To ask how often you empty your kitchen bin?

Ours is emptied daily and is usually full to the brim each time. DH says we clearly have way too much rubbish and shouldn’t be emptying it so often. Confused

How frequently do you empty your bins?

What are you putting in your bin that can't be recycled? That might help you think about whether you have too much waste.

Mine is emptied once a week typically, and recycling twice a week.

weegiemum · 31/05/2019 15:34

About twice a week. We're very good recyclers though, we recycle everything! Have bins for glass, plastic, tins (and foil), food waste, cardboard and our local recycling centre has a bin for Tetra Pak (which makes me feel better about feeding ds17 cranberry juice habit!). So we're throwing out very little in the general waste bin - we could do with recycling being picked up more regularly than general waste (currently both fortnightly).

WalterIris · 31/05/2019 15:48

Small compost bin - daily
12L - general waste bin - 1/2 week depending on what is in there (if something like chicken bones will empty straight after)

Everything else is sorted into various recycling and is taken to the recycling centre or bins when we pass

buttery81 · 31/05/2019 15:54

We have a big bin, it's just me and DH and we empty it once a week. I'm thinking of getting a smaller bin though as with such infrequent emptying, it does sometimes start to smell quite bad by day 5/6.

All our recycling (paper, plastic etc) goes into a different bin.

WindsweptEgret · 31/05/2019 15:55

We recycle a lot though. Our recycling is collected fortnightly and the wheelie bin is usually at least 2/3 full. How big is your bin? There's two of us and the recycling bin (240L) would take about three months to fill (I put it out at half full). That's recycling everything we can. We have a separate box for paper and cardboard though.

CherryPavlova · 31/05/2019 15:57

At least daily, whether full or not. We don’t settle for the evening without all clearing up from supper finished and that includes emptying the kitchen bin. I don’t want a smelly kitchen or flies.

cookiechomper · 31/05/2019 15:58

Once or twice a day but I've got four kids, 2 in nappies and it's a smallish bin.

Drogosnextwife · 31/05/2019 16:06

Usually every other day

Allyg1185 · 31/05/2019 16:07

In our area we have a landfill bin, a cardboard bin, garden and foodwaste bin and plastics also at the bottom of my street there is a glass recycling point.

Out little food bin in the house is emptied daily into the bin in the garden. This one is collected every 2 weeks along with the landfill. We have a small kitchen bin and that is usually emptied every couple of days as there is nothing really much put in it. Our county is one of the best at recycling

cheesenpickles · 31/05/2019 16:10

Once a week? It's only a small ikea type one and we have a bigger bin in the conservatory for big stuff/nappies etc. Usually all the bathroom bins fit into this too and we put one black bag of rubbish out a week. We do seem to create a lot less waste than others on our road. Not sure how though. We're a family of four.

stucknoue · 31/05/2019 16:15

30litres, 1-2 times a week household of 4 adults

reluctantbrit · 31/05/2019 16:25

2x30l bins one for recycling, one for general rubbish. The first one depends how many bottles we use, we now have a carbonator, so no more water bottles, it now lasts .3-4 days at least.

The general rubbish manybe once a week.

Food around 2-3 days, every second day when we cook ore than once a day.

Paper is a small crate underneath the sink, depending on the amount of advertising we get.

TrashPanda · 31/05/2019 16:31

We have this www.homebase.co.uk/50l-swing-and-lift-bin-platinum_p425168 and probably empty it 2 or 3 times a week. Card, paper and plastic get recycled separately but the few tins and bottles don't because recycling here is stupid! We are a family of 5 with 1 in nappies. I wish we had the system my parents have, one bin for card, paper, tins, bottles, plastic, batteries, textiles another for food waste and a third for anything not recyclable or compostable.

TreadingThePrimrosePath · 31/05/2019 16:35

So, look at what’s going into the bin, and what you can all do to reduce the waste.
We landfill around half a black bin liner every fortnight, half a wheelie bin of recycling and one kitchen compost caddy of scraps.
It’s no good him whinging, he needs to look at the problem in more detail and come up with reasonable alternatives.

CouldBeOuting · 31/05/2019 16:57

I have 2 11litre bins from ikea as in this picture. The front bin (which has a lid) is used for any food waste and is emptied weekly (more often in the summer). The rear bin only has non recyclable and usually only needs emptying fortnightly but only waste created in the kitchen goes in there, we have waste bins in every room.

Our non recyclable waste is collected fortnightly but I only put the bin out monthly as it just doesn’t get full.

CouldBeOuting · 31/05/2019 16:57

Forgot picture!

To ask how often you empty your kitchen bin?
Dontmakemepullover · 31/05/2019 17:00

We have two, one for regular and on recycle. Over a week probably about 4 times for both, they are quite big though.

Teachermaths · 31/05/2019 17:07

25 litre and 3 of us. Emptied every 1.5 weeks ish. We have cardboard, tins and plastic recycled by the council and food waste is taken too.

Unless your bin is tiny, daily emptying is a lot of rubbish. Look at what you are throwing away.

fleshmarketclose · 31/05/2019 17:11

I don't have a bin, recycling goes straight in the bin and I have a small sandwich bag i keep on the side for waste that goes in black bin. i put it in the bin each evening as I lock up before I go to bed. I found having a bin just felt like an added task to see to tbh.

MerryDeath · 31/05/2019 17:21

either because it's 3/4 full or it smells. it's bigger than i'd like it so that is 2, sometimes 3 per week.

LeggyLinda · 31/05/2019 17:58

Probably every other day. It’s never near full, but the smell would be awful if we left it any longer

Likethebattle · 31/05/2019 18:01

About twice a week but we recycle as much as possible as general waste is only picked up every three weeks.

JaceLancs · 31/05/2019 18:20

About every 5/6 days
We recycle glass, some plastic, paper and cardboard separately so could last longer but would get smelly

floraloctopus · 31/05/2019 18:21

We don't have a kitchen bin - the wheelie bin is outside the kitchen door so we just put stuff straight in there.

CassianAndor · 31/05/2019 18:22

Once a week? Our rubbish is collected fortnightly, I think we usually have 2 or 3 bin bags (that’s all the house bins).

Once a day is an awful lot of waste. Do you not have recycling, OP?
