And our parish church vicar said that "one more step along the world I go" was written for some children moving up to secondary school.

So many I recognise here from junior school in the 90s! Reaching year 3 and finally being responsible enough to hold a hymn book and see the proper lyrics. We originally had tatty blue "Come and Praise" copies and then I think we got newer ones with red/purple/stained glass pattern covers and red backs when I was in year 6? I have a "Sing Together" edit Pretty sure I still have one at my parents home. We had a bigger hard backed collection in the seniors, it was white with colourful outlined of happy people on it- "Salvation" maybe? We each had a copy to keep and in yr 9 we all got an official school hymn book, which I still have and I also have a school hymn book from the high Anglican school I went to for vi form. They replaced them at the end of LVI and we were invited to keep them- as a choirister I did! Also to answer a Pp- we had "ta-ra-ra boom-de-ay" books! Best music lessons ever just being allowed to sing! Happy memories of "Jamaica Farewell", "When I'm 64" etc. I think we had a similar book with a sunny island on a blue back ground on the cover, too.

I spent my teaching career in infants and as the school pianist have fond memories of Come and Praise!

Beetroot purple and onions white, all grow steadily day and night...
The apples are ripe, the plums are red, the broad beans are sleeping in their blanket-y beds... 🎶🎶

God yes, I had a primary school teacher who would play acoustic guitar and teach us to sing 'Streets of London' and 'Lily the Pink'. I always thought he was a maverick, but it sounds like it was practically a national curriculum Grin

He also taught us 'Country Roads' by (I think?) John Denver, 'Blowin' in the Wind' by Bob Dylan and 'Both Sides Now' by Joni Mitchell. I never liked 'Blowin' in the Wind' but still
adore the others to this day, and I know all the words off by heart.

Thats Cauliflowers fluffy, school life was so " seasonal", we used to start learning that song straightaway in September, ready for Harvest festival.

A couple I remember from "Come and Praise" but haven't seen on here yet:

"Somebody Greater Than You or Me" - Carpenter, carpenter make me a tree/that's the work of somebody far greater than me,
Gardener, gardener make me a flower/ that's the work of somebody with far greater power.
I loved that one!

We also had "love will never come to an end", "I am planting my feet in the footsteps", "You can build a wall around you" - which was inspired by the Selfish Giant story, and "The Bell of Creation". The bell one was a real class favourite, I remember us choosing it as our "last hymn" in year 6- "Ring Bell, over the land/Ring bell, under the sea/The bell of creation is ringing forever/and all of the time, it is ringing in ME". I found it creepy!

In seniors we had a lot of "All Earth was dark, until You spoke", which was beautiful and a school favourite. We got a newer, happier clappier music master in year 9 who played a lot of Shine Jesus Shine" and "At the name of Jesus", both nice hymns but so done to death. I was quite relieved in UVI when the incoming chaplain banned "Shine Jesus Shine"! We had a loud, robust music master at that school, too. We had congregational practice on Saturday mornings, too get us ready for Sunday church and it was vigorous! I used to sit infront of the tenor & bass section in the choir and hearing them belt out "The battle hymn of the republic" was a great wake up!

Glad that I live am I,
That the sky is blue.
Glad for the country lanes
And the fall of dew.
After the sun, the rain,
After the rain, the sun.
This is the way of life,
Till the work be done.

This thread is fab, it's made my day. I've cried, I've laughed, I've remembered. Just marvellous. Thank you all.
😁😁

The entire cd/cassette sides are up on YouTube complete with time listings for C&P 1 and 2- you can guess what I've been listening to this afternoon!

ChopinIn10Minuets · 10/06/2019 15:30

I remember 'Sing Hosanna, sing Hosanna, sing Hosanna to the King of kings, Sing Hosanna, sing Hosanna, sing Hosanna to the King of ' Blush

There was always one... Grin

ChocOrCheese · 10/06/2019 15:45

We had one - can't remember the words but the chorus went:

Father, gladly we greet you
Father, coming to meet you

And the teacher was always scolding us for pronouncing the last two words sloppily so it sounded like "meat chew". I have no idea why she got so annoyed about it.

flyingspaghettimonster · 10/06/2019 16:03

Did anyone sing one about Bigfoot?

Sometimes running, sometimes walking, never stopping always stalking Bigfoot, bigfoot, bigfoot country. Always doomed to be behind him, wonder if I'll ever find him, Bigfoot, bigfoot, bigfoot country...

PopWentTheWeasel · 10/06/2019 16:08

Does this book have "give me oil in my lamp keep me burning" in it? My son was singing it the other day as I kept singing it to him at bed time. I love so many of the hymns people have listed on here. tempted to buy herself a copy

DoveOfPiss · 10/06/2019 17:15

Just thought of one that isn't on there but we used to sing:

'There is a green hill far away
Without a city wall
Where our dear Lord was crucified
He died to save us all'

I'm assuming this is an Easter hymn - does anyone know what it's called please? And where I can listen?

Babblepook · 10/06/2019 17:39

Didn’t it also have Ben by Michael Jackson in it too?

Passtherioja · 10/06/2019 18:10

@Babblepook ...not sure he's allowed anymore....

Hadjab · 10/06/2019 18:34

Best thread ever ❤️

Hadjab · 10/06/2019 18:35

@DoveofPiss

It’s called There is a green Hill

DoveOfPiss · 10/06/2019 18:53

@Hadjab haha thanks. Wondered if it would be something obvious...

JaceLancs · 10/06/2019 18:55

Another one I’ve just remembered
‘When I needed a neighbour - were you there?”
Can anyone remember the one about a hobo? It was when I was at high school so 1975-80 ish

tobee · 10/06/2019 18:57

Clawdy I'd forgotten that one!

Glad that I live am I

That used to make me feel really down and worried about death. Shock The tune!

tobee · 10/06/2019 19:00

flying that Bigfoot one is very weird. ConfusedDon't know it. Doesn't sound very like a hymn. Are you from the Himalayas? Grin

Genderwitched · 10/06/2019 19:20

Clawdy

Jesus bids us shine with a pure clear light
Like a little candle burning in the night
In this world of darkness we will shine
You in your small corner, and I in mine.

This made me teary, where have all the years gone?

flyingspaghettimonster · 10/06/2019 19:50

Tobee lol, I went to deBohun primary in north London. Our school was never dull... with a wide mix of ethnicities and religions we spent as mu h time learning about Diwali and Eid as we did Christian celebrations. And one entire year we uad this teacher who was obsessed with Tracy Chapman... she had us sit for an hour a day in the beanbag corner just to listen to the album... we wrote about the song lyrics for all writing assignments and studied them in such detail I would go to bed at night crying about 'why do the babies cry, when there's enough food to feed the world'... looking back, rhe album was released in 1988 so she must just have got it and wanted to listen to it all the time.:D
