Moving the May Bank Holiday. Will this cause you inconvenience?

I work Mondays. I am still paid for the Bank Holidays. I don’t work Fridays. I have already made my holiday arrangements around child care for 2020 and now unless I can take a day off unpaid my plans are now up the creek. Also my job involves a diary of clients that book up almost a year in advance so this will now also need to be sorted.
Not a happy bunny, this should have been announced at least a year in advance for people accommodate. Angry

I've just had a look at my Rota for next year-I'm already off on the 8th May 2020, so no problems, but I am working that Week-end, so might miss the celebrations. I will get a day-off-in-lieu for the Bank Holiday.

I'm also off on the 15th August 2020 (VJ Day) as part of my annual holiday.

huggybear · 09/06/2019 10:53

It is a bit of an inconvenience but only in the sense that a bank holiday is a treat and a Friday but doesn't seem that much of a treat. An extra BH, now that's a treat. A Friday off? Not to much.

Dollywilde · 09/06/2019 10:54

Doesn’t affect me. A friend of mine toyed with the bank holiday Monday for her wedding but went with another date in the end thankfully! If she’d gone for it I’d have been ok with having the Tuesday off for travelling home but I’d have been annoyed at having to take 2 days of leave!

CrazyCatMamma · 09/06/2019 10:55

It’s not a holiday in my nhs trust anyway so makes no difference 🤷🏼‍♀️

Whatjusthappenedthere · 09/06/2019 10:59

I normally work Monday’s not Friday. So now I will need to either work and cancel my arranged holiday or take the day off unpaid ( if I can as clients will now be moved into the currently empty day so my employer is likely to need me ) . There is no where else for them to go. I don’t have enough holiday allowance left to take it off paid.
But it seems it’s only me so I’ll leave it there. GrinGrin

When i say scuppers my plans, we've booked a Friday to Monday break and now have to see if we can both actually get leave for the Monday

Witchend · 09/06/2019 11:00

I'm similar in that I don't usually work Fridays and I do Mondays. However it's a big anniversary, and I look on it this way: Some of my colleagues work Fridays and not Mondays so they miss out on at least 3 bank holidays I normally get and I've never heard them complain, so it would be rather mean for me to make a fuss.

SleepingStandingUp · 09/06/2019 11:00

I normally work Monday’s not Friday
Which you'll still be doing that week.

longtimelurkerhelen · 09/06/2019 11:03

Why move it, just do an extra day? God forbid they give everyone another day off!

TanMateix · 09/06/2019 11:03

It is just a day, your job may be important but there may be a way around... not exactly as if the whole company will collapse if you missed a single day is it? What would happen if you are run over by a bus? with all due respect, I think your sense of self importance may need a tiny bit of a reality check.

Whatjusthappenedthere · 09/06/2019 11:03

soulrider. That’s what I mean. There is going to be a stampede on Monday to get the day off.

I'm the same as you OP, I work four days a week Mon - Thu. I'm gutted about the change of date.

Andcake · 09/06/2019 11:04

Affects me. I work 4 days a week not Fridays so lose a bank holiday and a long weekend I usually get a lovely 4 day weekend for to visit distant relatives who we now won’t see for a year as childcare and holiday allowance makes it difficult.

I’m very angry.

I care about VE Day but really upset this morning about losing a day.

As my contract is 4 days no way I can rearrange.

Ruined my Sunday 😭

Whatjusthappenedthere · 09/06/2019 11:05

Tan? I’m not suggesting the company will collapse? Where did that come from? Hmm.

The govt don’t consider people who work flexibly or 4 days - mostly women!
And most non 5 day people don’t work Fridays so I believe.

WeeDangerousSpike · 09/06/2019 11:07

I must be missing something, this makes no sense to me. Why would it be unpaid now if it would have been paid before?

You get 5.6weeks paid holiday including bank holidays. You don't have to take bank holidays off - you can choose to use any or all of those 8 days on any day you / your employer wants.

If your shift pattern meant you always had Mondays off then you'd still get 5.6 weeks holiday entitlement.

Surely if you just do nothing you'll have Monday off as holiday (as its already booked) and have Friday off as a normal non working day?!

Heyha · 09/06/2019 11:08

Be interesting for any teachers that have booked a holiday for the usual long weekend but will now be expected to be in work on the Monday as normal as we obviously can't take holidays in term time..however I'm sure it'll work out, it's only a day after all. It's a good idea but maybe they could have announced it last year rather than this.

WreckingIt · 09/06/2019 11:08

It doesn't make any difference to me as I always book that week off work anyway.
So whether it's on the Monday or the Friday, I still wouldn't be in work.

LarkDescending · 09/06/2019 11:09

It does cause a potential problem for my choir, which always organises an overseas tour on the May Bank Holiday weekend. Our 2020 tour is already booked and paid for (for over 120 people) and many of them are now saying they will struggle to get the Monday off.

Chewbecca · 09/06/2019 11:09

It’s pretty unusual for people to have their entire holidays and childcare for 2020 planned at this point, YABU.

Loveislandaddict · 09/06/2019 11:09

I hadn’t heard of this until then.

The Sweeps festival in Rochester is held over those three days. Plans have already been made, and i’m Sure they are not the only ones.

Imisscheese · 09/06/2019 11:10

It's awesome, I work Wednesday to Friday so never benefit from bank holidays.

MorondelaFrontera · 09/06/2019 11:12

I think it's a very good idea, and there is more than enough warning. It's one day.

I do feel for people who have already booked a holiday, but so far in advance, you are bound to meet with unexpected events anyway.

tonsattingforbjudes · 09/06/2019 11:12

I'm delighted! I've worked Weds-Fri for the last few years so just accept that bank holidays are no bonus to me. Now I actually get one! So thank you Witchend for thinking of the other end of the week crowd! 11 months is reasonable notice.

More seriously though, there is a very good reason for this change. It is the last major (50/75/100) anniversary we will have of VE Day when the last few veterans will be alive to be honoured.

soulrider · 09/06/2019 11:13

It’s pretty unusual for people to have their entire holidays and childcare for 2020 planned at this point,

We rarely book anything more than 6 months in advance, think this is the first time ever! I've only got this booked as it's my 40th and the place we're staying gets booked up way in advance. Combining it with the bank holiday was the only way we could make it work, as OH can't book leave that far in advance and they often have times where no leave is allowed. so we thought we were safe with the bank holiday!
