Moving the May Bank Holiday. Will this cause you inconvenience?

I work Mondays. I am still paid for the Bank Holidays. I don’t work Fridays. I have already made my holiday arrangements around child care for 2020 and now unless I can take a day off unpaid my plans are now up the creek. Also my job involves a diary of clients that book up almost a year in advance so this will now also need to be sorted.
Not a happy bunny, this should have been announced at least a year in advance for people accommodate. Angry

If the VE celebrations were that important to the Govt, they'd have had a separate one off public holiday.

But they are not, they couldn't give fuck, just so long as they are seen to care.

What is sooooooo special about the 75th as opposed to the 25th 50th etc? or the 76th for that matter?

We should celebrate freedom in Europe every year, with its own bank holiday.

LarryGreysonsDoor · 09/06/2019 19:23

Poor you, OP. Didn't the authorities consider part-time employees and their holiday plans before making this change? I mean, it's not as though it's being done to commemorate the end of a war that killed millions of people...

Don’t be so soft. Did you miss the bit where the op said she is from a military family? No where is she or anyone else saying that there shouldn’t be commemorations or a bank holiday. Rather that it is late notice.
Despite the many assurances on this thread that it won’t effect anyone and it’s plenty of notice there have been many cases where it is going to cause problems. It is possible to be pissed off with it whilst still reflecting and giving thanks to those who gave their lives.

flowery · 09/06/2019 19:27

”Bank holidays come from the government, so in my view they should be treated differently to normal annual leave and not pro-rated for part-timers.”

You think part timers should get less paid leave than full timers on a pro rata basis, just because some of that paid leave takes place on days set by the government?

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 09/06/2019 19:39

Yep, the pro rata thing is fair.

PuppyMonkey · 09/06/2019 19:54

This thread is making me all tetchy because people still don’t understand why part time people should expect bank holidays.Confused

Ok. So my former colleague and I both used to work 4 days per week. Exact same job and pay.

She worked Mon-Thurs.
I worked Tues-Friday.

Every time there was a bank holiday Monday, she only had to come into work 3 days that week as Monday was one of her working days. Yay for her.

That same week, I had to come in 4 days as Monday was not one of my working days.

Not fair - hence the pro rata bank holiday entitlement thing.

BrightYellowPostItNotes · 09/06/2019 20:06

@PuppyMonkey But you would both be entitled to exactly the same amount of leave. She will have had to use some of it for Monday bank holidays but you could have taken the leave any time you like. So really, you were better off!

It is nearing the point where there will be very few people who were adults at the end of the war, who can remember much about WW2. This year was probably the last commemoration of the Normandy landings with veterans in large numbers, as an example.

Ivy44 · 09/06/2019 20:15

@jasjas1973
WW2 was from 1939 to 1945 so a lot of the people who were alive then, won’t be soon. It’s important to commemorate it while at least some of them are still alive.

anothernotherone · 09/06/2019 20:21

The article ShatnersWig linked to stated that the commemorations are to ensure that such a conflict never happens again, and goes on to describe how

20,000 pubs will encourage drinkers to toast the hero's of the war...

Is the logic not a bit flawed?

Toasting war heros and preventing conflicts happening again seem not to be the same agenda.

Surely the horrors of war should be emphasised, not the heroics. The fact it was finally over after 4 horrific, tragic years of teenagers being slaughtered, young men and boys with PTSD being shamed and shot as deserters, people being blown to pieces in their own homes, unimaginable atrocities committed left right and center in Nazi Germany but also on the battlefield etc etc are what should be remembered.

Not red white and blue and village fetes and moving a bank holiday.

Seems a bit twisted.

jasjas1973 · 09/06/2019 20:29

Veterans have been going to Normandy in large numbers for decades, its just that the good and great have cottoned on to it.

In a years time there will be even less veterans, if it were that important for May she would have had the move this year or even earlier, let alone a separate specific BH, which is what such a momentous event deserves.

Pinching a BH is a bit of cheapskate way of celebrating to be perfectly honest.

PuppyMonkey · 09/06/2019 20:59

brightyellow - yes I know, but so many on this thread seem to think if you don’t work on a Monday you should just accept that you don’t get a day off on a bank holiday week, that’s just tough luck etc.

WhiteRedRose · 09/06/2019 21:03

Why are they moving it instead of just adding an additional one ffs 😳

People plan things like bankholiday weddings and holidays years in advance!

Ivy44 · 09/06/2019 21:03

Another bank holiday would be more appropriate and be more respectful to those that fought.

But on the topic of the thread, 11 months is enough notice for the vast majority of people to organise things. I plan about 4 months in advance but things happen and the best laid plans come unstuck, especially with a 2 year old in tow.

amy85 · 09/06/2019 21:05

Being selfish I think it's rubbish as I already have Fridays off so loose out on an extra day off....but in the bigger pic it's nice thing to do

daisychain01 · 09/06/2019 21:06

Pinching a BH is a bit of cheapskate way of celebrating to be perfectly honest

Given that each bank holiday costs the UK economy about £2.3bn, I expect the Government didn't want to be accused of increasing the burden by adding yet another holiday in May.

Violetroselily · 09/06/2019 21:09

Feel sorry for this couple and any others with a wedding planned

@NameChangeNugget

This has been known about for ages

How long have you known about it, and how did you find out so far in advance?

costacoffeecup · 09/06/2019 21:22

@Violetroselily cane on to post the same story, really rubbish for them.

Andcake · 09/06/2019 21:36

They won't be the only ones. after just reading the other thread about general lack of knowledge about ww2 I can just see this whole affair becoming racist or brexit jingoistic nonsense rather than a warning from history.
My grandad suffered huge pstd and died in a mental home reliving his war.

I am also personally pissed off abou losing a day off.

There are so many things annoying about it. It should be commemerated but also the govt are just playing god with people's lives. And yes the poor part time workers like me but they probably weren't considered because assumption of normal male middle class working patterns.

KnifeAngel · 09/06/2019 21:56

My husband will lose out. They do 4 long days Monday - Thursday and half day on Friday. Instead of the 9 hours he will only get 4 hours off.

I think I would view the fact that they have a half day every Friday more of a gain.

Oneminuteandthenallgone · 09/06/2019 21:59

No. Fab, saw it early Friday booked a long weekend in an eu destination for a fraction of typical bank holiday price.

OddBoots · 09/06/2019 22:06

They moved it back in 1995 for the 50th Anniversary too, didn't they?
