I've just realised we have 5 indoor bins: paper/card; tin/glass; compostable waste; other food waste; general bin.
As so much gets recycled, the 30L general bin usually only contains non-recyclable plastic (the existence of which really irritates me) or the sweepings from the floor. It rarely smells and takes about ten days or so to fill up when it then goes in the wheelie bin. I only put my wheelie bin out for collection when it's full, which can take a couple of months.
Food bin gets emptied more frequently as it fills up quickly with tea bags and uneaten cat food (fussy buggers) and the flies love it in the summer.
I've also just started a "carrier bag" bag since discovering things like cereal box inner bags get recycled with carriers down at the supermarket. I'm kicking mysef at all these cereal bags I've sent to landfill over the years when they could have gone to Tesco!
Also have a small carrier bag for batteries, lightbulbs, broken earphones, chargers, cable, and other small electricals that get taken to the recycling centre.
Oh, and a cardboard box for cartons,. which also goes to the recycling centre when full.
So that's 8 separate waste containers - no wonder the general bin takes forever to fill up. 20 years ago it all went into just the one bin, emptied daily. Our poor planet.
