To ask brexiteers to explain to me why they want us to leave the EU?

ethelfleda · 27/05/2019 09:00

I have a totally open mind here. I did vote remain but I genuinely want to know why people think that leaving the EU is a good thing?
I’m not being goady - I actually want people to convince me that Brexit is a good thing so I don’t feel so terrified of what’s to come!
So what is it about the EU that’s bad for us? What will we achieve by leaving?

If another referendum happens, what should happen is that both sides are forced to actually tell the truth

With psychoactive drugs and lights shone in their eyes perhaps? Wink

Good luck with the wish, anyway - these are politicians we're talking about remember?

flumpybear · 27/05/2019 18:22

@Puzzledandpissedoff - lol

Someone described politicians as the shit that comes out of the public schooling system, those who did well got real jobs, those who couldn't became politicians .... we've got no hope'n

BoneyBackJefferson · 27/05/2019 18:25

Puzzledandpissedoff

these are politicians we're talking about remember?

Yup, I agree, they will always have some excuse for not putting forward the facts.

Teaonthebedsheets · 27/05/2019 18:45

wino I know it's not legislated for yet, that's why I said it in my post. You said that the EU sets and stands by it, but that's not right. The UK could have zero rated it before 1992 but obviously did not (it's not specifically set by the EU) and nor does the EU appear to stand by it. So I don't see it as much of a reason to leave the EU. In the grand scheme of things which might be impacted by withdrawing from a huge free trade area, it's a small issue and one which will be resolved even if we remain. This particular issue gets my goat because it was in the press a lot when I was still working as an accountant and it's reported so inaccurately in the UK media (as are lots of things relating to tax).

Teaonthebedsheets · 27/05/2019 18:51

ScruffGin's post upthread made some good points. I think the eurozone project is doomed to fail without closer integration and that's something I don't want, though I would still vote remain in another referendum.

MissUGirl · 27/05/2019 18:55

After we extricate ourselves from the disintegrating EU, we need a campaign for massive political reform within the UK—one that involves some kind of proportional representation. The typical 'debate' that takes place within the House of Commons is a joke and a disgrace.
We need to work together for the good of all and stop accepting politicians' lies.
We are capable of this.

Southwestten · 27/05/2019 19:24

Flumpybear there are plenty of poor politicians who went to state school.

Gth1234 · 27/05/2019 19:40

Among many reasons I could give, the case of Steven Thoburn.

Convicted for selling a pound of tomatos.
(pedants everywhere- I put tomatos as I think that is correct, but either windows or mumsnet seemed to think it needed an e.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metric_Martyrs

More than enough for me to want to leave.

timeforakinderworld · 27/05/2019 19:47

So you think everybody should be free to use whatever system of weights and measures they like. Confused Yeah, I can see that working really well. No possibility of confusion whatsoever.

Interesting that you write "I put tomatos as I think that is correct". It is not correct as you well know but it seems that you just don't like rules! (And I wouldn't have mentioned it if your comment hadn't been so fitting with your post!)

timeforakinderworld · 27/05/2019 19:48

(And btw there is no plan to go back to the imperial system even if we aren't in the EU so yes, it is a completely daft reason for wanting to wreck the economy).

timeforakinderworld · 27/05/2019 19:50

2) England fought and won two world wars not to be goverened by another country

Just England (not even the UK this time!). Just England. On its own. OK.....

Lefty1 · 27/05/2019 19:52

@timeforakinderworld there’s a thing called the Internet where you can work out what the equal of one measurement is to the other , some people also know this info off the the top their head. But do you really think it was just to arrest and convict a man because he sold his veg using an old score weight method....Hmm

givemesteel · 27/05/2019 19:55

www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2019/05/26/eus-filthiest-states-pocketing-clean-energy-funds-no-plans-phase/

Here's an example of the sort of thing a lot of people in this country are sick of - waste of resources, lack of reciprocity, being a net contributor when nearly every other country is a net receiver, being tied to countries that are economically and otherwise less progressive than ours ....

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 27/05/2019 19:57

Winning world wars is one thing, winning the peace is a whole different story.

Lefty1 · 27/05/2019 19:58

*2) England fought and won two world wars not to be goverened by another country

Just England (not even the UK this time!). Just England. On its own. OK.*

Did I say just England ? Digressing because you cant think of an ample argument. But given that we fought as partof those wars we should leave and run our country ourselves.

timeforakinderworld · 27/05/2019 19:59

there’s a thing called the Internet where you can work out what the equal of one measurement is to the other

So you think it would be fairer to make everyone carry around a smart phone or calculator and work out the difference? Maybe some people would want to use gallons instead of litres or even perches, chains or furlongs so why stop there? OR you could just insist that everyone uses the same system like every civilized country does. What has that got to do with the EU anyway? He was breaking British law.

Lefty1 · 27/05/2019 20:00

@ChardonnaysPrettySister we probably would have a better chance of peace if the politicians actually fell in line with democracy.

timeforakinderworld · 27/05/2019 20:01

Did I say just England ?

Yes you did. I am quoting from your post.

Strangely enough the people who are actually old enough to have fought in WW2 actually understand the value of the EU and don't see it like you do.

Lefty1 · 27/05/2019 20:01

@timeforakinderworld I buy my clothes online , I have to work out what the U.K. applicable size is for Chinese sizes , it’s absolutely no problem and certainly nothing that anyone should be arrested for 😂 ffs

Yabbers · 27/05/2019 20:03

@quizqueen

A good proportion of what you “want” is already the case.

@lefty1

Isn’t the reason much of the industry has failed, to do with the global market economy and the increase in tech solutions, allowing the offshoring of manufacturing and service to cheaper regions (which are outwith the EU)?

Lefty1 · 27/05/2019 20:04

@timeforakinderworld ok obviously you didn’t score great on comprehension so I’ll walk through this , here is my quote:

2) England fought and won two world wars not to be goverened by another country

Where does that say that England fought the war ALONE? It says we won world wars , which we did ! As we were part of it . To say we didn’t is false 😂😂😂

timeforakinderworld · 27/05/2019 20:05

Surely it's not hard to understand that if you are at the supermarket or at the greengrocer's it is easier to use ONE system of measurement. The story you linked to was not about buying ONLINE clothes where you are already sitting at your computer. 😂 ffs

And, I repeat, he was arrested under English law and nobody (not even Farage) is proposing going back to Imperial measurements so your point is moot anyway.

Lefty1 · 27/05/2019 20:07

@Yabbers to clarify , I don’t buy all my clothes online , is that the best response you could supply to my rationale of leaving the EU , to ask me to justify my spending habits ? 😂

timeforakinderworld · 27/05/2019 20:09

ok obviously you didn’t score great on comprehension

Nope. That would be you. But seeing as we have to be kind to "Leavers" and give them the benefit of the doubt, I will accept your ambiguous interpretation. Now to address the second issue: in what way are we "governed by another country"? Do you mean the EU? Whcih country do you mean? You criticize my comprehension but how is it possible to be governed by an entity that we are part of and have a decisive role in?

Lefty1 · 27/05/2019 20:09

@timeforakinderworld it wasn’t me that linked the story. It was another poster but we’ve already gathered you don’t have eye for reading detail
