What the hell with colleague

We have a colleague who is always instigating work socialising and organising nights out. Prob is she never wants to pay for anything. She never ever buys a drink. She always asks me and my colleagues to get the bogof drinks and she will get the next ones but she never does. She has blagged lunches off colleagues by forgetting her purse app and never paying back. We went out yest and my colleague said she would get the first drink but she needed to get the next ones. She never did. It was awkward as she just sat there with empty glasses. A couple of times she has been on lunch and said she needed a sandwich but forgotten her purse. We went in the sandwich shop once on her request and I'd already eaten a sandwich from home as trying to save money. She looked in her purse she only had some pound coins which she is collecting app. She then proceeded to ask me to pay for her sandwich as she can't spend her coins as collecting. She's asking me and a colleague to come on a few nights out with work in the next few months and trying to convince us to come for a break away. I don't know how to deal with her politely as she won't pay for anything! It's really starting to piss me off. Aibu?

If money isn’t accounted for, I think you might have a co worker with a gambling problem. Has she ever mentioned using slot machines? That would explain why she is determined to ‘save’ her pound coins.

Or she’s just a greedy thief.

Ooh, that's not a good update OP - I hope the company is keeping a close eye on the money she manages. What sort of things are going missing?

Just to strengthen your spine, I'll give an example of what a non CF does when they genuinely forget their purse or their child has removed it from her handbag, that morning, to get lunch money, and left it on the side I found myself at a supermarket checkout with a tenner's worth of groceries, and realised I'd forgotten my purse. I asked my friend to pay for it please, and I'd pay her back - I don't have any of the apps set up on my phone to pay for the shopping with my phone as I don't fully understand what to do! She did happily (as I would, and have done, for her) and I used paypal to reimburse her within half an hour. If someone genuinely misplaces, or forgets their purse, fair enough, but they will also follow it up with payment.
Don't let this woman take the piss - why should you pay for her lifestyle?

I'd be mentioning this to HR, tbh - not only is the office money down, but she's constantly asking/expecting others to pay for her lunch, to buy her coffees, etc. I think they might be interested to know about her financial habits.

DH’s friend does this. Always makes sure he’s last in the round or goes to the loo. Then, one night DH was with his and there was 4 of them and it was finally the ‘friend’s’ turn. DH was driving so bear in mind that his friend had been given a free lift and 3 beers already. He asked DH what he wanted and DH said a pint of orange juice. His friend said it was too expensive and came back with half a coke!!

With that update - no more messing about!

You need to speak to hr ASAP!

Someone with her attitude to other people's money should absolutely NOT have any financial responsibilities.

I was involved in a charity and friendly with everyone but especially the treasurer and her family (or so I thought)

As a result of getting to know them and spending time with their extended family too certain things about their expenditure seemed suss.

As my suspicions grew I made the mistake of making comments but not handling it properly assertively (I have mental illness and wasn't very well at the time)

The next thing I knew I was being gaslit on certain matters and THEN I was accused of making a play for her husband! By them both! Completely and utterly untrue had never even been alone with him and tbh while he seemed a nice enough chap not my type.

I was ostracised from the group and the whole thing was extremely upsetting.

About 8 months later I bumped into the chairman in the supermarket, I'll be honest I clocked him and turned to avoid. He came sort of jogging up to me and I got an apology and an invite to return to the group - the treasurer had been caught embezzling the funds and using the charity to get payday loans etc!

I didn't return as I had no faith in them after how they had treated me.

Awful time. I'm not so trusting now.

I'm sorry but if she's taking office money then a formal complaint needs to be made.

Angie169 · 07/06/2019 15:28

You would have to be sure that she is taking office £s before accusing her , if she is not it could lead to alsorts of issues , if she is and she knows she has been found out I think it's unlikely that she will stop , she will just get better at hiding it.
Can you speak to someone and get them to do a spot audit ( common practice where I work )

SomewhereInbetween1 · 07/06/2019 16:01

What a strange woman! How has she got this far in life without being called out?

Thatsalovelycuppatea · 07/06/2019 18:13

She sounds awful. I'd refuse to go next time.

H2OH20Everywhere · 10/06/2019 19:28

Did she turn up for work today?
