To report parents for not registering the birth of a child

Should I stay out of it or report? I'm concerned the child could fly under the radar if there are any concerns if they are not 'in the system'. Who would I report to?

OP posts:
Proteinshakesandtears · 25/06/2019 13:00

moon2 ok so what if a parent thinks hitting their child is ok? Not a light spank? They believe this because they feel hitting their kids gets the devil out of them?

Or is that no because it's a religious ideology?

Or they hit their kids to toughen them up. Their ideology is that the world is coming to end and we will live in a apocalypse where our children will need to be strong and ruthless to survive? These people also store, and teach their kids to use illegal weapons? Because it's their belief the children will only survive having these skills.

Do we pander to them?

The kids are being deprived, because the parents are making poor choices. Not because the state is depriving them. When parents make poor choices that impact kids for their entire lives, the state will step in. They will (and have) put laws in place to protect kids from this.

You can not just choose to ignore the law.

And again. How does a 16 year old provide proof of their birth, if there is no record kept.

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 25/06/2019 13:11

ive her a chance to understand all the ramifications as mentioned here before considering reporting her if she’s no sign of abuse

Great. Tip the neighbour who is displaying red flags the size of Mount Everest off. And possibly harden her opinions on the matter.
What if the neighbour is abusive and the neighbour moves? No-one will know wherer this child is. It might be years before anyone has concerns again.

No. This is a time to call the professionals in, who have dealt with these situations before. They should be the first reponse. They will identify whether there are other concerns (for example, whether either adult is experiencing domestic violence), and explain why the child needs a birth cert sensitively and professionally. They might even convince the neighbour.

OP is unlikely to achieve any changing of minds herself.

Proteinshakesandtears · 25/06/2019 13:24

Surely, if the parents are good parents and made this choice, they will have made themseleves fully aware of the ramifications.

They will have thought about and discussed 'what happens if the child falls ill, will the hospital find out? What if they seperate us from the child while they verify we are actually the biological parents? Can we risk taking them to hospital.'

If they are good parents, apart from the fact they made this poor decision. OP wont be telling them anything they dont know. They do know and dont care.

Or they make piss poor rash decisions without looking at the impact on their child. In which case, do you really think they will say 'oh never thought about that. Let's get the child registered?'

That's in addition to what JamieVardysHavingAParty has just posted.

One of my favourite levels of cognitive dissonance is the Australian Flat Earthers.
Given that Flat Earthers of the N. hemisphere believe that Australia is just made up and full of paid actors who lie about its existence, Australian Flat Earthers are just so far down the rabbit hole they've tunnelled up their own arses.

I know this is barely relevant to the discussion here but I see it veered away from the simple situation of "unregistered children are at risk of unnoticed abuse and will have difficulties later in life getting the basics they need, such as NI number, job, driver's licence, passport, bank account, credit, married, their own children's passports" - all because of some numpty ideology.

VeeJayBee · 25/06/2019 13:49

YANBU. It would be very easy for this child to go under the radar. Having immunisations isn’t compulsary and it is possible the family think they are doing the best for their child by home schooling, not immunising or registering the child - but it could also be neglectful and dangerous when it comes to health issues and like someone else said, the possibility of abusive behaviour. You can’t tell so best to report it to social services and let the professionals do their assessments. Well done for looking out for this child.

SerendipityJane · 25/06/2019 14:33

Anyone remember the Jonestown incident ?

Isatis · 25/06/2019 14:35

These children would not be allowed to travel abroad without a guardian so when else would they need that passport? They would not get an NI number till they are 16. Nor claim benefits till they are 18 so those particular reasons don’t really stand up to cause of abuse.

Because they'd still need a passport if their guardians want to travel abroad with them?

Jembobb · 25/06/2019 17:06

Apologies if this has already been clarified but are you 100% sure OP, that the parents are referring to birth registration as opposed to school registration? School registration is absolutely not compulsory by law.

