To think 4 pints is a lot to drink

About twice a week (including every single Friday) DH goes out with his mates and drinks about this much. If it's a special occasion, it's more, but this is the norm.

He thinks of this is very moderate (and to be fair, he drank a LOT more in his youth. He's now 50).

The thing is, I find him really annoying when he comes home from the pub (and wants to noisily eat next to me while I'm watching my sitcoms/whatever), and if I'm honest I find him really unattractive when he's been drinking. It also means he is a pain in the arse every Saturday morning, and has no energy and is in a bad mood all day (though he denies it).

AIBU to be fed up?

Does he eat anything on these nights out?

I think four pints of strong lager would make me feel rough the next day if I had them on an empty stomach.

CaptainButtock · 19/06/2019 09:37

Wink1970 How lovely 😊

ChihuahuaMummy1 · 19/06/2019 09:38

4 pints in the week with work the next day = a lot

4 pints with no work,weekend etc= not a lot!

If dh went out with his friends on a weekend I'd expect it to be double that.My units would be double that on a weekend night out too.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 19/06/2019 09:42

Too much liquid affecting the brain 🤣

The only time that’s happened is with people off their tits on drugs, think you are a bit confused there

No one drinking 2/3 ltrs of water a day needs to worry about their brain 🙄

Mother40 · 19/06/2019 10:31

I have no idea how people don't think 4 pints is a lot. I would occasionally.drink maybe 5 pints at university years ago and would be really drunk. 4 pints twice a week definately not good for you.

purplelass · 19/06/2019 10:44

4 pints isn't a lot on average, but it sounds like it's too much for your DH if it's affecting his family life.

RottnestFerry · 19/06/2019 10:56

I think a previous poster got mixed up with recommended intake per hour and per day. Drinking 10-20 litres of water in one go could kill you. Four pints spread over an evening isn't.

TabbyMumz · 19/06/2019 11:26

@NinjaInFluffyPJs "Re: nursing the beer all night.
It's absolutely fine if someone wants just 1 beer, but gosh! I have never ever seen anyone nurse a beer all night. It goes flat and warm. Half pints would be better. Or just drink the beer and then move onto non alcoholic drinks. But like 5 hours old beer? Gives me shivers."

Who said anything about 5 hours! Obviously some people's nights out are longer than others! He doesn't nurse his beer, he drinks his beer as he wants to. Sometimes he does just get half a bitter shandy, then another one. He's not unusual here, some people don't want to be downing 4 pints or more, and some people don't drink alcohol at all. Not sure why so many people on this thread laugh at him having one beer.

TabbyMumz · 19/06/2019 11:39

For those laughing at the comment that too much liquid affects the brain;

Symptoms of hyponatremia can occur from as little as 0.8-1 gallons (3-4 liters) of water in a short amount of time (14).

Your kidneys can eliminate about 5.3-7.4 gallons (20-28 liters) of water a day, but they can't get rid of more than 27-33 ounces (0.8-1.0 liters) per hour (14, 15).

Therefore, in order to avoid hyponatremia symptoms, you should not drink more than 27-33 ounces (0.8-1.0 liters) of water per hour, on average.

YANBU. If it's having this effect, then yes, it's too much for him.

A lot of men (and women) think drinking a lot makes them more attractive. It doesn't.

Passthecherrycoke · 19/06/2019 11:43

It’s clearly bullshit Tabby, I don’t know why you keep perusing this liquids argument.

NinjaInFluffyPJs · 19/06/2019 11:49

@TabbyMumz no one (well except 1 pp) laughs at him having just one beerHmm

You said My dh makes one pint last all night.
That's what people are talking about. Beer gets flat and warm. All night can easily be 4-5 hours...

As I said, it's absolutely fine not to drink, or have just 1 or 10. It's people's choice. But beer just gets yucky when it's in a glass for too long. Unless it's Budweiser. That's yuck from the beginning so no change there😁

LadderLongLegs · 19/06/2019 11:53

@TabbyMumz. About your DH's one beer: I suspect that people who drink a lot (by some standards) often find those who have one pint disconcerting, so they're trying to find reasons (like disliking warmer beer) to find it disgusting/mean/whatever.
A lot of the more aggressive posts on this thread may well be from those trying to justify their own relatively high consumption (no idea why - it's no one else's business on this thread how much each of us drinks). So don't worry about it Smile

cstaff · 19/06/2019 11:54

4 pints of beer = not a problem
4 pints of gin / vodka = potential problem Grin

Sadie789 · 19/06/2019 11:56

His "four pints" is probably more like six pints in actual fact.

As someone with a DH who enjoys a beer or six at any opportunity I completely hear you about him being annoying when drunk - coming in full of inane chat, talking nonsense, taking offence at nothing, not going to bed or going to bed but sleeping badly, being useless the next day.

It's intensely annoying and extremely selfish.

LadderLongLegs · 19/06/2019 11:57

I think you're probably right, @Sadie789

For him it's not 4 or 5 hours.

NinjaInFluffyPJs · 19/06/2019 12:23

Well than it's not "all night" by anyone's standard tbh. And that's fine as well if it's an hour. Just tried to explain what did people react to.
Not 1 pint. But 1 pint lasting "all night" .

TabbyMumz · 19/06/2019 13:29

@Passthecherrycoke "i’s clearly bullshitTabby, I don’t know why you keep perusing this liquids argument."

Because it really is a thing, just Google it and it come up. Drinking too much liquid in one go is bad for your health. I remember this being a thing all over the news a few years ago when it was encouraged people drink 1.2 litres a day. Some people drank to excess and became brain damaged.

RickJames · 19/06/2019 13:31

Loving the comparisons to Europe.. like its so cultured in The Netherlands and Germany (where I've lived/live). People still get battered and do stupid things and throw up.

After the annual village Kerb party, a whole weekend of boozing and carrying on, the streets are awash with sick and broken bottles! It's awful trying to walk the dog.
I'm currently reassessing my drinking habits and am not drinking alcohol but have found I drink just as much liquid as ever whether that's herbal tea, juice or water.

I don't think consuming liquid is dangerous per se, not unless it's being forced upon you. 4 pints is a jolly night out but its not a lot IMO.

TabbyMumz · 19/06/2019 13:33

I meant all night of a night out. To us a night out might be getting somewhere at 8pm and being home by 11. That's 3 hours. In those 3 hours he might have one pint, or two halves and that's enough for him, he wouldn't want anymore than that.

IAmAlwaysLikeThis · 19/06/2019 13:34

rick I've lived in Germany too (half German) and people were always shocked at how much Brits drank. I've never seen people binge drinking there in the same way at all. They drink a lot sure, but not the way Brits do.

RickJames · 19/06/2019 13:40

@iamalwayslikethis

I would agree that ive never seen the 'town centre mayhem' style drinking here and also drunks don't generally fight/ smash things up. There is still a lot of drunkenness and alcoholism though.

I admire how every kind of public venue sells alcohol but people don't get inappropriately wasted. Festivals are another story though!

IAmAlwaysLikeThis · 19/06/2019 13:43

rick what I like is that you can go to a cafe and order a beer or a coffee and either is totally normal.

And I've never felt pressurised by German people into drinking. British people think you're some kind of hippy/Christian/health nut/alco if you don't drink.

mondaysaturday · 19/06/2019 14:26

@RottnestFerry
Where did the 6% come from? For all we know he drinks a 3.2% session ale.

OP said (quote) "He drinks quite strong beer (often 6%)". That's where 6% came from.
