I saw this in Manchester Canal Street this afternoon. or those that don't know "boy love" is code for the sexual attraction of men to pubescent and adolescent boys.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_Man/Boy_Love_Association

I am SICKENED. Paedophiles have no place in the LGBT community. The fact that this is being displayed in broad day light. Equally disgusted and dismayed.

I got so angry I compiled a tweet.

twitter.com/makemorenoise1/status/1138511812155072513

I am bisexual and I feel like my community is being hijacked by fetishists. I just saw this by chance in town today and I am appalled. Gay rights have NOTHING to do with this shit. We are being tarred with this brush. NO!

LGBT rights have been hard won. I am dismayed by the failure of gay right organisations to address this growing problem. If this scandal breaks who will take the blame? LGBT folk want nothing to do with these monsters. It's time our leaders put our house in order.

Is it definitely meant that way? Naive as I probably am, I would have seen it as a cutesy attempt at saying you love "boys" to be worn by a gay man.

The other meaning makes it abhorrent, obviously. I just wonder if it has been done in innocence - I'm quite worldly wise but didn't know about the alternate meaning

BogglesGoggles · 11/06/2019 20:06

Have they responded to your tweet? I expect it was just a case of ignorance (I had no idea until this thread)

ashtrayheart · 11/06/2019 20:08

It could be read that way, it could also be read in many non ‘paedo’ Hmm ways.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 11/06/2019 20:09

Could it have been an honest (if careless) mistake? Apparently Nike once produced 'Zyklon' trainers, which is worse, if anything.

recrudescence · 11/06/2019 20:09

I’ll bet they had no idea but you’re absolutely right - they should have.

Bezalelle · 11/06/2019 20:10

It's the Man/Boy Love association, not the Boy Love Association.

I'm not condoning paedophilia, but I think this T-shirt is celebrating "boy love" as in "liking guys" not "liking little boys".

But I could be wrong.

notlikelybyhalf · 11/06/2019 20:11

What is zyklon?

I’m scared to google Shock

ashtrayheart · 11/06/2019 20:11

A quick google would suggest that boylove in that way, has no space between the words.

19lottie82 · 11/06/2019 20:11

I take it as a pro gay t shirt not a pro peadophile t shirt.

Unshriven · 11/06/2019 20:13

OP - when you decided to repost this, you missed the nice women-blaming bit you included in your earlier post:

'This is not a drill. Women - wake the fuck up' Hmm

I still don't think many/any people are going to see that shirt and think 'paedophile'.

regmover · 11/06/2019 20:15

I see that shirt and think it's a joke t shirt for gay men.

DJLippy · 11/06/2019 20:15

No I am not being paranoid. If anyone is on Twitter I compiled a list with more info.

SrSteveOskowski · 11/06/2019 20:17

Agree with @19lottie82. I wouldn't have seen it as anything to with paedophilia, just as a gay pride t-shirt as in guys who like guys.

DJLippy · 11/06/2019 20:17

I still don't think many/any people are going to see that shirt and think 'paedophile'.

No but paedophiles are well aware of what "boylove" means. Honestly the gay community should be aware of codes such as this. They've been tarred by this brush for long enough.

Zyklon B was used in the Nazi gas chambers (just Googled and apparently it was Umbro rather than Nike)

wowfudge · 11/06/2019 20:17

Zyklon B was the cyanide based gas the Nazis used in the gas chambers.

IGottaSeeJane · 11/06/2019 20:18

Is this post serious! I have never read such self righteous nonsense in my life.

Hedgehogblues · 11/06/2019 20:19

Oh good lord. I used to have a "girls who do girls" t shirt. Nothing to do with pedophilIa and everything to do with colloquial language

Justanotherlurker · 11/06/2019 20:20

Stop looking at Alex Jones videos and get some perspective.

Did you deliberately miss the Girl love t shirts on canal street?

And people wonder why MN has the wider internet culture of being a joke...

NameChangerAmI · 11/06/2019 20:20

I wouldn't have know about the other interpretation either, so thanks for the thread.

And I agree, it reflects so badly on the LGBT community and could potentially be so damaging.

It's a vile message to have emblazoned on a t-shirt. Have you complained to the shop owner?

You could go old school & write a letter. Have you discussed it with others in the LGBT community? Is the general consensus that it's inappropriate, and in support of paedophilia?

Sparklesocks · 11/06/2019 20:20

I think ‘boylove’ (with no space) is the paedophilia one, boy love with a space just implies a pro gay T-shirt, as in boys as a word for males rather than underage boys.

Isthebigwomanhere · 11/06/2019 20:21

It's in a window on canal street in Manchester!!
It's days Boy Love in rainbow colours.
It's a Gay thing!!

DoyouthinkIcare · 11/06/2019 20:23

I've seen a t-shirt saying 'napalm death'. Think that is up there with zyklon and worse than this one.

FenellaVelour · 11/06/2019 20:25

They’re a band.

titchy · 11/06/2019 20:26

I suspect people shopping in Canal St will know exactly what the t shirt is alluding too.

Note - shops in Canal St don't tend to market themselves to middle aged MNers, hence why most here think it's perfectly innocent.