Anon6356237 · 25/06/2019 18:09

Reported to NSPCC. Yes I am sure they meant birth registration.

OP posts:
Proteinshakesandtears · 25/06/2019 18:18

Well done OP.

If, as some suggest, they actually meant for school or are lying to sound very interesting it will come to nothing.

So no risk.

I hope NSPCC can do something.

Proteinshakesandtears · 25/06/2019 18:26

I always worry, on threads like these what people are trying to achieve when they post inaccurate information. It's like some people either like to lie, genuinely dont know they are talking bollocks or really want to encourage the OP looking the other way.

I am not talking about moon as she is engaging in discussion.

But people like the poster who claims everyone is just conned into thinking its illegal to not register your child and it's easy to get passports, national insurance numbers etc. Then when corrected dont come back or provide any links to where they have read it.

Obviously that poster hasnt looked into it at all. So what do they get by posting bollocks on quite a serious issue?

SerendipityJane · 25/06/2019 18:57

Equality with politicians ?

Seeleyboo · 25/06/2019 19:43

Definitely report. Try reading Educated by Tara Westover. She was a child who was unregistered. No medical records as her father didnt believe in medical care and uneducated as she was never sent to school. Run away at 16. This is when she discovered she didnt exist.

MangoMummy19 · 26/06/2019 09:35

Is is any of your business how somebody else raises their child??? No. Stop being a busy body Op and go and get a life. Maybe become a social worker if you are so bothered. For you to know anything about this child you must be close to the family, imagine somebody you think is sound enough to have around your child reporting you to the authorities, and you recon there is something wrong with them?? There is nothing wrong with them not wanting their child in the system when all they are doing is protecting them from bored people like you!!! Mind your business and drink 8 litres of water a day and eat your 5 pieces of fruit and veg fgs.

SerendipityJane · 26/06/2019 09:47

Well done OP.

There are some really thick people out there, aren't there ?

Isatis · 26/06/2019 09:48

Is is any of your business how somebody else raises their child???

Yes, MangoMummy19, if there is evidence that suggests the child could be being harmed, it's absolutely everyone's business. And there are are red flags here - classically where people don't want their child "in the system" it's because they've been trafficked or are being abused or neglected. It also tends to mean that that child isn't getting necessary health checks etc. As many people have been pointed out, leaving a birth unregistered exposes the child to all sorts of problems in the future.

Proteinshakesandtears · 26/06/2019 09:55

The short answer is Yes, it is everybody's business when a child is having decision made for them, that has far reaching consequences for the child.

If you want the long answer read the thread and you will see why this should be reported.

And theres lots wrong about not wanting to register your childs birth, to keep them out of the system.

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 26/06/2019 09:58

MangoMummy

Read this, and then come back with a cogent argument that acknowledges that child abuse exists and what "being outside the system" means. It means no driving licence, no bank account, no passport, no university, no right to claim benefits, no legal employment.

If that's what you want for your own child, get yourself on a parenting course.

SummerSeasoning · 26/06/2019 10:05

We have to look out for children's basic welfare.

SerendipityJane · 26/06/2019 10:23

Isn't there a concept that "it takes a village" to raise a child ?

Reporting in this case is being a good neighbour. Maybe not directly to the family mentioned. But to all of us who have to also live in the same society and want to keep all children as safe and happy as possible.

Proteinshakesandtears · 26/06/2019 10:49

OP is being a good neighbour to the child.

The child who is a human being. A person in their own right, who has their owns rights.

One of which is to be registered as a citizen.

nerysw · 26/06/2019 21:11

This is so scary. How a parent can love their child and yet not register them for the free health care we are so lucky to have is a massive warning. Two words - herd immunity.

Thankfully nonsense like this is a minority view.

Does the name Victoria Climbie mean anything to you? I'm not saying these parents are a danger to their child in this way. But people adopting your attitude led to Victoria's death. If it is a simple disagreement over parenting styles I agree. But when it is something like this it is everybody's business.
