crummyusername · 07/06/2019 22:43

I can’t remember what I go upstairs for half the time but these are burned into my brain forever

To be a pilgriiiiim! (How did that one start again?)

Cross Over the Road my friend
Ask the lord his strength to lend
His compassion has no end!
Cross over the rooooooad

When a knight won his Spurs was a classic

Sparadrap · 07/06/2019 22:43

So light up the fire and let the flame burn
Wuuuuuopen the door let Jesus return

Ingrained in my brain for all eternity Grin

DuggeesWoggle · 07/06/2019 22:44

Yes Withington and finished with a loud Jewish 'hey!/oi!' at the end. Loads of fun to sing in our otherwise quite full church.

BurntSausage · 07/06/2019 22:44

FROM THE TINY ANT! Squeeeeee! Each one is like peeling back the years 🤣

Sharkattack2 · 07/06/2019 22:45

I remember we had a new set of school song books in our primary school in the early 80’s. It was a white book with a colourful tree or pattern on the front but the songs were so very different. We were a small, Welsh (but primarily Christian) primary school so we sang welsh hymns alongside our traditional school songs (onward Christian soldiers, morning has broken etc) but this books gave us so many more songs - little boxes, ticky tacky everywhere and even Jewish songs - shalom alekem. Such an eye opener to have all new songs and they were so different. Wish I knew what that book was, I loved singing the songs from that.

londonrach · 07/06/2019 22:45

@revel yes....theres soo many great songs. Be over 20 years since ive heard any. I might go to church if they sang these songs just to sing them. Please keep posting song names and like others its bringing memories back.

Tolleshunt · 07/06/2019 22:45

Crummy I love that too! I refer you to my text of 22.29, it started:

"Heeee who would valiant be,
'Gainst all dis-aarrrr-ster"

kateandme · 07/06/2019 22:45

and when one year started and then another and another so sing in a round.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 07/06/2019 22:46

"Jet planes meeting in the air to be refuelled"

All these things I love so well, so I mustn't forget, no I mustn't forget...

Love it! We used to sing all of these - our Come and Praise books were blue with faces on the front.

HariboLectar · 07/06/2019 22:46

We never sang the Autumn Days song at either of my primary schools. The first time I heard it was at a wedding a few years back.
I feel like I've missed out on something Envy

QueenietheCutie · 07/06/2019 22:47

Oh my goodness what excellent memories this thread brings back! Loved these songs and how important we felt if we were allowed to work the tape player (!!) in assembly for the musical accompaniment!

MrsSiba · 07/06/2019 22:47

@fuckbrussel. Thank you for reminding me of that one, another favourite. How is it that I can remember the lyrics perfectly after all these years but not remember more recent things,?

Bunnylady53 · 07/06/2019 22:48

As we used to sing “ Lord of the dance settee” lol 😂

EyeDrops · 07/06/2019 22:48

Autumn Days makes me so weepy, I love it! Love all of these!!

Don't know if it was in Come and Praise, but...

Love is like a penny if you give it awaaaay
Leeeeend it, spend it and you'll have so many, they'll roll all over the flooooor....

Sewrainbow · 07/06/2019 22:49

Think of a world without any flowers... And the cold and naked one used to make me sad Sad

My favourites were when a knight won his spurs and milk bottle tops...

Does anyone remember a Christmas duet n starting "philip awake I pray, why awaken me" I remember the tune but only those two lines, I'd love to hear the rest again or at least read the words but have never found it.

Geraniumpink · 07/06/2019 22:49

You may be cheered to know they sing all those songs (and more! ) at primary schools round my way.

American here. did y'all really sing a religious song based on a tune by Chicago? (or did I just never know the lyrics properly to that song by Chicago? )

fromthefloorboardsup · 07/06/2019 22:49

I'm an atheist now but went to a CofE Primary School and I loved these songs. So many happy memories, I needed this today, thank you!

StrumpersPlunkett · 07/06/2019 22:50

Come and praise one of the best song books in the world!!

FurryTurnipHead · 07/06/2019 22:50

Dockray I did a charity long distance walk a few years ago, and before we all set off, the walkers all gathered in the church yard, and the vicar led a rousing rendition of 'one more step' to bless our feet! Everyone joined in. I'm a cynical old atheist but it brought a tear to my eye!

Can't believe we haven't had a bit of Kumbyah my Lord kimbyah 🎼🎼🎵🎵🎶
