To be cross about visitors not liking my dog

I have a Labrador who is the daftest dog you’d ever meet.

Due to my work children and parents visit my house. They know I have a dog who is harmless yet people still make comments like why is he barking and I don’t like dogs and physically wincing if he comes near them.

This is only on arrival and I put the dog in a different room for the duration of their visit, but I am getting really tired of anti dog people making comments and someone even asked me to ensure the dog was locked in a different room on arrival!

Given the fact that new people are informed I have a dog and he’s playful and barks I don’t understand people’s reactions. I understand not everyone likes dogs but why can’t people stop act like snowflakes and move on?

AIBU to feel totally fed up and only invite dog friendly people to my house?

I think most people have in fact comprehended the OP extremely well, GreytExpectations.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 21/06/2019 06:04

Are people arriving unannounced? If you know what time people are expected you need to shut the dog away and train it not to bark or bounce at people.

I had extra curricular tuition for years as a child at a house where a very bouncy dog "greeted" everyone on arrival. I absolutely hated it, was terrified & it worsened my fear/dislike of dogs. The smell in the house was also distinct and unpleasant to a non dog owner.

Many dog owners are blinkered to the fact that not every one likes dogs and if they are customers/clients of yours (paying you?) they absolutely should not have to tolerate your dog.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 21/06/2019 06:09

Oh and a "friendly" or "playful" dog is my worst fear of all. I hate being kicked or pawed or in any way sought out for attention by a dog. I am very much repulsed by most dogs.

category12 · 21/06/2019 06:58

Thing is, "playful" covers a multitude of possibilities.

Op's supporters are visualising nice doggy bringing you a toy to play with, (or whatever form of playfulness they prefer in a dog) . Op's detractors are remembering dog owners of their acquaintance's saying "he's just being playful! Ha ha ha" while their dog is leaping all over them and nearly knocking them over, and making no attempt to control them.

We've really no idea what sort of "playful" op's dog is. I'm thinking it's the latter sort because she's so defensive about her dog.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 21/06/2019 07:10

No I really hate any attention from a dog. I can't stand when they bring a toy to play with. I'm sure I'm not alone - I and all my family members would never ever agree to having a dog in their life..

Love dogs, if people don’t like dogs they are not invited to our house. We don’t lock her away.

Meet them at a pub/cafe

category12 · 21/06/2019 07:17

I wasn't really addressing your post, noidontwatchloveisland, it was more general. I mean, the only way a dog can please you is by not existing at all, so really you're a bit on the extreme end.

They are there for a service op is providing, her home is her place of business. How the hell can they meet her in a pub, especially with kids?

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 21/06/2019 08:36

Category12 - I can tolerate dogs much better when they are well trained and get plenty of time outdoors. I find the difficulties tend to happen when there are energetic dogs stuck in a house. I sympathise with the dogs in those situations! The dog owner can please people by training the dog, I have no objection to being in a room with a quiet well trained dog which doesn't approach people until it's owner signals that it is ok.

GreytExpectations · 21/06/2019 10:47

Children are sometimes sent out to walk their own small dogs around here. Yorkies, wiener dogs, small prey...

And as long as those dogs are well behaved and kept in control, along with the sighthound then there shouldnt be an issue. Personally, children shouldnt be walking their family dog alone no matter how small it is.

CynthiaRothrock · 21/06/2019 12:25

If they are visiting you as a friend then if they dont like the dog its their choice weather they interact with it or even visit you again.
But you said due to your work, so they are a client/customer? They have little choice to be there? They should not be subjected to your barking mutt. Sorry but if you are a professional in what ever you do and your clients are not comfortable in that environment it is your fault. What would happen if these people stop comming? I guess you lose income? How will you feed your dog with out income? Do these people reccomend you to others? If they are uncomfortable they will not reccomend you. You are shooting yourself in the foot over a dog. And i say this as a dog lover with a barky bounce mad dog myself. Put the dog away.

SVRT19674 · 21/06/2019 12:44

I don't like dogs barking at me or invading my space. I was in nasty situations as a kid with dogs out of control. Quite frankly you cannot control your fear/uneasiness. On the other hand I go to physio who is blind and has a labrador, it es beautifully behaved and I am totally at easy with him. He exudes calmness. YABVU OP no one should have to "put up" with your dog because you can't be bothered to educate it. And even less a paying customer....

GreytExpectations · 21/06/2019 23:02

YABVU OP no one should have to "put up" with your dog because you can't be bothered to educate it.

Another poster who didnt RTFT. Once again, barking for a couple seconds when someone is at the door is bot badly behaved. And what the actual fuck do you mean by "educate it"?! Dogs are not people 😂

mathanxiety · 22/06/2019 06:00

And as long as the sight hounds are well behaved and kept in control, then there shouldn't be an issue.

Fixed that for ya.

Children are well able to walk a small dog a few hundred yards up a street and back, and even to handle the poop scooping that goes with that. I am not talking about five year olds here.

What could possibly go wrong that makes you think it's not ok for a child to walk a small dog? Maybe you are concerned about the likelihood of encountering dog-owners who believe their badly trained and poorly controlled dogs are 'the daftest dog you'd ever meet' and 'playful'?

mathanxiety · 22/06/2019 06:03

Dogs are not people

Are you sure of that?
Because it seems to me that many people here don't quite understand that dogs have a nature that is not at all human, and that they need a clear hierarchy in the home because they are basically pack animals, not family members who happen to be furry.

GreytExpectations · 22/06/2019 07:45

mathanxiety maybe you should start a different thread about how much tou hate dogs? You will certainly get a lot of replies.

Fixed that for ya.

Dont fix my posts. So you feel its ok for small dogs to be out of control and only the larger breed (Sight hounds) have to be the ones in control? Nope, you are wrong (let me fix that for you by explaining) if an off lead small dog runs up to an on lead sight hound and the sight hound goes for it, that is 100% the small dog owners fault and its their dog not in control. HTH

😂. Heard it all now!

Come on Mathanxiety - tell us about your dog(s). Breed/age/qualifications ...?

GreytExpectations · 22/06/2019 12:20

*😂. Heard it all now!

I know right? Im guessing they will definitely not be a sight hound of any kind because those evil monsters prey on small children! 😂

Underhiseye2 · 22/06/2019 12:29

There are too many poorly trained dogs in the world giving dogs a bad name. My friend's dog always licks my trouser leg as a greeting and jumps up at me, I hate it. To all dog owners - please train your dogs if you expect people other than yourself to spend time with them
