There aren’t really words to describe how sickened I am by this. In the city I’m proud to live in, in the middle of fucking Pride month, two women have been beaten up because they didn’t want to put on a show for some disgusting men.

This is an awful homophobic hate-crime and so sad to hear this is on the rise, as are most hate-crimes. I'm surprised there no CCTV footage though - London buses usually have really good quality footage. I hope they catch the bastards.

MorondelaFrontera · 07/06/2019 17:24

LonginesPrime
you are probably right, it's odd.

Don't get me wrong, you shouldn't have to live like that.
I do find things going backwards in our society very worrying I have to say.

peachgreen · 07/06/2019 17:25

PPs have explained it perfectly. There's a difference between platonic arm-holding and behaving as a couple (and yes, I do show affection in public, despite being older than 12!).

ACertainRation · 07/06/2019 17:26

Second rule of misogyny. Women saying no to men is a hate crime.

Buster72 · 07/06/2019 17:28

I am pleased to hear arrest have been made

geekone · 07/06/2019 17:29

This disgusted me when I read it today.

@peachgreen I agree fully it is a homophobic hate crime it is not the same as other misogynistic attacks other than the fact that it wouldn’t happen in the same way to a man. However we shouldn’t forget that homophobia is largely caused my the patriarchy and misogyny even if perpetrated by women.
@LonginesPrime that article is just disgusting, how can that even be a thing today.

SimonJT · 07/06/2019 17:36

Sadly as a gay person living in London it doesn’t surprise, I have been in five fights in my whole life, all were defending myself/partner due to a homophobic attack.

I hear so many people insisting that there is no longer a need for gay clubs etc, yet ignore the fact that you are at genuine risk of harm if you dare be yourself in public

OutInTheCountry · 07/06/2019 17:37

Good news - they've made arrests though investigations are ongoing.

U2HasTheEdge · 07/06/2019 17:43

The first comment I read about this on FB was someone saying 'I bet their mum's are proud to have dragged them up' or something on the lines.

Always the mum's fault hey!

I am not 12!

Neither am I, but I would quite likely hold my husband's hand on the bus or give off body language that makes it clear we are in an intimate relationship.

Bloody disgusting 'men'. I want to convince myself that homophobia is rare now, but yet, every time my gay son goes out I bloody worry.

icanhearapindrop · 07/06/2019 17:46

Thank god they’ve made arrests. That photo of them all bloody is heartbreaking, you can see how shaken they are, particularly the blonde lady. It’s absolutely despicable and I sincerely hope these men get the book thrown at them.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 07/06/2019 17:52

U2

Same here

When we first met ds1 boyfriend we ended up walking behind them through a shopping centre and they held hands

And i thought if anyone starts anything with my child I won’t be responsible for my actions

Turns out dh was thinking the same thing Grin

NotACleverName · 07/06/2019 17:57

“It’s 2019, why do we still need Pride?” - complete bell ends.

This. This is why we still need Pride, ffs.

MoGgivemestrength · 07/06/2019 17:58

It’s sadly all too commonplace despite our supposed non bigoted society of today. I live in a small town in the south east and when I’m out with my partner we regularly get shouted abuse from passing cars, usually the shouters are young men. I’ve also come back to my car in a public car park to find homophobic slurs written on it. Guess I don’t wash it often enough.
We don’t report the shouts from cars as it happens too often and usually to fast to gather any useful information but I have reported the writing on my car. Can’t wait until I change it and at least for a short while it will be one less worry when parking.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 07/06/2019 18:03

Its horrendous

I do hope the two ladies are ok and have a lot of support

nocoolnamesleft · 07/06/2019 18:05

Fucking awful hate crime.

Patroclus · 07/06/2019 18:23

Im gussing they arnt releasing pictures cos they have a pretty good idea who it is.

mrsglowglow · 07/06/2019 18:24

I'm not in any way trivialising homophobic abuse and I know of attacks and insults suffered by many but also I do see thuggish behaviour like this where just about any group or person is a target for their aggression and late night buses in London are scary. Have seen girls attacked for being goth, blokes for just being young blokes, gays, lesbians, being fat, ugly (insults shouted by thugs). When you're upstairs on them you are trapped and only a driver until help arrives. The major problem is the agressive thugs who just want trouble and seem to get a buzz from violence. there's so much of it now that this awful attack didnt even make the local news til a month later.

Ivy44 · 07/06/2019 18:28

@mo
I’m sorry to hear that. I had no idea that still happened. Thought we’d left that behind in the 80s. I genuinely didn’t think our generation was homophobic. The only open homophobes I’ve met were my grandparents generation. I do think we are going backwards in a lot of ways now.

TurquoiseDress · 07/06/2019 18:29

Absolutely vile behaviour, I hope they catch the bastards responsible

Ivy44 · 07/06/2019 18:32

This thread has been eye opening. I didn’t realise homophobia was still so rife.

Of course we still need Pride. Along with a lot of other things to stamp out homophobia. It’s not up to straight people to decide whether or not we still need Prude, as we have no experience of homophobia. Evidenced by the fact that until reading this thread, I thought most homophobia had died out with my grandparents generation.

That is actually pretty harrowing

Poor poor women I so hope they have lovely families

blackteasplease · 07/06/2019 18:45

Disgusting. I really hope these men are caught!

Fallofrain · 07/06/2019 18:45

As a gay woman, ive received more homophobia from women then men.

Just as a counter to the narrative that homophobia is a male problem

Dungeondragon15 · 07/06/2019 18:46

I'm glad that they have been arrested now. There does seem to be more homophobia recently. The fact that people are allowed to protest against the no outsiders program doesn't help. It infuriates me that the protests weren't stomped on straight away and that the program was actually suspended in some schools.
