Rich people = same car

To wonder why all the loaded people at my kids’ school drive the same car - Range Rover/ Land Rover? Surely there are more choices to spend money on?? They are like sheep!

Such a stupid thread. As is my car choice. I'm a massive chavvy wannabe, y'all caught me MN.

necks her lambrini through a straw so i don't mess my fillers up

Ifyouknowyouknow · 29/06/2019 10:19

We drive one because I can’t fit my children in a Audi R8. Woe is life

Ihatehashtags · 29/06/2019 10:26

Such an ugly car and they are ridiculously unreliable. Buy a Lexus suv or a Toyota prado anyday

ContinuityError · 29/06/2019 14:48

@Ifyouknowyouknow Sell the RR, sell the children, buy an Audi R8. Problem solved.

Vulpine · 29/06/2019 15:03

Living in the city with 2 cars seems a bit excessive

Shockers · 01/07/2019 09:24

Ihatehashtags ours is over three years old and has not been unreliable in the slightest. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder though (I think most cars are ugly, including ours).

Nanamilly · 01/07/2019 09:28

I have no idea why people buy Range Rovers, they are notoriously shite

Not so.

jennymanara · 01/07/2019 09:36

They did not used to in the past, but they do now have very poor reliability ratings in many online reviews.

fancynancyclancy · 01/07/2019 09:45

They are less popular in SW London these days imo. Volvo 4x4s are the thing to have, much more discerning. Get the safety, space but less towie, footballer associations.

We have an XC90 but I grew up with the classic Volvo estate so always had an affinity with the brand. My mum still has hers!

Nanamilly · 01/07/2019 09:48

We have quite a few in the immediate family. All bought new. My own is a Vogue that’s a couple of years old. None of them have been a moments trouble to the owners. Not even the ones that are used on desert crossing camping trips throughout the year.

I prefer it to the SL Mercedes I previously drove.

I’m not much interested in online reviews. I knew what I wanted, went to the showroom and left 45 minutes later having ordered it.

jennymanara · 01/07/2019 09:52

Fair enough then. I don't care what cars others buy, but I am very interested in online reviews when I buy a car, both reviews from owners and in car magazines. My number one priority when buying our last car was reliability.

fancynancyclancy · 01/07/2019 09:52

I actually don’t think the new RR models are that attractive, always liked the Vogue though.

If I won big on the Lotto I’d go for a Mercedes AMG G wagon though so I can’t really judge.

Shetlandponyranger · 01/07/2019 09:53

I have a Land Rover discovery. It is brilliant- gets 3 car chairs across the back, tows the trailer like a dream, loads of room for saddles and bikes. Lovely to drive.
I spent years driving beat up old cars and can now afford the car I have always wanted so that is what I drive.
It is on finance (shock horror!) but I like the opportunity to upgrade and the customer /service support is absolutely excellent.

I live rurally and have ponies as well as young children. It suits our life style and we enjoy owning the car.
I do let people out at junctions though Grin

jennymanara · 01/07/2019 10:06

What annoys me more than junctions are people driving land rovers who refuse to move over to the hedge on narrow country roads. IME land rover drivers move over into the hedge off road, less than other car drivers which makes absolutely no sense, considering their cars are built more for this. Instead I usually have to pull our Ford Focus over and hope we don't get stuck in a patch of mud. Grrr.

tenbob · 01/07/2019 10:21

@fancynancyclancy
That’s because the Volvo is less than half the price of a proper Range Rover (not the evoque which is too big to be a family car!) and everyone is getting worried about brexit and bonuses...

LakieLady · 01/07/2019 10:24

Do you live in the West Midlands? Loads of people have them round here because they work for Jaguar Landrover. Not at all unusual for two per family.

I have a friend who lives in a village near Solihull. Her husband won't have a RR because "people will think I work for them and got it cheap". He has a BMW 4x4 instead. Grin

Another friend lives near where Katie Price used to live. She won't have a RR either, she says KP has devalued the brand for ever!

Someone we think is jolly loaded, having recently bought a small country estate for £9m, mostly drives an old, beaten up LR Defender, complete with snorkel (the roads near his place flood quite badly). We sometimes see him out in his other car though, which is even older, 1960s.

