Rich people = same car

To wonder why all the loaded people at my kids’ school drive the same car - Range Rover/ Land Rover? Surely there are more choices to spend money on?? They are like sheep!

I love my LR Discovery. Had other cars but prefer this one. So comfy and easy to drive.

PettyContractor · 25/06/2019 17:29

I've always found Range Rovers ugly, and their size (width) is a drawback as far as I'm concerned. But if you have a lot of money to spend on a car, then the interiors of Land Rovers and Jaguars offer more options than you can get in other mass-market cars. (German brands like Mercedes, BMW and Audi won't offer you the same amount of choice with regard to interior.)

(The Evoque is the exception in the looks stakes, I nearly bought one because of the exterior appearance.)

Yogagirl123 · 25/06/2019 17:29

People I know that are seriously wealthy drive old cars.

People that want to appear that they are wealthy often sign up for expensive leases/hire purchase etc.

I agree with PP keeping up with the Joneses’

SushiTime · 25/06/2019 17:29

It's a trend. The same reason people buy cockerpoos and name their child Olivia etc.

OP...hopefully one day you'll have one :)

YouJustDoYou · 25/06/2019 17:30

Those darn rich people

Backwoodsgirl · 25/06/2019 17:30

The new Discovery is medium sized SUV that’s not particularly practical. The Range Rover is a pavement princess.

Banana1984 · 25/06/2019 17:30

I live next to a private school and the parents mostly drive 4x4 range rovers or land rovers or 4x4 porsche. Occasionally the 4x4 BMW. So it is kind of true lol

leckford · 25/06/2019 17:30

Do you live in Jersey the RR is the vehicle of choice to kids at the private schools, SO necessary in a 45 sq mile island where one can barely go above 20mph. Unless you are a prat in a souped up Subaru who can usually manage 100 mph in narrow roads at 1am in the dark!

NoSauce · 25/06/2019 17:30

Oh and I’m not keeping up with anyone or showing off or anything awful. I just like driving them. Some strange theories on here to why people have them.

Whoops75 · 25/06/2019 17:31

They have a hitch for pulling the horse box silly 🙃

EarlGreyOfTwinings · 25/06/2019 17:32

Those darn rich people
that's the point, they are not.

Nothing wrong in buying the car you need - I know people who need their 4x4 in the winter or they would really struggle to drive home. No one can deny that most of the RR or LR owners buy them for the status. It's funny.

FurFoxSake1 · 25/06/2019 17:33

Buying a brand new range rover on finance is as clever as literally burning money. My friend has one and the boot is tiny. They're terribly nouveau riche. Very gauche.

Csleeptime · 25/06/2019 17:33

We have something similar and it's certainly not because we are wannabes as people above state. It's because it's a very safe car for our kids and has loads of room for all their crap. Visibility is better too. Not everything is about people trying to show off or fit in. Why do people have to berate everyone's choices on mumsnet

SandyY2K · 25/06/2019 17:33

Perhaps because they can afford them
like them, they are spacious, and comfortable.

Some of the comments here make ppl sound terribly jealous.

Having something expensive when you can afford it is hardly showing off.

If that was the case, we'd say the same about ppl with luxurious houses, expensive jewellery and everything else money can buy.

SushiTime · 25/06/2019 17:35

@SandyY2K exactly!

This thread is quite cringe.

pinkcardi · 25/06/2019 17:36

Round here they are a middle class thing.

Most truly 'rich' people I know (ie several large houses, don't need to work) have battered old cars. So one has an ancient BMW with a convertible roof that doesn't work, or a lady who owns a large chunk of the midlands who drives an older Skoda.

FurFoxSake1 · 25/06/2019 17:37

@sandyy2k But there is something about the range rover in particular. Like really blingy expensive jewellery or columns outside of your house. It's tacky.

It's class snobbery rather than money I think.

tillytrotter1 · 25/06/2019 17:38

No problem with their choice to buy one but if The can't drive and park it they shouldn't have one. I was told by an angry woman that she needed a particular parking space because her vehicle was hard to park. As I told her the problem isn't the vehicle it's the driver.

pinkcardi · 25/06/2019 17:39

@SandyY2K yes, agree, let people pick whichever car they want.

Most of the school mums on my run are in large Audi or Volvos. I'd imagine because they are comfortable, safe and roomy

EarlGreyOfTwinings · 25/06/2019 17:39

No one is jealous, we just witness the idiots who can't drive, can't park and have a certain attitude, and don't need them.

you do know you can have a much more expensive car than a RR without showing off? Smile And not even on finance...

My favourite people are the ones with a car bigger than their house! I can't help but laugh I have to say. Childish, I know, but come on, it's funny.

CherryPavlova · 25/06/2019 17:40

No. I live amongst some incredibly wealthy neighbours. Very few drive Range Rovers - too morge. Ancient defenders or pickups mainly. Skodas are popular as are ancient Volvo estates.

SandyY2K · 25/06/2019 17:40

Not everything is about people trying to show off or fit in. Why do people have to berate everyone's choices on mumsnet

Because they have a touch of the green eyed monster.

If someone chooses to buy a new car on finance, why is that anybody's business but theirs?

Finance of most types screw you over, but there's a price to pay, if you want something and can't afford it in one lump sum.

If the boot is tiny, maybe that's not their priority.

The judgement says much more about you, than the car owners, who have simply bought the vehicle of their choice.

Passthecherrycoke · 25/06/2019 17:40

I don’t really get it - they’re not that expensive new, and second hand easily comparable to the price of a new Ford Focus. Why would they be for rich people? Am I just surrounded by rich people or something?!

finallyy · 25/06/2019 17:40

Are range rovers really affecting your life that much, you have to make a ridiculous thread full of jealous and inverse snobbery comments.

They are nice, spacious cars, and are driven by those that can afford it. Guarantee they had other options, but this was the most suited to them.

Knitclubchatter · 25/06/2019 17:41

They are a nice car especially when loaded with all the bells and whistles.
