Rich people = same car

To wonder why all the loaded people at my kids’ school drive the same car - Range Rover/ Land Rover? Surely there are more choices to spend money on?? They are like sheep!

I would say the rich persons car of choice is the Bentley 4x4 thing, that is ugly.

Nah, Rolls Royce Cullinan - that really is a fugly car (and a snip at £260k).

Shockers · 01/07/2019 14:22

It’s funny how it’s all the non RR owners who seem to know the most about them...

AndSheWas85 · 01/07/2019 14:53

Thing is though, there is no prestige in owing one.
Does anyone seriously think that?
A lot of people can get them on a lease deal/PCP, nothing wrong with that if that's makes sense to you financially
But the newer models are notoriously bad for reliability.

I say this as someone who has owned one.
A gas guzzling junker of a thing that a good few years later (and lots of repairs during that time) I was happy to sell on to nearest scrap yard.

YesQueen · 01/07/2019 14:56

@Shockers I only know because I work for the brand! Well, jaguar and Land Rover so I speak to 100+ LR owners every day

TulipsTulipsTulips · 01/07/2019 15:03

This thread is hilarious! We are a one car family and our one car is a LR discovery. It's certainly not a status thing. I really love the vehicle, split tailgate is fantastic for picnics, car is amazing for countryside, car is really comfortable, I can actually SEE with my side mirrors (where blind spots tend to be a big problem for me), we have loads of room and it's great for trips with the wider family as we have the 7 seats. Honestly it is about the perfect car for our needs and I'm constantly saying I never want to change it. How cringeworthy that people out there (and on mumsnet) would judge us for this choice of vehicle!

TulipsTulipsTulips · 01/07/2019 15:04

also we didn't buy it on finance, we own it outright. Why do posters assume they're purchased on finance? Another weird assumption.

BubblesBuddy · 01/07/2019 15:08

We have 5 cars. RR Discovery, Merc SL, plus two Porches and a Mini hybrid. Do you know what? I don’t give a Flying V about what anyone else thinks. We own them and love them!

DC90 · 01/07/2019 15:12

Ironically the richest person I know drives a classic car it's some sort of a 1960 muscle car. He is quite quirky though and is putting a lot of money in to it though. I'm not a huge car person (drive a 2016 citeron C3 I got on finance) but everyone round here with a bit of money seems to be obsessed with Audis.

BubblesBuddy · 01/07/2019 15:19

Except that 80% of new cars sold in the UK are not owned by their drivers. They are company cars or on some form of lease deal. Audi’s are not particularly expensive on lease deals. They are not comparable with a new Range Rovers in terms of build quality, longevity or luxury. They are, after all, VWs in different clothes.

wonkylegs · 01/07/2019 15:23

@LakieLady funnily enough we've had the opposite experience.
We had an Audi for 8years that wasn't the most reliable car and always seemed to be in the garage and unfortunately until we found a reliable alternative to the main dealer who were awful it was painful and expensive, the thought of dealing with the dealership put me off ever buying an Audi again they were so crap.
We have now got a 3yo LR discovery sport and the only repair we've had to pay for was when DH thought he knew better than the parking sensors how close a tree was! We have had one other thing fixed but that was under warranty and they came to the house to do it one evening so it really was no hassle at all. I know they have a reputation for being unreliable so I guess we've been pretty lucky.

BubblesBuddy · 01/07/2019 15:28

Why is it men ignore parking sensors? My DH did exactly the same thing a few years ago. Is it arrogance?

AndSheWas85 · 01/07/2019 16:43

@BubblesBuddy
I don't know
but a lot of men I know, seem to do the casual reverse parking thing with one hand on the wheel.
While I'm trying to engage the invisible brake Grin

ContinuityError · 01/07/2019 16:58

two Porches

How do you drive a porch?

HeronLanyon · 01/07/2019 17:05

Bubbles as well as the porches Grin is your hybrid a countryman? I thought they were still on pre order ? Got to say not at all find if current minis but I retested I. This one as spec and economy and range
On battery look really
Impressive.

HeronLanyon · 01/07/2019 17:06

That should read ‘but I am interested in this one’. All thumbs here.

KarmaKhameleon · 01/07/2019 17:45

Why are people so sneery about car finance? We just got an Audi - not brand new - on a PCP deal. It works for us as DP gets a generous travel allowance each month as part of his job package, plus we are also putting money aside towards a big extension, so didn't want to deplete our savings. We own a second car outright. Genuinely curious as the dealer told us that today 92% of all cars are bought via some kind of finance arrangement, but reading through this thread it feels like they're very much looked down upon. Why?

fancynancyclancy · 01/07/2019 18:15

I’m not snobby about car finance, in some instances it makes sense. I think for a long time cars have been perceived as a status symbol, but because of car finance it’s less so. Therefore you have lots of people telling you that they bought theirs outright because you know they aren’t poor like people who buy on finance 😒

LimitIsUp · 01/07/2019 23:54

Rubbish Bubblesbuddy - I suggest you read this https://www.whatcar.com/news/new-audi-q7-vs-used-range-rover-sport-which-is-best/n18989

thisismeusernameything · 02/07/2019 00:07

Two Land Rover discoveries here, Audi convertible and 1955 series one Land Rover. To assume any of them are on finance would be hilarious. They are generally covered in horse and cow shit. Such an odd assumption to make otherwise. We have the discos because we need them. Some people do have a use for these things.

Whowouldsaysuchathing · 14/07/2019 13:08

This thread is such a mix of bragging and judging, it’s most peculiar.

Posters who cannot resist shouting about the cost of their cars and that they PAID CASH DON’T YOU KNOW must have no idea that money might talk, but wealth whispers Grin. I imagine they can’t wait to crowbar it into real life conversation too, with a faux casual “of course, we got such a discount for paying cash, oh, poor you, did you have to use finance? Next time old chap!”

Shockers · 14/07/2019 14:49

This thread is actually starting to piss me off. So many assumptions about other people, based purely on their bloody car!

PooWillyBumBum · 14/07/2019 18:20

At DD's (private) school it's the Porsche SUV thing which seems to be the most popular, with RR/LRs a close second (but a lot of people live out in the sticks on chunks of land so probably find use on the hobby farm??). You've got to admit...they are bloody comfortable cars.

The one guy I suspect is the richest of them all (he's pretty high up on The Times rich list) drives a Nissan Leaf and the nanny drives a LR. He has also worn the same scruffy anorak the whole 8 years I've known him.

I know fuck all about cars, so am a happy pleb in my VW. I see lots of those on the road, so I guess that makes me a poor sheep?

sqirrelfriends · 15/07/2019 09:27

@Whowouldsaysuchathing completely agree about the bragging, it seems to be the done thing on Mumsnet. I was taught (perhaps wrongly) that it's ok to have and to talk about the nice car, the exotic holiday, big house etc. But to discuss what they might have cost or earnings is a nono.

On the other hand this is Mumsnet so I guess people have scope to be a bit braggy without annoying any of their real world friends.
