Moving the May Bank Holiday. Will this cause you inconvenience?

I work Mondays. I am still paid for the Bank Holidays. I don’t work Fridays. I have already made my holiday arrangements around child care for 2020 and now unless I can take a day off unpaid my plans are now up the creek. Also my job involves a diary of clients that book up almost a year in advance so this will now also need to be sorted.
Not a happy bunny, this should have been announced at least a year in advance for people accommodate. Angry

You can guarantee it will be an INSET day but I am sure nobody works that day because I live near the school and it's all closed up.

My school was all closed up on the inset day after the Easter holiday this year.... we were ALL (including lunchtime supervisors) at another local school having some joint training. BUT yes a random Monday at the end of the school year is likely to have been covered by ‘twilights’.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 12/06/2019 18:20

cant believe this will inconvenience people at all

You’re right of course... losing the deposit I paid for my Bank Holiday break is absolutely not inconvenient at all. 🙄

Feenie · 13/06/2019 12:41

Clearly, training can take place at a variety of different venues, depending on the training - it doesn’t have to be at the school. But I’m sure you could have worked that out for yourself if you had a think about it.

Sissy79 · 13/06/2019 12:43

First I’ve heard of this and yes it will inconvenience me because it’s been my birthday weekend since the beginning of time and now I’ll have to share it with my mate!!!

Petty I know but ffs

LizzieMacQueen · 13/06/2019 13:41

For the Scottish amongst us; I had a look on HMRC page and it's still showing that we'll get the Monday 4th and not the 8th. So I have absolutely no idea what to expect.

LizzieMacQueen · 13/06/2019 16:55

Replying to my own post. I see the ScotGov website has Friday 8 rather than Monday 4.

soulrider · 13/06/2019 18:55

Just out of interest, it's now Wednesday, so people have had a few days to ask for the now-non-BH Monday off. Has anyone done so and been refused?

My OH isn't allowed to book leave for next May at this time, so it's still up in the air for us. Because of the nature of his work it's not as simple as first come first served even when they are able to book leave. If the bank holiday was a different week entirely it would be less likely to be an issue, but because it now falls on the Friday, it will be harder to get the Monday off that week than if it was a regular week

Could be worse, my losses will be considerably less than 200,000

Interesting that the bank holiday date change in 1995 had 18 months notice

SaintAlice · 14/06/2019 08:26

All those people saying it will be an INSET day:
INSET stands for IN SErvice Training.
The teachers don't get a lie in and a day off. They go to a training course either at the school or elsewhere. A working day for them.
I think moving the bank holiday was ridiculous thing to do. Eleven months ahead is not long when you're planning a big event. Think about the Hastings Jack in the Green festival which is on the BH Monday and many other annual May Day events - where does this leave them?
What about people who have booked a weekend away and now find they can't get the time off school or work and will lose a deposit to cancel?
Even schools will have planned their calendar a year ahead. My school has a church service and lunch for GCSE leavers going on study leave - plus a year group photo which is already all booked - caterer, church, speaker, photographer. Everything will now need to be rearranged.

SaintAlice · 14/06/2019 13:04

Bank Holiday change will 'cost calendar maker £200,000' www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-48631198

floraloctopus · 15/06/2019 01:52

And an INSET day may be the solution for a lot of schools - many won't have announced next year's yet so they could swiftly add one in on the Monday.

If they do that then the teachers will have to be at work.

floraloctopus · 15/06/2019 01:53

^ or do after school training instead.

REDCARBLUE · 15/06/2019 07:52

I just don’t understand why use an existing BH and take it to celebrate something else. I dont think there are enough BH as it it.

If it means so much to the Government to celebrate this event, Provide an extra BH on the Friday and leave the May Day BH as it is.

MsTSwift · 15/06/2019 08:05

Pain for us already booked large group walking trip for the bank hol as we always do asked to change it to new bank holiday weekend but already booked so have to keep booking (deposit paid) so our weekend trip now a day shorter. Not the end of the world but annoying nonetheless

Ski4130 · 15/06/2019 08:26

It’s worked out well for us, it’s my birthday that weekend, and I usually work on a Friday, but not a Monday, so I’ll get a bonus day off. Dd’s School have also got an inset day on May 7th, so we’re taking ds 1 and 2 out of school in the afternoon and heading away for a long birthday weekend away, which we couldn’t have done before.

I do feel awful for people who booked wedding venues/holidays etc based on the original bank holiday date though, that’s so upsetting for them.

Feenie · 15/06/2019 10:39

Around six lots of after school training = one day.

Massive pain in the arse, would rather work the training day.

Butterymuffin · 15/06/2019 10:58

You complaining about how inconvenient the move is for you, despite your involvement in the armed services, just comes across as being incredibly disrespectful.

This, still. And OP if your work diary really is completely full for every working day between now and 8 May 2020, there's something wrong with your working life.

anothernotherone · 15/06/2019 11:28

Randomly moving a bank holiday isn't respectful, it's all show and front on the part of the government. It's weird to tell people to put up and shut up about something costing them money in order to make the government look good.

floraloctopus · 15/06/2019 12:18

Same here Feenie, it'd take up my marking and planning time so I'd end up doing more work at home to make up for it.

FFSeverynameisused · 15/06/2019 12:36

I think my employer will move the bank holiday and it will only inconvenience those who already have holidays / weddings etc booked.

Whatjusthappenedthere · 16/06/2019 21:10

I don’t believe I have been disrespectful at all. This day will be about street parties , flag waving and probably way to much drinking. If it were a day for quiet reflection and remembrance then yes, my post would be disrespectful.
As for a full diary being some kind of reflection that my work life balance is up the creek made me chuckle. I just thought it was because my clients find me good at what I do. Smile

I think a lot of people WILL try to get the Monday off as well, and not everyone is going to be given it are they? Sad

As I said, it would have been a better idea to have the Friday before as an additional bank holiday. I am surprised that they didn't do this tbh.
