How many times kids taken to A and E

louise5754 · 06/06/2019 17:46

Hi I'm just curious. I wondered how common it is for kids to go to a and e and for what reason?

I've been speaking to a lot of mums today and it seems to happen a lot more than I thought.

Dd
Swallowed a metal ball
Burnt hand_ needed a skin graft
Suspected broken srm, it wasnt
An earring lodged in her her lobe

Ds
Several times for febrile convulsions
Ate a plant in the garden and was given charcoal
Put a tooth through his lip

CarolDanvers · 06/06/2019 21:32

OMG I forgot the ball bearing pushed in the ear that had to eventually be removed under GA!

Witchend · 06/06/2019 21:58

DD1 is 18yo and has never been.
Dd2 went twice within a fortnight age 4yo then didn't go again until age 10yo when she was sent 4or 5 times in 6 months due to severe stomach pains which turned out to be anxiety.
Ds first went at 10weeks old and probably had gone 20 times before he was 2yo.
He used to get a viral rash that didn't fade under glass so the gp sent him for blood tests. He also had a badly twisted ankle that we were sent about 3 times over a month, a knee injury and neurovirus and a swollen elbow.
He then didn't go to A&E for about 5 years, when he broke his wrist, and then hasn't been since-nearly 4 years.

QueenBlueberries · 06/06/2019 22:03

ds1 about 4 times before the age of 4 (including a fracture and another incident with suspected head injury but he was fine, just ended up with whiplash). Then nothing until now (he's 14).

DS2 about 8 times as he had 'wheezing' problems when he was little. Hasn't been since he was around 5. And the one time when he put a pea up his nose the little bugger.

corythatwas · 06/06/2019 22:16

Depends on the child. Dd who has Ehlers Danlos syndrome and could fall over and knock herself out cold walking down the hallway- a lot, a lot, a LOT.

She also gets far more ill than other people with ordinary infections, so would end up in hospital where another child would be wrapped up on the sofa watching the telly.

Now a young adult and has been spending the last month learning to walk again after an ordinary throat infection (what most of us would think of as a slight cold) knocked part of her brain function out. She still can't speak properly and has lost part of her vision. I used to think I was a dreadful mum because such weird things happened to dd. (the medical staff thought so too)

Ds a couple of times- once for a football injury, once as a young teen when he was attacked by a couple of lads his own age and had his head kicked as he was lying on the ground.

I've never had a proper accident in my life. Combination of cautious and lucky. But did have croup as a child which led to several quick rides to A & E. My db otoh has had several accidents both as a child and as an adult.

3boysandabump · 06/06/2019 22:18

Dc1 has been once when he had a fit.

Dc2 has been once - stitches to his finger

Dc3 has been once trapped his finger in a door and had to have an op to stitch it on

Dc4 has never been

This doesn't include walk in/ooh appointments

3boysandabump · 06/06/2019 22:19

Oh no actually dc3 has been twice he split his head open as well

BellatrixLeStrangest · 06/06/2019 22:23

DD aged 5. Twice slapped cheek and bumping her head at nursery

DS aged 3- roughly about 8 times but could be more:
5 x for croup, 1x limp after he'd hurt his leg and 2x for head injuries.

Number3or4 · 06/06/2019 22:27

Ds1 two times but only because I was told to. First time by calling 111 and I assumed you can call them for advice. I wanted to know who to call/ make an appointment with after he fell on to a toy and had a large cut on his gum. He was 10months at the time and I didn't know if he hurt his teeth that was growing. So I called them to ask should I make an appointment with gp or a dentist for a gum injure. They said to take him to a & e, even after I told them I don't think it an a & e job, the lady insisted I took him asap. He was fine, it was just a cut.

Second time, he had a fall at school and cut his upper lip. School called and said take him to a&e he could possibly get some stitches. He didn't need it but as school said take him, I took him.

wtftodo · 06/06/2019 22:32

DD 5:

  • 7months for allergic reaction
  • 13months with pneumonia
  • and again because it got worse
  • 22 months in an ambulance with suspected meningitis (it wasn’t)
  • 2yrs with tonsillitis
And we should have taken her several other tones, really, for asthma. DD 3:
  • 18months, for turning blue at nursery (because it was a cold day and she’d been playing in water outside and they insisted I collect her and take her...)
moveoverhogger · 06/06/2019 22:33

8 yr old DD
2 x with pulled elbow
1 x badly cut toe with nail hanging by a thread
2 x smashed her head open (once off a wall & once on the corner of radiator
1 x suspected fracture in ankle (turned out to be a v bad sprain)
1 x injury caused by a dog scratching her

Thankfully haven't had any trips to A&E for last few years

kaytee87 · 06/06/2019 22:35

Once at a couple of weeks old as he had lumps on his jawline, the gp wasn't sure about them and said if i was still worried about them to go to hospital.
They thought they were caused by his forceps delivery.

