Moving the May Bank Holiday. Will this cause you inconvenience?

I work Mondays. I am still paid for the Bank Holidays. I don’t work Fridays. I have already made my holiday arrangements around child care for 2020 and now unless I can take a day off unpaid my plans are now up the creek. Also my job involves a diary of clients that book up almost a year in advance so this will now also need to be sorted.
Not a happy bunny, this should have been announced at least a year in advance for people accommodate. Angry

And I suspect there will be a stampede to take the Monday off in general.

I had no idea. I guess it's 11 months notice 🤷‍♀️

Smelborp · 09/06/2019 10:41

What?!

sweeneytoddsrazor · 09/06/2019 10:42

Well it has been announced almost a year in advance so plenty of time for you to reorganize.

Someaddedsugar · 09/06/2019 10:42

I had no idea about this but it sounds like it’ll be a great commemorative weekend.

Gazelda · 09/06/2019 10:43

It will cause inconvenience - a major work event I manage always takes place on that Bank Holiday Monday.

It I don't mind a bit of inconvenience for an occasion to remember such an important event in our history.

As last week's D Day events reminded us - veterans who served in the war are getting very, very old now and soon won't be around for us to honour.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 09/06/2019 10:43

It is known a year in advance.

No issues here.

WindsweptEgret · 09/06/2019 10:44

Many people work a short day Friday so won't get a full day off. Also it moves the two long weekends closer together. Understand it's significant of course, but it would be nice to just get an extra day off!

FairySunbath · 09/06/2019 10:44

First I've heard about this! Goes off to Google

Badbilly · 09/06/2019 10:45

Are we getting an extra Bank Holiday for VJ Day (15th August)?

BumandChips · 09/06/2019 10:46

As a nurse it makes zero difference to my life.

Whatjusthappenedthere · 09/06/2019 10:46

2020 early May Bank Holiday is being pushed back to the Friday so people can commemorate VE Day. My issue isn’t the reason, it’s the impact on people’s lives. Personally, it has cost me a days pay.

Bloody hurrah i say! The 8th May is my birthday. When i was 18, they made it a bank holiday for the 50th anniversary, so I'm pleased that it will be a holiday for the 75th (and to commemorate my 43rd birthday!!)

icecreamsundae32 · 09/06/2019 10:46

Is this every year or just next year as it's the 75th anniversary? It doesn't bother me in slightest and it is a years notice.

pinegreen · 09/06/2019 10:47

Don’t you get pro-rated public holidays?

Part timers where I work get a proportion of bank holidays paid for relative to their job load, not in full, otherwise it’s incredibly unfair on someone whose set days don’t include Mondays.

soulrider · 09/06/2019 10:47

Scuppers my plans, my 40th birthday was going to coincide with the bank holiday weekend.

Whatjusthappenedthere · 09/06/2019 10:48

Plenty time to reorganise a diary that is already full? Nope.

OP posts:
MRex · 09/06/2019 10:48

Why can you not ask your employer to change the dates @Whatjusthappenedthere? It seems reasonable to at least ask rather than immediately assume there will be a problem.

Stravapalava · 09/06/2019 10:48

No issues here. I work in a 24/7/365 service, working Mondays anyway, whether they are bh or not, don't work Fridays. My DM does childcare for us on Mondays unless DH can get the day off, so we're all good.

SleepingStandingUp · 09/06/2019 10:49

Eh?

You normally work Mondays, would be paid for BH usually so get it off. Now you'll have to work it but won't have any clients booked in. You have 11 months to fill it. Do you mean you now have to sort childcare for this day? You have 12 months to sort it.

You don't work Fridays so have no clients on a Friday. How will it being a BH and thus lots of other people not working affect you? You should get a day off in leui if the BH falls on a non working day.

Book the Monday and get your request in first thing Monday.

SleepingStandingUp · 09/06/2019 10:51

Missed one of your messages.

So you'd normally work the BH and then get paid so it's double time essentially? You should still get paid or a day off for the BH if you're not contracted to work it. Speak to your boss about being paid it as you need the money more than an extra day off

MightyAtlantic · 09/06/2019 10:51

Makes absolutely zero difference to me. It's plenty of notice for most people.

daisypond · 09/06/2019 10:51

I work in a 365 day industry on a rota. We don’t get public holidays or weekends. So it makes no difference to me.

WindsweptEgret · 09/06/2019 10:51

Don’t you get pro-rated public holidays? I mean full time workers who work more hours Monday to Thursday and then a shorter or half day Friday.
