I know a Basil, and an indigo

spanieleyes · 08/06/2019 18:10

I lnow a Lyric-it quite suits her.

The rest, no!

reluctantbrit · 08/06/2019 18:10

Having a “normal” but unusual name myself I would think twice before doing this with my child. I remember the teasing, misspelling, standing out.

DD has a name I haven’t come across since her birth for a child, you can be going away from the top 20 without being at the other end of the spectrum.

zeeboo · 08/06/2019 18:11

I have a 50 something aged friend called Sage and an ex friend had a dad called Echo who would be in her mid teens by now.

AphidEater · 08/06/2019 18:12

Lava 😂😂😂

NoonAim · 08/06/2019 18:13

They're pretty weird unusual names OP! It depends on where you live. I expect some of them are popular in London or New York but unheard of in eg Forfar or Daventry Wink

Excited101 · 08/06/2019 18:14

Dear god the vast majority of those are hideous!

Naming your child something ’unusal’ is placing a lot of pressure on that child to be confident, cool, outgoing and resilient. Life is hard enough, why make it more difficult? I struggle to see any benefit for a child with a name like those.

Juniperjunojunijune · 08/06/2019 18:15

Atlas is cool!

I also really like Lilac, Sage, Saffron and Lux.

Bear is getting pretty common, weirdly, and I also know 2 baby Indigos.

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 08/06/2019 18:17

Boys:
Buzz- No, Buzzlight year
Atlas- Yes

Bear- Maybe as a middle name
Pluto- No, cartoon dog
Loki- No, Evil spirit
Basil- No, Faulty Towers

Girls:
Echo- Maybe as a middle name
Lava- Maybe as a middle name
Saga- No, sonic the hedgehog
Phoenix- Yes
Eartha- Maybe as a middle name
Indigo- Yes
Lyric- Yes
Sage- Yes
Lux- Maybe as a middle name
Saffron- Yes
Lennon- No, but yes for a boy
Lilac- Yes

INeedAFlerken · 08/06/2019 18:18

I've met Indigos, and I know a baby Loki.

Katinski · 08/06/2019 18:19

The 'Buzz' in Buzz Aldrin (the astronaut) is actually Edwin, btw.
Buzz is a bit daft,Edwin not much better, I reckon.

MamaLazarou · 08/06/2019 18:20

Bear is a wildly (and inexplicably) popular name for dogs in my corner of Leafy South-West London.

Wendalicious · 08/06/2019 18:21

My new nephew is Phoenix, wasn’t sure at first but now love it x

AhhhHereItGoes · 08/06/2019 18:22

If use Loki perhaps.

Indigo or Misty fine for a girl.

Teaandchocolatecake · 08/06/2019 18:24

None of them are the sort of names I like, although I don’t mind Saffron.

Lux was a brand of soap, don’t know if it still is.

Eartha is a poo in rhyming slang! Eartha (Kitt) = a shit. Wouldn’t use it for that reason alone!

CanILeavenowplease · 08/06/2019 18:27

I like Indigo.

Saffron, Basil, ..perhaps.

The others, not so much. I would particularly avoid Saga (old people’s insurance?!), Lux, Lava and Story.

Lunde · 08/06/2019 18:28

Boys:
Buzz - no
Atlas - possible
Aries - possible
Bear - pretty common Anglicism of Scandi names like Björn
Pluto - no, no, no - absolutely not
Loki - Another Scandi Anglicism of Loke (pronounced Lok-e)
Basil - Brush?

Girls:
Echo - no - very American
Lava - possible
Saga - Like it Scandi for Story
Phoenix - possible
Eartha - no
Indigo - possible
Lyric - no
Sage - possible
Lux - no - will get mistaken for soap
Saffron - like it
Lennon - better for a boy
Lilac like it
Hendrix - better for a boy
Fawn - no
Misty - very 70s
Story - Anglicized version of Saga

CountFosco · 08/06/2019 18:29

Buzz - NN
Atlas - unusual but OK
Aries - Ram
Bear - I know this is popular among a certain demographic but I think it's a cute NN but not a great name
Pluto - think most people would think of the Disney dog
Loki - The troublesome Norse God
Basil - Fawlty or the dog from The Herb Garden. Proper name though, could be popular so check. Doesn't really fit with the other names here.

Girls:
Echo - we had a cat called this when we were pretentious teens. Everyone said 'What, like the soap?' I think the myth reference is rather sad as well for a child. I do think it's pretty though
Lava - Just no
Saga - not keen
Phoenix - this is a boys name surely?
Eartha - Makes me think of Eartha Kitt. My favourite in your list
Indigo - hipster boys name
Lyric - Another no
Sage - Don't mind but more for a boy I'd have thought
Lux - Soap
Saffron - this is a pretty and popular name
Lennon - well established boys name
Lilac - pretty
Hendrix - not as good as Lennon
Fawn - Don't mind
Misty - slightly American and more a NN I'd have thought
Story - No

youarenotkiddingme · 08/06/2019 18:31

Bear is often used as a nn for Edward. As in Edward = teddy = bear.

The others aren't horrendous.

Lilac is lovely and never heard of it before.
Know a Phoenix who's a boy.
Know Lennon who's a boy and a Saffron (girl).
I knew a Fawn when I was growing up. I think for the 80's it was an out there name. Not so much in 2019!

Fr3d · 08/06/2019 18:32

I know a couple of Basil's, one would be in his 50's, one in his 30's. Wouldn't chose it myself.

Also know a Loki but he's German if that makes a difference

FudgeBrownie2019 · 08/06/2019 18:32

I know a Bear, a Saffron, an Echo and a Basil. All lovely names. All useable.

When I was growing up names were very 80's, so lots of Amy's, Marks, Davids, Richards, Louises and Catherines. I teach Reception now and the names of the children we have in are gorgeous; there are rarely more than one of the same each year because parents seem to be much more creative with names. I love it.

youarenotkiddingme · 08/06/2019 18:37

Love Luna mentioned above.

Loved it since I started reading HP many moons ago.

Bambamber · 08/06/2019 18:41

I personally think they're all a bit shit.

But then you would probably find the sorts of names that I like rather boring and shit.

It's all a matter of taste, we all like different things. Name your kids what you like, it doesn't really matter what other people think. And as unusual names are becoming more popular, by the time they're older they won't seem that unusual at all

TurquoiseAndPurple · 08/06/2019 18:42

I know a little girl and a guy names Story. The guy is related to an extremely famous author and has the same surname as said author so he really suits it. The little girls suits it loads too! I think it's a gorgeous name 😁

TurquoiseAndPurple · 08/06/2019 18:43

Oh and there was a girl named Lava on the new block busters the other week. I was used to it after 5 mins.