Pomfluff · 06/06/2019 22:35

I’ve been to A&E 3 times as a child
Age 12: Stitches after crashing into a wall with my bike
Age 15: Bad infection after a bug bite/boil on my leg got infected
Age 17: More stitches after smashing my head into a fence playing football at school

Never had to go as an adult (now 34). My DD is just 6months so no trips with her, knock wood :)

stoplickingthetelly · 06/06/2019 22:38

Dc1 is 6 and he’s been once. This was when he was 5 months old and had a rash. He was perfectly well, but the baby clinic midwife noticed it when she weighed him (he didn’t have the rash when I got him dressed for baby clinic) that morning. Rash didn’t blanch so sent me to A & E. Turned out to be viral and he was absolutely fine.
Dc2 has been once for a similar reason. At about 3 months old we had an outpatient appointment with the surgical team who also spotted a non-balancing mystery rash that had appeared all of a sudden. They walked us round to A & E. Also turned out to be viral and she was fine. We’ve never had a genuine emergency thank goodness.

Dontbestupidagain · 06/06/2019 22:40

DS1 (14) twice. Once for bronchiolitis and once for a broken arm.
DS (9) twice. Once for broken arm and once when he stuck Lego up his nose.
DD 1 and 2 never.

NoMorePeppa · 06/06/2019 22:44

DC1 (9yrs) 30+ admissions. He has been chronically unwell since birth

DC2 (3yrs) twice (both bronchiolitis, two days apart)

DC3 (1yr) never.. fingers crossed it stays that way

MsAwesomeDragon · 06/06/2019 22:46

Dd1 has been twice. She's 19.
She was there as a toddler because she had a cyst on her neck, she was admitted for a week.
Then as a teenager she dropped a pile of plates on her foot. They x-rayed her and had to do something to her nail, drill through it to release the pressure I think.

Dd2 has only been there once. She's 9.
DH lifted her by the arm and dislocated her elbow. DH was horrified that he'd done that, even by accident.

When I was a child though, I knew all the nurses at a &e by name I was there so often. I've never broken a bone, but was incredibly accident prone as a child so have had many, many x-rays and lots of stitches.

whojamaflip · 06/06/2019 22:49

Ds1 - A&E once for concussion, MI for broken thumb, broken wrist, access in hand and an oat in his ear!!

Dd1 - A&E suspected broken jaw and split lip (gymnastics) MI for finger trapped in car door

Ds2 - A&E grand mal siezure,

Dd2 - A&E broken jaw and reconstructive surgery after falling from moving vehicle, MI twice for forehead glueing.

YesQueen · 06/06/2019 22:59

I've been far too much and probably should not be allowed near sharp objects

As a child
Anaphylactic reaction to egg x 2
Car crash
Seizures x 3
Broken foot
Broken bum (went down concrete stairs on roller blades) Hmm
Hypothermia

Then as a teen to adult

Broken foot and ankle x 2
Chest pains x 8? Turned out to be panic attacks
Pyrex dish smashed and shard stuck in eye
Burns from boiling caramel to arm
Cellulitis in ankle and leg
Sciatica x 4

Onefootforward1 · 06/06/2019 23:02

Allergy kids. All the time!

GruciusMalfoy · 06/06/2019 23:03

DS (10) never been to A&E, minor injuries once
DD (7) once for a split head a few years ago. She was too young for minor injuries in our locality, we were directed to children's A&E.

Walkerbean16 · 06/06/2019 23:06

DS - once when he was 3 months old for bronchiolitis.

Dd1 once when she very badly burnt her arm on my hair straighteners

Dd2 never

Dd3 never

Tartsamazeballs · 06/06/2019 23:07

DD (2.5) is a frequent flyer. 1. Wouldn't wake up as a baby 2. Allergic reaction at 6m. 3. Chicken pox at 8m 4. Head wound at 8m 5. Suspected seizure 1.5yrs. 6. Suspected seizure 1.8yrs

DS (8m) is much lower maintenance comparatively, he's never been!

MamaRaisingBoys · 06/06/2019 23:07

Ds(3) twice, one for funny breathing at a few days old. The other for a rash at about 10 months

Ds(1) 4 times, twice for meningitis, once because he wasn’t feeding properly after meningitis and once because of a high temp but was told to take him back every time it happened in his first year as he’d had meningitis twice already

steff13 · 06/06/2019 23:09

#1 son, age 20, has been once, the doctor thought he had appendicitis

#2 son, age 17, has been twice, once for severe abdominal pain and once because he passed out and they couldn't wake him up
