to think that old people should mind their own business

My dd is 3months old and has a strawberry birthmark on her forehead{between her eyes}It is very obvious but doesn't affect her in anyway. While at the doctors with her today {for an unrelated matter}an old man in the waiting room decided to engage us in conversation and then asked me what i was going to do about her birthmark. I told him nothing as it would eventually go away.To this he replied "You should get it removed, nobody wants to grow up with a thing like on their face"

I was gobsmacked and at first thought i may have misheard him but his wife told him to shut up.I asked him not to speak about my daughter like that but he just shrugged his shoulders.

I had to leave the waiting room as i was shaking so much and close to tears. When he left he tried to say goodbye to meand i asked him to leave me alone .His wife then decided to have ago and told me she'd get worse than that and she probably desrved it .ffs how can a 3mth old baby deserve anything.

My dh decided to follow them outside and speak to them. After more words were spoken my dh came back inside and then the man came back and tried to say he hadn't meant it.Talk about red rag to a bull,i swear if he hadn't left i think my dh would have gotten violent.

Sorry for the long post but i needed to get this off my chest before i explode

Agree with Rubyslippers post.

I'm sorry this happened to you but age isn't necessarily a factor. YOu can be stupid at any age.

Tnog and expat - why??

expatinscotland · 24/07/2007 21:14

It's quick, TnOgu!

Good for you, Leati.

Horses for courses.

expatinscotland · 24/07/2007 21:14

Why, Mercy? Because I find most old people annoying and don't want to be one.

PrettyCandles · 24/07/2007 21:15

Retired doctors

Thank goodness they are retired - what must it have been like to be under their care!?

Mercy · 24/07/2007 21:17

Do you feel the same about the older members of your own family?

TnOgu · 24/07/2007 21:17

I'm frightened of getting old.

PrettyCandles · 24/07/2007 21:17

She's lovely.

Looks like you got a bit carried away applying a bindi

moljam · 24/07/2007 21:17

shes beutiful-lovely name too!
at them being retired doctors!they more than anyone should know better!

Leati · 24/07/2007 21:22

Unfortunately, that can be true but they can also be wonderful, too. My great-grandmother lived to be 95 and was wonderful everday of those 95 years. She fostered babies into her seventies and when she passed on she had photographs of every baby she fostered. Photographs taken with love and stored with care.

expatinscotland · 24/07/2007 21:22

There are no 'older' members of my family, Mercy.

They're all dead.

Most drop off from heart attack in their 70s.

expatinscotland · 24/07/2007 21:23

I'm not frightened of getting old, I just don't want to live here for years and years. Don't see what's so great about that, especially if your health is shit and you're old, too.

she is gorgeous - I LOVE dimples!!!

katybump · 24/07/2007 21:29

I don't have a problem with old people at all.It was just in this situation it was an old person that upset me so much i needed to speak about it.I know that if it had been a teenager or child i probably would have been more understanding ,but the attitude of these two people today has really upset me and i am still shaking .It was just unfortunate that they were old so it appears that i despise old people when really i was just venting my anger.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 24/07/2007 21:29

this is not as upsetting as your experience but ihave been asked/had the following comments amde about my kids:

'when are you getting his hair cut then?'

'i suppose he is chocking on chocolate?'

'he will run that fat off once he gets going'

the hair one on the bus, i was just minding my own business looking out of the window.
the chocolate one whilst sat on the bus as ds1 was eating grapes.
the fat one waiting for the checkout at tesco. (ds2 is 10 months old and has always been a cuddly bubba)

fannyannie · 24/07/2007 21:30

don't forget that when they were of 'child rearing age' something like a birthmark would have caused problems for them.

katybump · 24/07/2007 21:33

Thanks Kamikayzed.I think thats what the doctor called it last week but to be honest i was so shocked it had started bleeding that i couldn't take it in.It has faded where it bled to a lovely pale lilac colour so we now have a lovely marbled bindi effect going on
