I’m the same age as Villanelle - AIBU to feel inadequate in comparison? **Spoiler warning added by MNHQ**

She has a lot of skills for someone her age. Impressive career. Speaks several languages. Also she has an amazing wardrobe and does lots of international travel because of her work. I’m saving for a house deposit so haven’t been on holiday for 2 years.

AIBU to feel jealous/inadequate? I feel underachieving in comparison.

I had to google who she was and then found out that she's a fictional character?

If a fictional character is making you feel inadequate perhaps it would help to focus on building your self esteem?

madcatladyforever · 10/06/2019 09:25

YABU she is a made up character. I don't know anyone like that.

foxyknoxy30 · 10/06/2019 09:26

Maybe this is light hearted?I agree OP I am a bit in awe of her even if she is an accomplished killer and secretly a bit in love as well 😁

Grumpiestcat · 10/06/2019 09:27

My first thought was Villanelle must be the name of a contraceptive pill.

Cloverisover · 10/06/2019 09:28

I blame the education system. Such a narrow focus.

SingingLily · 10/06/2019 09:30

But she also has no family, no friends (if she makes any, they don't last long!), no social life apart from her sceptical and grizzled handler, no chance of any career progression and definitely no pension scheme. I bet you do. And I bet if she wasn't a total psychopath, she'd be jealous of you! 😁

PhilipMarlowe · 10/06/2019 09:30

She's very decisive isn't she? Casual acquaintance says he wishes he were dead? Neck broken, just like that! I bet she doesn't arse about on Mumsnet instead of getting on with her list of errands....

Jinglejanglefish · 10/06/2019 09:30

It is obviously lighthearted. She's a murderous assassin.

Cloverisover · 10/06/2019 09:30

Although actually I do remember being taught how to climb a rope at school but have never put the skill into use on a drainpipe.

HerSymphonyAndSong · 10/06/2019 09:30

Haha at some of these po-faced responses! I’m pretty sure I’m older than her so clearly long ago missed the boat on such an accomplished international career. But I’m not sure I want the miserable violent past that brought it about so I’ll live with it

Hollowvictory · 10/06/2019 09:32

Get yourself into a Russian prison, worked for her

TopiaryTractorTart · 10/06/2019 09:34

My life is exactly like hers. So much fun.

RuffleCrow · 10/06/2019 09:40

Well, presumably, you haven't murdered anyone in cold blood, so I'd say that's several wins for you.

I'm sure there's a Mitchell and Webb Look sketch along these lines where David Mitchell is comparing himself unfavourably to some famous artist at the same age. At young age the famous artist dies and DM says "And here the tables begin to turn..." Cracks me up every time GrinGrin

Reallybadidea · 10/06/2019 09:42

Are the serious responses supposed to be so funny? I can't tell...

ElspethFlashman · 10/06/2019 09:46

I'm always undecided whether she has an actually easy job or not.

She must do some research, but it seems a lot of her work is done through bare faced chancing her arm. Turning up in a waitresses uniform and styling it out and then garotting someone. 5 mins work and she gets a big wad of cash.

I mean when you think about the actual hours she puts in, it's very overpaid.

But then on the flip side she does have a serious shopping addiction and probably has zero savings. Definitely no pension.

So if it's any compensation OP I don't think she could buy any flat outright and would probably default on mortgage payments.

ElspethFlashman · 10/06/2019 09:48

I am quite jealous of the fact she constantly stuffs her face and spends most of her time lounging around and does zero exercise yet remains a size 10.

Hopeygoflightly · 10/06/2019 09:50

Well, I've killed a lot of people so I'm on par there, but am no where near paying off the mortgage, and mostly wear mom jeans so a bit behind on the looking fabulous while carrying out hits. I blame the kids. There's no way She'd be running around major European cities ( and Basildon) if she had kids.

FermatsTheorem · 10/06/2019 09:51

I think it's our education system failing us, personally. I would like to see all kids, not just the privileged few at private schools with cadet corps, coming out of school able to field strip a rifle, in the dark, while blind folded, in under 30 seconds. Tory leadership candidates - listen to this, I am the voice of middle England...

LakieLady · 10/06/2019 09:52

I'm in awe of her murderous skills, but it wouldn't do for me. I'd be constantly shitting myself in case I had to off someone who was better at murder than I was.

That couple of years in the Russian prison didn't look like fun either.

I'm essentially a bit of a wuss and risk averse, so it's not the life for me.

waterandmilk · 10/06/2019 09:53

But I don't think she has flexi time OP

ginghamtablecloths · 10/06/2019 09:54

She is fictional - therefore not real. Not average either - how many of us have got those skills at such a young age? Hardly anyone. She is young because I expect the writer felt that a young character is more watchable than the average middle-aged woman - sadly.

Don't waste your time and emotions on feeling inadequate by comparison.

ElspethFlashman · 10/06/2019 09:56

She is also micromanaged to an insulting degree. Just let the person who's hired to do the job, DO the job yeah?

Honestly, all that "you've got to make it look like an accident this time, stop showing off".... omg it's enough to make you want to throttle someone.

happybunny007 · 10/06/2019 09:57

I bet being a murderous assassin is nowhere as glamorous in real life!

Purplemond · 10/06/2019 10:00

Im sure Villanelle would be envious of those who get to live on Barry Island and own their own bus

Isatis · 10/06/2019 10:01

The problem with the international travel is that her work does get in the way of shopping and sightseeing.
