To ask how often you empty your kitchen bin?

Ours is emptied daily and is usually full to the brim each time. DH says we clearly have way too much rubbish and shouldn’t be emptying it so often. Confused

How frequently do you empty your bins?

Twice a week unless there's something pongy in there like raw fish wrappings.

We compost all fruit and vegetable waste, recycle most plastics, paper, cardboard etc.

BarbaraofSevillle · 31/05/2019 12:08

Obviously due to the variation in size of bin and family and how much you cook etc, it's a bit of a 'how long is a piece of string' question, but filling a bin every day does sound like you are throwing away a lot.

What goes in the bin? Are you wasting lots of food? Are you throwing away things that should be recycled, composted or reused? Those are the questions that you need answers for.

InterestingShipNames · 31/05/2019 12:09

Once a week. We create about one black bag or non recyclable rubbish a week for a family of four.

We do fill a 5l food waste bin each week. And a wheely bin of paper / cardboard and a big crate of other recycling every two weeks.

MustardScreams · 31/05/2019 12:09

Once every 2 weeks or so. I’ve drastically reduced my plastic waste though by shopping at a zero waste shop that recently opened and buying loose from the market or butchers etc.

Recycling 2/3 times a week. Food waste goes out weekly.

MustardScreams · 31/05/2019 12:10

That’s for dd and I.

UnicornBrexit · 31/05/2019 12:13

Bin? One bin?

I have a scraps bin - thats emptied at least
The recycling is taken out daily - paper/glass/plastics
Anything else goes in the main bin, so there are no smells and one bin bag a week suffices.

NCforthis2019 · 31/05/2019 12:13

Of course this depends on how big your bin is?! We have a 90l and empty weekly.

thecatsthecats · 31/05/2019 12:13

30l bin emptied once a week, with all the other bins in the house emptied into the same bag.

When the bin strike was on and they were only collecting every three weeks, our council bin was only just getting full.

Food waste goes to the compost heap, cardboard and plastic etc gets put straight by the front door to be taken out as we leave in the morning, and smelly waste/things that will go off badly like bones goes straight out.

When we have a kid, we'll get a little bin for immediately next to the front door outside to minimise trips out/kitchen bin emptying.

Aridane · 31/05/2019 12:14

x1 a week

Aridane · 31/05/2019 12:14

(though recycling goes out daily)

Sparklingbrook · 31/05/2019 12:14

Every day whether it's full or not.

Bluntness100 · 31/05/2019 12:15

Doesn't this depend on how big your bin is and how many people are in the home?

Do you recycle? Does your rubbish fit in the wheelie bins provided? Then there is no issue.

SpeckleDust · 31/05/2019 12:16

Do you have recycling bins? Emptying a fill bin every day does seem a lot but depends on how big your bin is.

We are able to recycle almost everything except some plastic packaging but I try to avoid buying this as much as possible. We have a 30L Brabantia bin which is probably emptied once a week but we only have a general waste collection every two weeks and it’s never overflowing.

Creatureofthenight · 31/05/2019 12:16

Usually twice a week unless it’s smelly, so 2 black bin bags a week for 3 of us. Nappy bags go straight in the wheelie bin.

FuriousVexation · 31/05/2019 12:17

30L bin, there's two of us, usually once a week unless there's been something abnormal

Lazypuppy · 31/05/2019 12:18

Large bin, 1 big bin bag and empty normally once a week unless it starts to smell. 2 adults, 1 baby

Nappies go in a seperate purple bin bag as they can go out extra to our black bin

Cwtches123 · 31/05/2019 12:18

Family of 4 with a large kitchen bin, it's usually emptied once a week. We recycle everything we can, the only things that go in the bin are the non-recyclable wrappings etc.
As a rule, we have one bag of non-recycleable rubbish per week. All food waste and peelings go in the food bin, paper, plastic, glass and tins are all collected by our council weekly.

MillicentMartha · 31/05/2019 12:19

The landfill rubbish is only plastic film, Pringles tubes and tetra packs these days. It doesn’t smell as all food waste and plate scrapings go separately. So 20l bin, once a week maybe. My big rubbish bin collection is fortnightly and the bin is only 1/4 full. Family of 4, teenage children.

We get kerbside collections for tins, foil, paper, jars and most plastic items (except bags and film) once a fortnight. A caddy for food waste every week so no maggots to worry about.

Gth1234 · 31/05/2019 12:20

we empty when it's full. We certainly seem to be getting less waste nowadays, though. recycling paper and plastics helps reduce what goes in the bin.

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 31/05/2019 12:22

The kitchen bin daily but not because it is full but to stop odours coming from it. All the other bins I empty the day before bin day into the wheels bin. Never have a full wheel bin and I can often add garden rubbish to it.

delilahbucket · 31/05/2019 12:22

If it was left until it was full it would be around once a week, but it's usually every 3-4 days so it doesn't smell. We recycle a lot of our rubbish and have a food recycling collection too so very little ends up in the main bin.

confussedmisfit · 31/05/2019 12:24

I shall answer this in two parts from two different points of view.

My wife: Empty bin?? Why do you need to empty it? There's always room in it, even if I have to stamp it down, ripping the bin liner in the process.
It always fits.

Me: EVERY. PISSING. DAY!!!!!!!

Ivestoppedreadingthenews · 31/05/2019 12:26

2-3 times a week. Family of 5. Everyday seems a lot to me.

TeenTimesTwo · 31/05/2019 12:28

At most twice in a week.
Normally lasts 5-7 days. On bin collection day we empty all the other bins around the house into the kitchen or recycling. So often day 5 with kitchen stuff, then day 7 with new kitchen stuff plus randoms from elsewhere and also hamster cage contents.

We have kerbside for paper, metal, plastic bottles, (all together in same brown bin) and garden waste, and then recycling points for glass and textiles. Nearby tip for electricals & batteries or anything large.

Scottishgirl85 · 31/05/2019 12:28

30L bin, once a week. Family of 4. Nappies go straight out. Some people are creating too much rubbish on here!
