To ask brexiteers to explain to me why they want us to leave the EU?

I have a totally open mind here. I did vote remain but I genuinely want to know why people think that leaving the EU is a good thing?
I’m not being goady - I actually want people to convince me that Brexit is a good thing so I don’t feel so terrified of what’s to come!
So what is it about the EU that’s bad for us? What will we achieve by leaving?

@Lefty1

Enough of the insults. Have I insulted you? No. I am trying to understand a frankly, confusing story of someone voting to leave based on dislike of an English law. I know you didn't post the link but you addressed me directly in the midst of the discussion on the metric martyrs - if you were referring to some other subject perhaps you could make that clear?

Lefty1 · 27/05/2019 20:24

We aren’t voting to leave on this : someone voting to leave based on dislike of an English law
We are voting to leave so that English laws are the laws that should have seniority in England and not be superseded by the European Union. Much better to have laws that are streamlined to suit our own country’s needs than a blanket type “one size fits all” approach.

Lefty1 · 27/05/2019 20:25

And that’s just part of it as well as many other good reasons that have been mentioned up thread.

Yabbers · 27/05/2019 20:26

@Lefty1, I was referring to your earlier post. I hadn’t seen your later one.

Yabbers · 27/05/2019 20:29

Much better to have laws that are streamlined to suit our own country’s needs than a blanket type “one size fits all” approach.
Can you name 5 laws which have impacted on your life in a detrimental way? And how about 5 which have benefitted you?

Lefty1 · 27/05/2019 20:42

@Yabbers this is about the country as a whole being empowered to make the overiding laws in our own country. That’s the point , not how/if I’ve been personally impacted by an EU law.
But I have gave an example up thread of where EU legislation has been applied poorly . I can find more but you could probably do that yourself right? And it seems as though your mind is fully made up so why should I spend time listing these reasons when you don’t and never will think that it’s valid enough reason to leave the EU. Smile

For example certain food colourings banned in Europe but allowed in US will be allowed into the UK. And Chinese food standards ?
Why can’t we the U.K. make our own standards ? Is it beyond the U.K. population?!

do you not care about the conditions and standards that the US, China, Russia will require to do business. are their any documents stating what their trading rates will be with the U.K.? Or are we just projecting it will be bad , the sky will then inevitably fall in on us all followed by the zombie apocalypse

Lefty1 · 27/05/2019 20:50

These are your new choices, says who though? Are the U.K. not able to make fair laws then ourselves ? Are we all incompetent?

Personally I buy my food from farmers markets & local butchers.

Justanotherlurker · 27/05/2019 21:09

So you only eat seasonal, no fruit in winter, can you be sure that that farmers markets have not used US products to maximize production using US technology?

Lefty1 · 27/05/2019 21:12

I don’t really eat fruit tbf but I do have my own apple tree.

I don’t think anyone can be absolutely sure of their food’s complete family history tbh.

We can put our own standards together surely , I don’t dispute the need to have them . Someone mentioned upthread that the US won’t want to meet any higher standards but we don’t know that , we haven’t held discussions with them on the issue . There’s lots of solutions to this issue and the U.K putting that control firmly back in our hands will only be to our long term benefit.

LemonTT · 27/05/2019 21:21

I voted remain and would still do that. But the reality is that the Remain camp didn't make a compelling argument in a debate that split between Heart (leave) and Head (remain). All independence votes follow that pattern.

No country that even voted for independence ever prospered in the immediate aftermath, most suffered economically, socially and politically. Proponents of independence and their supporters know this. They accept it because they want independence and the right to self determination.

Even the leaders of the Remain Campaign acknowledge they got it very wrong and did not sell their cause. Leave did very cleverly and very well.

Its the remain argument that needs to be made.

Justanotherlurker · 27/05/2019 21:26

All while being in the EU?

The horse meat scandal found out that it was years before it was uncovered, this is just the NHS debate all over, where we should offer better services onling the lines of Scandinavia without the tax rises, and reform the NHS but the default argument is wanting to introduce an america style situation.

It is arguing in bad faith, and not at all nuanced.

@Ohmygoodness101 we could increase our own production in the U.K. for one and also u.s isn’t the only option, we can arrange for one on one deals with various other countries . Your forecasting without any of it being fact that these worries will materialise .

Also poster above has valid point about the horses , I’d forgotten all about that !

could increase our own production in the U.K. for one

Well we could. But we’ve done absolutely nothing to make that happen and there seems no will to do it. Plus we’re limited in what can be grown here.

and also u.s isn’t the only option, we can arrange for one on one deals with various other countries

And what puts us in a position of strength with any of them? Confused
