Moving the May Bank Holiday. Will this cause you inconvenience?

I work Mondays. I am still paid for the Bank Holidays. I don’t work Fridays. I have already made my holiday arrangements around child care for 2020 and now unless I can take a day off unpaid my plans are now up the creek. Also my job involves a diary of clients that book up almost a year in advance so this will now also need to be sorted.
Not a happy bunny, this should have been announced at least a year in advance for people accommodate. Angry

Sorry read most the thread Blush so this may have been said

I feel very sorry for anyone who had booked a wedding / family event / celebration specifically around the dates.

I also feel poor show and they should have looked ahead earlier. It's not unusual for many professions to be well booked up 2 years in advance.

caroline161 · 09/06/2019 22:22

Watch the lovely Harry (dd veteran) on BBC breakfast and have another think about what you are saying. The day has been moved to commemorate his friends, one of whom died in his arms. Aubu? Yes you are.

Abster2019 · 09/06/2019 22:26

The 4th May 2020 is my wedding day and I am gutted. Planned 2 years in advance to have the date and I'm now really worried about guests and the time they will have to take off work. I know it won't ruin my day and it's not the end of the world, but wedding planning is stressful and this is just something else to worry about!

seven201 · 09/06/2019 22:29

It's swings and roundabouts. I don't work Mondays (I didn't get to pick my set day off) and I don't get extra pay for the bank holidays I miss out on as I'm a teacher. So it means I get an extra day off next year. I think it's a nice thing to do to mark VE Day.

KnifeAngel · 09/06/2019 22:30

@freshstartnewme how is it a gain? That is how the company has always operated as do many factories here. They do full time hours. He will lose out on a full day paid for as opposed to a half day. If they ever take the Friday as holiday they have to use a whole days annual leave.

yorkshirecountrylass · 09/06/2019 22:32

It's 1 day, 11 months notice to commemorate one of the most significant events in the history of our parents and grandparents. It's thanks to the efforts leading up to that day - not just the years and months of notice, but the weeks, days and hours, that we are able to sit in our bubble and complain about the inconvenience of it all. It hardly seems unreasonable when you consider the sacrifices made by those who served that we have the inconvenience of swapping a day or two annual leave!!

Ohnotanothernamechange · 09/06/2019 22:41

Didn't this also happen in 1995? I was in school and remember it well.

I don't know why they can't just give us an extra holiday though like they did for the Queens jubilees and Will and Kate's Wedding?

freshstartnewme · 09/06/2019 22:45

how is it a gain?

Well I was making a bit light of the Friday afternoons off, I guess that didn't work.

blackteasplease · 09/06/2019 22:45

It seems a bit rough they aren't giving people an extra bank holiday tbh!

NicoAndTheNiners · 09/06/2019 22:50

I work in a university and we have timetabled for next year already. May is exam season. I'm nervous that we now have an exam on a BH.

Obviously we can move stuff about but a bit more notice would have been good.

And I feel sorry for anyone who has a wedding planned. As someone who got married accidentally on an extra BH (think to domwith the queen) I can tell you everyone stampedes off on holiday and half the invited guests can't make it.

But yes I get in the grand scheme of things the inconvenience is nothing compared to the events being commemorated.

FundamentallyTired · 09/06/2019 22:54

There will be tonnes of teachers who will lose holiday deposits. I know one who goes with a group of families and they will lose a collective deposit of over £1000.

It isn't enough notice.

freshstartnewme · 09/06/2019 22:55

Scottish schools had an exam on a bank holiday last month.

NicoAndTheNiners · 09/06/2019 22:55

Oh and centre parcs appear to have realised and the price of the new Bh weekend is now at peak Bh price. Sneakily they haven't reduced the price of the first weekend in May for anyone who doesn't realise! The third weekend is quite a bit cheaper.

NicoAndTheNiners · 09/06/2019 22:56

And the CP village I just looked at for a small lodge is sold out for what was the BH weekend. Not sold out for what's now the Bh weekend. So looks like a lot of people have booked and paid and probably won't be happy.

WelcomeToGreenvale · 09/06/2019 23:41

Great news for me, I don't work Mondays and reap no benefit from bank holidays normally.

SnuffleBadger · 10/06/2019 00:07

You won't lose a days pay, you will still be entitled to the bank holiday leave to take at another time.

mabelsgarden · 10/06/2019 02:14

I think it's tight. Yeah, having the Commemorative day is great. However, They could have/should have given everyone an extra bank holiday day; not poached the Bank Holiday Monday, and moved it to Friday. Hmm

flowery · 10/06/2019 06:17

”Great news for me, I don't work Mondays and reap no benefit from bank holidays normally.”

Then your employer is breaking the law

OddBoots · 10/06/2019 06:32

I may not have followed correctly but it looks like some employers give part-time/shift workers bank holidays off paid on top of the minimum holiday allowance if they are contracted to work that day. The staff not contracted that day still get their legal time but are missing bonus time off.

I am not sure that sounds a fair way to deal with things and this move might bring that to light and potentially cause a re-think.

If I was a Monday contracted staff member who will lose this perk once now I might think twice before grumbling as it might come back to bite me.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 10/06/2019 07:34

I think it’s marvellous that there will be this very important remembrance. BUT 11 months notice is NOT enough. It’s now been confirmed that I will not get my deposit back on the hotel I booked for the Bank Holiday weekend that is no longer a bank holiday. I can afford to take the hit... not everyone can.

Ohnotanothernamechange · 10/06/2019 07:51

It definitely hasn't been thought through properly. But then I'd expect little else from this shitty, incompetent and selfish government.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 10/06/2019 09:26

But then I'd expect little else from this shitty, incompetent and selfish government.

Such a shitty selfish thing, wanting to commemorate the anniversary. How very dare they.

calpop · 10/06/2019 09:39

I have no issue with commemorating the day, though of course will only be able to wat h it on tv as the traffic will be so bad and we wont be helicoptered in like the VIPs. It should have been an extra or optional BH though. Moving it from the Monday, where clearly many people, particularly teachers, incorporate it into their annual weekly holiday, booked at least a year in advance, IS incompetent.

Hollowvictory · 10/06/2019 09:42

Op, of course you can reorganise don't be silly. You need to cancel whatever you had booked for the Friday that will now be a bank holiday but presumably your clients will also be off then. So you email them and reschedule because it's now a Bank Holiday.
Not seeing problem?

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 10/06/2019 09:45

How is it selfish though?