It's a Mark 1 Aston Martin DB6 Volante - now that's class. It's subtle though, not a huge head-turner. You just think "Lovely old classic sports car" when you see it.

fancynancyclancy · 01/07/2019 10:47

@tenbob I disagree for some perhaps. After all there are other cheaper models. The actual brand is popular.

I think the excellent safety record is a big plus plus I know plenty of people who have one by choice who aren’t really affected by Brexit, no mortgage etc.

fancynancyclancy · 01/07/2019 11:04

That’s because the Volvo is less than half the price of a proper Range Rover (not the evoque which is too big to be a family car!)

It’s the XC90 hybrid model that’s very popular (green credentials) which I believe starts at 65k, Id have to check as I don’t know prices but pretty sure RR’s aren’t 130k

tenbob · 01/07/2019 11:17

The hybrid Range Rover also with good green credentials - and an exemption from the congestion charge - is around £95k for the entry model the so the Volvo is still significantly cheaper

fancynancyclancy · 01/07/2019 11:45

It’s not half the price though is it!
Do you own a RR? 🤣

Some people clearly are choosing Volvos over Jag/LR & price is not the only reason, if you were tightening your belt 65k plus is still £££, besides I think the Discovery model used to be very popular in SW London. Sales are also up in the USA & China.

Like I said if I woke up with multi millions tmw I’d keep my Volvo, get a G wagon & an Aston Martin. Also my dream car, a 1950s Mercedes SL convertible.

tenbob · 01/07/2019 12:41

Entry level Volvo is £50k
Entry level RR is £85k

Highest specced Volvo is £71k
Highest specced RR is £180k
So yes, there are many points at which a Volvo is half the price of a RR

My original point is that in my part of SW London, RR reign as the rich person car of choice, and while not a budget option by national standards, it’s a nice car at a significant cost saving if you’re happy to forgo a bit of luxury

fancynancyclancy · 01/07/2019 13:03

Entry level Volvo is £50k
Entry level RR is £85k

not half price & as most are going for the hybrid option a much smaller gap. And most families here favoured the Discovery for the extra seats/space as opposed to a 200k RR option.

I’m in Nappy Valley, born & raised here so plenty of friends in different surrounding areas & Landrover/Jag popularity is shifting plus the new XC90 is only a few years old so still gaining traction. Maybe it’s a age thing, I’m in my 30s.

I would say the rich persons car of choice is the Bentley 4x4 thing, that is ugly.

LakieLady · 01/07/2019 13:41

When I bought my elderly Audi estate, the couple were selling it because of a huge repair bill on their Discovery.

It had just failed its first MOT and was going to cost £3k to fix - a £3k repair bill on a 3-year old car! DP just looked at him and said "Are you sure you're getting rid of the right car?" and the bloke looked proper rueful.

I wonder how he's getting on with it? I've had the Audi nearly 5 years now, and it's only cost me for tyres and brakes, nothing's actually broken on it. I wouldn't mind betting that his Disco's cost more over the same time.

SnakeInTheSystem · 01/07/2019 14:04

So much jealousy on this thread:
‘I wouldn’t even want a Range Rover’.
‘Rich people don’t need to flaunt their wealth, they drive old bangers’ - whilst the ultimate rich people, the royal family, privately drive around in a selection of Range Rovers, Aston Martins etc (and the majority of them are not old bangers, before any of you jump on that).
Yadda, yadda, yadda.
You can masquerade and justify your posts however you like, but please don’t try to say that it isn’t jealousy because it is. Why otherwise would you give a monkeys what anyone else drives?
People like nice cars and sometimes certain cars become fashionable. End of.
So, why don’t you haters drive what you want to drive without comment, and let other people do the same?
And for the record, I drive a Citroen C1. However, I sometimes have occasion to hire a car and I always choose a big 4x4 because they’re great fun and I love them for long drives.

boooey · 01/07/2019 14:10

A lot of people can't drive them properly though. RR drivers usually take up all of the road on narrower streets and barge their way through, a lot of people have such bad spatial awareness in them combined with arrogance/ not wanting to scratch it, even when it is the other driver's right of way. People don't seem to understand how wide their car is and how sometimes moving over a little would help everyone.
