Sage and Saffron are fine. But it depends where you are too....you could get away with most of them in Queen's Park/Primrose Hill. Not so much in Stockport!

Saga is not considered an unusual name in the Nordics. So for me it sounds normal.

I think I'd associate phoenix with a boy. But there are few Bears around.

AIBU to ask why these days we use ridiculous names for our children but use human names for our pets ?

Jarnsaxa · 09/06/2019 16:27

Don't call your kid Loki
In actual Norse Mythology, Loki is not a, sexy, naughty, Lucifer type dude. He's a slimy, cowardly arse hole.
it would be like calling your kid nobhead or something.

CharDeeMacDennis · 09/06/2019 16:30

My 14yo daughter looked over my shoulder and says she wouldn't mind being called Indigo, Saffron, Lilac or Misty. She didn't like any of the others. She expressed the most horror at the thought of being called Hendrix Grin

Troels · 09/06/2019 16:32

Friend has a teen girl called Sage, so it sounds fine to me. She's lovely.
We have a pet called Loki, he's the god of mischief, not use I'd land a kid with that one.

Love BUZZ and INDIGO

1moremum · 09/06/2019 16:58

A lot of them would make better nicknames than given names, IMO.

My dad hates diminutive names, so gave us names that mostly could not be shortened as they were so short already. He then called us by goofy nicknames instead. Our partners who are called by diminutives of their given name, he calls buy their given name except for the one it bothered enough that she told him to stop. so he did.

I have a boy with the Beatle last name. He was the only one born here in that year, it’s hugely uncommon. I don’t like it for a girl at all.

sadeyedladyofthelowlands63 · 09/06/2019 18:08

I've taught a Lennon, a Hendrix and at least 3 Saffrons.

Boys:
Buzz - Reminds me of Toy Story. Don't really like.
Atlas - No, don't like it
Aries - I like the name but think it would sound silly on a child.
Bear - Dislike, except as a nickname
Pluto - Dislike
Loki - I like the name but worth considering it's connotations
Basil - Quirky, not for me. Fawlty Towers

Girls:
Echo - Nice
Lava - Nice sounding word but no
Saga - No
Phoenix - Beautiful and lovely connotations
Eartha - Bit torn as it's a pretty name but also a bit dated
Indigo - Dislike as I actually have this common, as is Indi
Lyric - Pretty
Sage - Cute
Lux - Love it, means light in Latin and is the name of a character from Virgin Suicides book/film
Saffron - Pretty but wouldn't use personally
Lennon - No
Lilac - Okay
Hendrix - No
Fawn - Beautiful
Misty - Reminds me of Pokémon and also a stripper name, but I like it
Story - Unsure on this one, bit pretentious, could work on the right person

All absolutely awful

Ravenclawclassof84 · 14/06/2019 07:22

I love Indigo. I wouldn't be able to say Basil in anything other than a Sybil Fawlty voice unfortunately!

Vittoriosa · 14/06/2019 07:23

I think Fawn is quite nice/acceptable?

origamiunicorn · 14/06/2019 07:24

Lava?! What about Magma! Grin
