I've got a cat called Basil. Think it's a great name for a cat

fleshmarketclose · 08/06/2019 17:41

I know of a Story Hmm her brother is Dustin. Not keen of any of the names.

Jebuschristchocolatebar · 08/06/2019 17:42

@BottleOfJameson you are thinking of basil brush

Iputthescrewinthetuna · 08/06/2019 17:42

I have a DD called Phoenix.

Jellycat1 · 08/06/2019 17:44

Lux is awesome. We had it picked out as one of only two girls' names upon which we could agree! Had 2 boys but I'm pretty sure we'd have gone with it.

Twillow · 08/06/2019 17:45

Just what they say to me on first impressions

Boys:
Buzz - American/Disney
Atlas - greek god. Jokes about holding things up.
Aries - star sign
Bear - becoming more common
Pluto - dog
Loki - Norse God but not sure if goodie or baddie
Basil - No. Basil Fawlty. Plant.

Girls:
Echo - Foxtrot
Lava - No.
Saga - No.
Phoenix - I like it but isn't it a 'boy's' name?
Eartha - quite nice in a hippy kind of way
Indigo - Nice but also common for dogs.
Lyric - What?
Sage - ok ish
Lux - Washing powder (or was it soap?)
Saffron - common in a hippy way
Lennon - this I quite like, but surely boys name if anything?
Lilac - okish
Hendrix - No. Only for Jimi.
Fawn - God no.
Misty - Porn star?
Story - You what?

Dieu · 08/06/2019 17:46

Awful, just awful. Saffron is the only forgivable name. Sorry!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 08/06/2019 17:48

Basil the rat is the final Fawlty Towers episode. Manuel has a pet rat he calls Basil. Oddly enough, Basil is the only name on that list I could consider using for a boy, in spite of the Fawlty Towers association.

Lava - why would you want to call a child that? Hardly positive associations.

Story, Saga, Lyric - I just don't get the idea of using these as given names at all. Is it inspired by Atlas? What next? Tragedy, Comedy, Farce, Musical, Epic, Ode, Sonnet, Tale, Fable, Encyclopaedia ...

Lennon and Dylan - why are these female names? The most famous bearers of these surnames were/are male, and Dylan is a very longstanding Welsh first name for boys, e.g. Dylan Thomas.

Phoenix is not always spelled right. That would drive me up the wall.

I suppose Lilac's all right. I don't greatly take to Saffron and Sage but wouldn't find them nearly as unusual as most of the rest.

user01763 · 08/06/2019 17:49

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g where has Dylan come from? Confused

OP posts:
Seeline · 08/06/2019 17:50

Saga - holidays for old people

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 08/06/2019 17:50

My fevered imagination, User! Sorry. Read Hendrix and somehow that got translated into Dylan.

Icantreachthepretzels · 08/06/2019 17:51

Basil just makes me think of Basil fawlty (and for some reason some kind of mouse/rat but I can't remember why)

Basil the great mouse detective?

Some of these names are perfectly useable - others less so. But then I'm currently loving the name Cedric so am in no position to talk.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 08/06/2019 17:53

Icantreachthepretzels
The Nissan Cedric - now that was a car Grin

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 08/06/2019 17:54

Saffron is a nice name, and Basil is...a name (I'm actually not sure why I don't like it). The rest are not usable IMO.

ChodeofChodeHall · 08/06/2019 17:55

Many of your names are lovely. Please don't call your daughter Hendrix

Bezalelle · 08/06/2019 17:55

"Just going for an Eartha..." - Jim Royle

Basil

Girls:
Echo

Phoenix
Eartha
Indigo

Sage
Lux
Saffron
Lennon
Lilac
Hendrix
Fawn

Buzz is a nickname, not a real name. Bear is often used as a diminutive of Edward (logic is Teddy bear I think). Basil is a really old school name. I have heard Loki before, can’t remember where. Atlas is becoming more common I think... no idea why. Pluto and Aries are ok for pets Grin.

Girls wise Sage is a name but usually used for boys ime. I have met a Saffron, I believe we went to secondary school together so that’s not a new name. Lennon and Hendrix are along the same lines of Bowie- people trying to be cool basically, they’re just surnames. Eartha = Eartha Kitt, old name. Phoenix was briefly popular in the noughties. The others sound ridiculous.

ChodeofChodeHall · 08/06/2019 17:57

I really love Fawn. How about Fauna?

Rainbowknickers · 08/06/2019 17:58

My daughter wants to call her 1st born Luna which is sweeter than lava

Whatsername7 · 08/06/2019 17:58

I teach a Saffron and love the name because I love the kid. Also taught a Sage and an Indy (I know you said Indigo but I love the same Indy). Not really keen on the suggestions for boys. I love the name Loki, but that is my cats name.

GhostIsAGoodBoi · 08/06/2019 17:59

I know a boy called Lux. And Atlas is my #1 for a boy however I’m not having any more DC and I’ve had all girls Grin

grumpyyetgorgeous · 08/06/2019 18:02

I like Loki and Basil, both would be cute and not too out there.
For the girls I like quite a few:
Echo
Indigo
Lyric
Saffron
Lilac
Misty

Also, I've taught several boys called Lennon it's not all that unusual here. Never heard it used for a girl though.

steff13 · 08/06/2019 18:03

Misty was a common name in the 70s. Buzz Aldrin was of course one of the first men to walk on the moon. His real name was Edwin, so I get why he went by Buzz.

Basil makes me think of Basil Rathbone, excellent association. Fawn makes me think is Fawn Hall, not a great association.

Icantreachthepretzels · 08/06/2019 18:06

The Nissan Cedric - now that was a car

Oh crap - I didn't know it was a car! Grin

Still - people on here say they like 'Allegra' and 'Nova' as girls' names and they're definitely cars.

helpmum2003 · 08/06/2019 18:08

Basil, Saffron and Lilac. Those 3 are lovely.
