Simplicity and perfection.
Everyone has always forgotten how nice it is, always enjoy it and you can't really fuck it up.

Ooh we had exactly that experience at the weekend, ran out of time and energy, had a look in the fridge/freezer and remembered the concept of s/e/c. Added beans and a couple of hash browns too. Just a delight.

wotsittoyou · 20/06/2019 23:06

DeRigueurMortis

That sounds delicious.

If I've got a few mins extra, I make a similar recipe that's just a little more italian than middle eastern. It's: onions, garlic, peppers, tomatoes, parsley, lots of salt and pepper, poached eggs on top, and toast. Scrummy.

Tomatoes, egg and toast is just a devine combo.

DeRigueurMortis · 20/06/2019 23:15

Tomatoes, egg and toast is just a devine combo.

Made more so by the addition of avocado and a splash of balsamic vinegar.

DramaRamaLlama · 20/06/2019 23:15

A fried egg sandwich is not dinner food Shock

But two soft fried eggs between two slices of white bread with real butter and burger cheese is the breakfast of champions Smile

Absolute perfection!

Graphista · 21/06/2019 00:16

I'm veggie so it would be linda McCartney sausages cooked in that oven with the chips, halfway through either just turn or even better cut in half length ways and cook cut side up and they get crispy on that surface and soft inside yum! Add baked beans too.

What the frick is buppy bread?!

The comments about chips taking too long made me smile though.

My mum still won't use oven chips and as she's in her 70's I doubt she'll change now, but she can make proper fried chips from just dug potatoes in like 15 mins! She's the eldest of 6 and being a scots catholic from a poor family they had chips a lot, most mealtimes she'd be peeling, chipping and frying enough for at least 9 people usually more as friends and family who didn't live at theirs were often present for dinner time, and most definitely on a Friday.

I still remember the novelty for us kids of "helping" either gran do the fish - flour, egg, breadcrumbs - then they'd fry the fish and chips at the same time, served hot with peas, buttered pan loaf and plenty of salt and vinegar. - utterly lush!

LadyRannaldini · 21/06/2019 00:20

The egg is very soft and placed on top of the chips so it runs down beautifully! My favourite meal of this type is ham egg and chips, roll the ham round a chip and dip it in the runny egg, bliss. Eat your heart out Mr Blumenthal.

Duskyy · 21/06/2019 00:24

Yabu. Sausages are only good with chips if they're from the chip shop!

Now, swap the sausages for gammon and add some beans and it's all good!

cheeseislife8 · 21/06/2019 00:27

Definitely needs beans. And cheese!

Greensleeves · 21/06/2019 00:31

Nope. In order for it to qualify as a quick dinner, the chips would have to be oven chips. They are filth.

Best lazy dinner in my opinion is spicy lentil soup with crusty bread and butter.

DH reckons tuna pasta bake, the peasant. DS2 would probably say pizza or chicken stir fry and noodles. DS1 probably pasta and sauce with olives and mozzarella.

Graphista · 21/06/2019 00:34

"Doesn’t the yolk spurt out everywhere ?"

That's half the fun! Eat over the plate and let the yolk run onto the plate and mop the yolk up with the parts of the sandwich as yet not yolky. (That's a lot of yolk words)

Here in Scotland we also have the delicacy that is "hot rolls" crusty white bread rolls filled with any combination or just one of the following:

Fried egg, scrambled egg, tattie scone, bacon, Lorne sausage, black pudding, mushrooms, fried tomatoes.

My personal favourite is 2 fried eggs and tattie scone.

PregnantSea · 21/06/2019 00:39

How do you make chips quickly? Takes me ages to even just peel and chop the spuds...

But yes I agree it's a tasty tea

Whoops75 · 21/06/2019 00:45

Cheese in toast is quick

Chips and sausages take as long as a stir fry or omelette

PregnantSea · 21/06/2019 01:05

Oh, just seen the frozen chip thing.

Disregard my comment.

ilovepixie · 21/06/2019 01:09

Not as nice as bacon egg and chips

FlamedToACrisp · 21/06/2019 01:12

YABU. Corned beef hash - a.k.a. tin of corned beef, chop up and add 2 tins of baked beans, make Smash to accompany, serve. 5 minutes flat and a hot dinner is on the table.

OkPedro · 21/06/2019 01:18

Are people really cooking sausages in the oven? Surely you mean you grill the sausages?
Is there a reason I don’t know what gammon is Blush I’m not from the uk so maybe I call it something different?

Heaviestdirtyestsoul · 21/06/2019 01:20

My favourite quick tea is mackerel fillets on toast, second favourite is tinned tomatoes on toast and third would be cheesey beans with a poached egg on top. Is kelp powder a thing? I hear it's a good iron supplement but dont fancy actually ingesting it!

OkPedro · 21/06/2019 01:21

But yes sausage, egg and chips is the food of gods 💓

Oysterbabe · 21/06/2019 02:32

I always just stick them in the oven, easiest way to cook them. Gammon is just like a really thick bit of bacon.

IAmAlwaysLikeThis · 21/06/2019 02:34

Anything chips and beans.

Introduced my forrin husband to this way of life and he is enchanted.

honeygirlz · 21/06/2019 04:05

Gross, eggs for tea are disgusting. Maybe boiled or an omelette but fried eggs after 11am is Envy

ladymariner · 21/06/2019 05:01

Sausage and chips bunged in the oven is yummy, with runny fried egg.

But ultimate comfort food/quick tea is poached eggs on thick seeded toast, proper butter and grated mature crunchy cheese....work of the gods that is!

PregnantSea · 21/06/2019 05:05

Does anyone remember Shirley valentine making her husband egg and chips on steak night, because she fed the neighbour's dog the steak?

He was not a happy bunny.

redcarbluecar · 21/06/2019 06:02

6 a.m. and you’ve made me hungry! I agree that sausage, egg and chips doesn’t sound that quick though. It’s the sort of tea I’d prefer someone else to make for me! (And would love it)

User8888888 · 21/06/2019 06:14

Nope- no fruit or veg and actually it takes a while to do the sausages and then you need to wash up a greesy pan, pan for the eggs and the baking tray.

Fajitas or pasta are quicker, require less washing up and can be more balanced depending on what you add to the dish.
