Oh yes to God’s Spirit is in My Heart, that was ace “this is what I have to doooooooo what I have to dooooooo!”

I went to a tiny little RC primary school and we did a LOT of singing. We all used to snigger horribly at the music teacher who used to get all operatic and belt out hymns as though she was a lead soprano at the Albert Hall.

I particularly liked Walk in The Night -

🎵”WALK!!!! In the niiiiight, WAAAARORRRORRRRORRRALK in the night, walk in the night WALK IN THE LIGHT OF THE LORD!!!”🎵

We still sing it at church complete with a tambourine. Non catholic DH rolls his eyes while I happily warble along.

We also sang All Things Bright and Beautiful but unfortunately the line “The purple headed mountain” took on a whole new meaning when we were teenagers........Grin

Does anyone remember the Allan Alberg poem from Please Mrs Butler poem book which parodied When a Knight One his Spurs:

The Headmasters Hymn
When a knight won his spurs in the stories of old,
He was – ‘Face the front, David Briggs, what have you been told?’
With a shield on his arm and a lance in his – ‘Hey!
Is that a ball I can see? Put – it – a – way.’

No charger have I and – ‘No talking back there.
You’re supposed to be singing, not combing your hair.’
Though back into storyland Giants have – ‘Roy,
this isn’t the playground, stop pushing that boy!’

Let faith be my shield and – ‘Who’s eating sweets here?
I’m ashamed of you Marion, it’s not like you dear.’
And let me set free with – ‘Please stop that Paul King.
This is no place for whistlers, we’d rather you sing!’

One more step into the world i go was sung by ds and his nursery friends at their "graduation" before primary last year.I was in bits.

You can’t beat a good hymn. After my dad passed away, the priest left us with a hymn book so we could choose hymns for the funeral......it certainly cheered us up for the rest of the night whilst we had a sing along to all ours and his favourites!!

DoveOfPiss · 11/06/2019 14:16

I've just remembered another one:

OhJesusIhaveprommmmisssssssed (this bit was really fast and used to make the music teacher wobble her head)
To love thee to the end
Be thou forever near me
My master and my friend
I will not fear the battle
If thou art by my side
Nor wander from the pathway
If thou wilt be my guide
GrinGrinGrin

It's not in come and praise though.

I know Oh Jesus I Have Promised. We sang it to that really staccato tune. Everyone else I know sang it to a boring and sensible tune. The staccato version is more fun

tobee · 11/06/2019 17:46

Fun version

itsmesoitis · 11/06/2019 21:51

I may never march with infantry,
Ride with the calvary
Shoot with the artillery,
I may never zoom o'er the enemy
But I'm in the Lord's Army. Yes Sir!

Complete with actions!

CharlotteCollinsneeLucas · 11/06/2019 22:46

Zoom o'er the enemy! That's it! Great song.

CharlotteCollinsneeLucas · 11/06/2019 22:55

I've just enjoyed that hymn/video and now I'll have it going round my head as I go to bed. Lovely. That was my favourite tune for it, too.

JaceLancs · 11/06/2019 23:44
Thanks for helping me find this - this was the actual book I had and now have the lyrics too, to the workers carol
Clawdy · 12/06/2019 11:04

I remember singing O Jesus I Have Promised, and everyone turning and grinning at a girl called Julie, when we sang "My hope to follow duly....."

I know this thread is quiet now but we all need to vote for our favourite hymn on the BBC website, lots of our favourites there.
