Moving the May Bank Holiday. Will this cause you inconvenience?

I work Mondays. I am still paid for the Bank Holidays. I don’t work Fridays. I have already made my holiday arrangements around child care for 2020 and now unless I can take a day off unpaid my plans are now up the creek. Also my job involves a diary of clients that book up almost a year in advance so this will now also need to be sorted.
Not a happy bunny, this should have been announced at least a year in advance for people accommodate. Angry

Far better to have honoured everyone’s sacrifice correctly by adding a Friday bank holiday day. As is, this is just stolen from the Monday so I’m trying to see how much honouring is going on.

redspider1 · 09/06/2019 11:33

Quite a lot of notice I think.
Quite like a Friday off.

Clutterbugsmum · 09/06/2019 11:33

I really don't understand the issue. You get paid for bank holidays, whatever day of the week it falls one. You have 11 months to sort any issues out that 'may occur'.

ScreamingValenta · 09/06/2019 11:33

I object to this as it's high-handed - assuming everyone will want to join in with a huge commemorative party. If that's what the government wants, they should declare an extra holiday, not a movement of the existing one.

I say this as someone who works Mon - Fri - so, it will make no difference to me - but I object to the principle.

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 09/06/2019 11:35

I will gain from this, in a minor way. I don't work Mondays, so never feel the benefit of Bank Holidays that are (usually) on Mondays. All my colleagues get the day off. For me, it's a normal working week. In 2020, however, FINALLY, I will benefit, although I will have to suffer in silence all those same colleagues who don't work Fridays, moaning! Grin

Clutterbugsmum · 09/06/2019 11:35

Unless you make calendars in which case it may cause some issues as you now to reprint with the date change.

Andcake · 09/06/2019 11:36

An extra bank holiday would have been more of a honour. First I heard about it was a local event posting about having to change their plans. I be there are lots of volunteers who do great community events to raise funds worried this morning. We should have got both!

Starburst8 · 09/06/2019 11:36

@BlueThesaurusRex can't find your original comment but have seen people's replies.
Your holiday will be pro rata for the days you work. So even though you don't work Mondays you will get the right amount of holiday for the 4days you work.
You can go to google and search for HMRC holiday calculator and that will tell you how many hours holiday you should get for the year 😀

DippyAvocado · 09/06/2019 11:36

I'm a part-time worker who doesn't work Mondays so I'm delighted. I never usually get the day off for a bank holiday, just work my usual 4 days alongside all the people who had a paid holiday. Not all part-time workers have Fridays as their day off.

m0therofdragons · 09/06/2019 11:37

I hope they don't add another bank holiday. We may get a day off but working in an acute hospital it just means gps are shut so A&E ends up bonkers and it's more work when I come back in.

Overall, you can never please everyone and some will benefit and others will lose out. Over a lifetime it probably evens out and isn't really comparable to the sacrifice those gave 75 years ago. Bet they wish their only struggle was the nightmare of organising childcare instead of fighting a war. Maybe a little perspective if needed.

Deafdonkey · 09/06/2019 11:37

It's really bad for me, I thought you were joking. We have our annual village fete on this Monday, all the big things have been booked and deposits have been paid. These are things that get booked up years in advance and they will be already booked for the Friday. I think we should have had an extra day.

daisychain01 · 09/06/2019 11:38

2020 early May Bank Holiday is being pushed back to the Friday so people can commemorate VE Day. My issue isn’t the reason, it’s the impact on people’s lives. Personally, it has cost me a days pay.

Has it completely past you by that the reason to commemorate VE Day is to pay tribute to the millions of people who lost their lives, gave the ultimate sacrifice for no thanks? I don't suppose they gave a flying 4x about a day's pay,!

And you're moaning about your inconvenience. I absolutely despair.

And just for content. We are not a disrespectful family when it comes to these things. DH came home only yesterday from France having visited for the D Day celebrations , I’m ex military . I do get the reason. It’s the notice that’s thrown me out. No it’s not the governments fault that the date is where it is but they could have announced this much sooner.

This is the Friday before SATs week - could affect Y6 children who will go away for the weekend because of the extra day and have a few late nights where they wouldn't normally.

However, the NEU are voting to boycott atm, so fingers crossed....

Whatjusthappenedthere · 09/06/2019 11:44

No need daisy chain. You know nothing about me, you are way off the mark. I come from a family who made sacrifices in more than just WW2 but more recent conflicts too and these are not forgotten. I also served on HM ships in the RN.

Maybe it hit a raw nerve OP because I volunteer for SSAFA so it's knowing how little we have to 'put up with' in reality in this day and age, compared to the veterans and people who lost their lives or came away destroyed by the effects of ww1+2, it's depressing!

So that said, I hope you get it sorted x

Mintychoc1 · 09/06/2019 11:47

I don’t work Fridays, so I’ll basically lose a bank holiday Monday that I would usually have. I’m a bit disappointed but I can understand the reason, so I’ve just accepted it.

Best comment of the thread.

AlexaAmbidextra · 09/06/2019 11:49

It would be more if an inconvenience to you if you, or any of your family, were sent to war and maybe didn’t come back. Have some respect.

Precisely. Well said.

freshstartnewme · 09/06/2019 11:50

It's like a year away. How much sooner did you want them to tell you Grin

LemonTT · 09/06/2019 11:51

Well you can’t please all of the people all of the time.

People died so we have the luxury at being upset at the thought of taking a days leave. Plus we have the right to moan about it in public. What a wonderful world they created. A country fit for entitled moaners.

Heratnumber7 · 09/06/2019 11:52

I have already made my holiday arrangements around child care for 2020

Congratulations on being so well organised.
Now you'll have to change your plans a little, just like the families of all those people who died in the war did.

BlueThesaurusRex · 09/06/2019 11:53

@starburst8 I’ve used the calculator and it matches my leave entitlement but my full time colleagues get twice the leave I receive plus bank holidays! If I worked Monday-wed I would receive the time I get plus bank Hols- think I should change my days?

Whatjusthappenedthere · 09/06/2019 11:54

Great Uncle lost his life Normandy.
Brother served and saw action in Falklands
Father decorated for service.
Grandad came back from Casino.
I am not complaining about the motive. I said from the start I get it. Look at the title? It’s about the short notice not the reason.
I know this is AIBU but honestly ?

Affects me too, I’ll lose a day off that year but there’s nothing we can do so I’ll just suck it up.
