown · 25/06/2019 19:20

I drive a Range Rover. Its also a white Range Rover!!! I love it and am not going to justify all the reasons why we chose it (there are reasons)

I'm also a very considerate driver just saying

JazzersMaw · 25/06/2019 19:22

They might live up a muddy track and need 4-wheel drive?

GibbonLover · 25/06/2019 19:25

I bloody well LOVE my Ford Focus. It's 17 years old and passed its MOT this morning. And you know what? If anyone is looking at me thinking 'Urrgh, look at that crappy old Focus', I couldn't give a rat's ass - it's them with the problem, not me. I'd rather spend my money on holidays. Horses for courses and all that.

AlaskanOilBaron · 25/06/2019 19:26

It's definitely not true that rich people all drive old beaters, this is one of the most enduring MN myths.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 25/06/2019 19:30

Range Rovers in London are a nightmare to park.

I drive a Tesla, I don’t care about cars but am an early adopter of electric vehicles Smile

SoloD · 25/06/2019 19:33

"They are high up roomy cars with good safety features for kids,"

Really, if safety is the primary concern there are safer cars. The high center of gravity would make it much less safe at speed.

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 25/06/2019 19:38

Nothing screams “I am lower middle class and learned everything I know about the aristocracy from Jilly Cooper and MN threads like these” than the fucking baffling and ludicrous insistence that rich/posh/rich&posh people all drive ancient bangers.

Seriously. No.

As someone else said, some may own one or two ancient bangers among many others and keep it at one house (for a nanny/housekeeper/dogs/teenager usually).

And no, absolutely no one got rich because they avoided spending money on cars. That is not how the rich/posh got rich/stay rich. At all. That is how middle class people prioritise holidays or house equity.

fitterhappierhealthier · 25/06/2019 19:40

Wow I'm new to MN and this thread makes me want to leave already. What a load of judgemental people there are! I hope no one ever judges me by what car I drive be it a Range Rover or a 20 year old Volvo Hmm

Aragog · 25/06/2019 19:40

Really, if safety is the primary concern there are safer cars.

To be fair, a Land Rover Discovery and a Range Rover both get a 5/5 star NCAP rating, so its not as if they are unsafe in any way.

Alarae · 25/06/2019 19:41

The richest person I know (hundreds of millions) has happily stated his favourite car is his Fiat 500.

Does not put me in the same echelon as him just because I drive one too!

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 25/06/2019 19:43

I'm sure plenty of the wealthy don't drive elderly vehicles, but the proper money in these parts (the sort with acreage) usually gets itself about in middle-aged muddy Volvos, or 4x4 pick-ups or LRs bought new but now being run into the ground.
