So many threads have husbands / partners off doing their unidentified hobby. AIBU to ask what are these mysterious pursuits that our menfolk do?

Mine goes fishing...

Mine does car rallying. He is really enthusiastic about it, bless him.

Laniakea · 20/06/2019 22:56

gym (6:30 every morning - at least he brings me a coffee before he goes)
plays bass (he's got progressive deformity of his hands so won't be able to much longer Sad )
builds stuff (furniture, stairs, houses)
worries about our cats (surprisingly time consuming)

fatfluffycushion · 20/06/2019 22:58

Travelling

Whilst I don't understand cricket, at all, I could definitely see myself enjoying getting quietly sozzelled in the sun under a hat, while the men tire themselves out. Sounds eminently doable.

Mine loves his admittedly glorious garden, tennis, water sports.
Nothing takes over or causes strife, unless I start buying too many random plants that he then has to find a sport for.

Until MN I really didn't know any cycling people or that it was the scourge of the modern marriage.

Wine. He studies (has taken various qualifications- which a sommelier would have to do), collects wine, is on the committee of a local wine society and reads ooodles of wine books and publications.

It’s quite nice as I get to drink some lovely ones and go on fancy vineyard visits and tasting tours etc!!

adaline · 20/06/2019 23:03

Cycling
Surfing
Watching re-runs of Vicar of Dibley

Korvalscat · 20/06/2019 23:03

Boats, bloody boats.
Building and showing model boats
Dinghy sailing
Rebuilding a yacht - which was supposed to take 2 years but we are now 5 years and counting - every Saturday
Pottering in the garage workshop making things for bloody boats.

Also watching the news and weather and discussing it! Weather I can cope with but fucking Brexit and the Tory leadership contest...

LaLaLanded · 20/06/2019 23:07

Archery
Reading
Wine
Cooking (win for me)
Watching (and agreeing with John Oliver)
Board games (cool ones)

I enjoy the same things. We did start archery together but I made a very quiet decision to let him get on with it - I have plenty of other things in my life and thought he might like a hobby that is ‘just his’.

God, he has a million hobbies, and they all result in masses of Essential Equipment all over the house and garden.

  1. Gardening
  2. Breeding and keeping chickens
  3. Beekeeping
  4. Buying rubbish at car boot sales which he claims he can sell at a profit, and then not selling it.
  5. Fixing broken engines and tools
  6. Repairing our clapped-out old cars
  7. Carpentry
  8. Cooking
  9. Brewing beer and wine
10. Fishing 11. Supermarket shopping. I kid you not, he goes every single day and yet only buys about half of what's on the list. Sometimes he returns with stuff which nobody in the house actually likes, and I give it to the food bank. It's still better than doing the shopping myself though! 12. Going to the pub

I'm sure there are nore which I've forgotten.

Kittykatmacbill · 20/06/2019 23:17

Road cycling / zwifting, reading journals related to his field of work and listening to extremely annoying late 1990s / early 2000s dance music - one of main hobbies is to try to get down stairs before him in the morning and put on radio 4.

OccidentalPurist · 20/06/2019 23:23

My DH does off-road cycling twice a week on an extreme trail that looks like Alton Towers to me now. I used to do it with him until DCs were born and I shudder at the thought now.

Also motor sports gaming every Friday night with a friend until 4am if that counts - they even construct a makeshift 'car' using cushions and side tables etc (they're 46!!).

ClaphamOmniwuss · 20/06/2019 23:46

Watching football. Used to play it too, but no more. Playing chess, a lot! Running - he’s actually really good at it, which is probably surprising to look at him. Like a couple of others, supermarket shopping! He buys too much confectionery when he goes though...ferrying the kids to various sporting fixtures...it may not sound like a hobby, but he definitely enjoys watching their sports. He needs more free time actually I think, but we’re just both really busy with work and kids, so it’s tough!

Historydweeb · 20/06/2019 23:48

Cutting down trees with a chainsaw, farting, and eating whole tubs of ice cream in one sitting.

HappenedForAReisling · 20/06/2019 23:51

Snowmobiling.

OccidentalPurist · 20/06/2019 23:52

@MulberryPeony "watching other people clean their cars on YouTube" is this a thing? That's hilarious!!

thatonesmine · 20/06/2019 23:52

Collecting and restoring scientific antiques.

ToothlessReg · 21/06/2019 00:14

Running - he runs most days and regularly enters half marathons (mental, but he has lovely legs!)

FlamedToACrisp · 21/06/2019 01:28

My (second) DH's hobbies are NOT watching, playing or umpiring any sports. I love him.

soulrunner · 21/06/2019 01:32

Outrigger canoe

violetbunny · 21/06/2019 01:38

Birdwatching.

Our holiday locations are usually determined by how many new birds he might see there. I've visited more sewage works than I care to admit to (often described as "prime" spots by DP since the smell attracts the birds 🤢)

MoominKitty · 21/06/2019 02:42

Haha mine too! Currently have boxes and boxes of war hammer models surrounding his computer desk 😂. Still makes Christmas and birthdays easy to buy for!

GinGeum · 21/06/2019 06:36

Golf, cricket, shooting, gardening... he doesn’t get time to do any of them more than about twice a year, but I’d also argue that his job (farming) is also a hobby, he loves it that much!

BlueSkiesLies · 21/06/2019 06:37

Why hobbies do you all have?

I hope the list is as long.

Tudorblue · 21/06/2019 06:40

Gaming....so much gaming.

Charley50 · 21/06/2019 06:41

Lol! Mine also likes watching things being made in factories and watching Chinese and Japanese cooking techniques on YouTube.
