To be delighted That Leave Have Lost

I know it looks as if Brexit have won but in every single case, if you add up all the votes secured by the other parties then together they have more votes than Brexit. That means more people want to remain in Europe than Leave.

Leave didn't lose. Labour and Tories are in the middle - not everyone is strongly either leave or remain anyway although opinion is generally polarised. I voted for an independent, but want to leave. The libdems would sell their own grandma to hold onto power, so wouldn't hold your breath that they'll do what you want now they have some "power"!

3in4years · 27/05/2019 07:52

From the Guardian

The results so far show that the hard Brexit vote totalled 34.9% – with the Brexit party on 31.6% and Ukip on 3.3%. The overall total for pro-leave parties was up at 44% including the Conservatives on a historically low 9.1%.

The pro-remain vote added up to 40.3% – with the Lib Dems on 20.3%, the Greens on 12.1%, the SNP on 3.5%, Change UK on 3.4% and Plaid Cymru on 1%. Labour, which tried to appeal to both sides with a soft Brexit pitch or a possible confirmatory referendum, was on 14.1%.

So leave 'won'. However, it is not win or lose. If you want to remain, you have 31(?) people representing you in the EU. That's good.

oldmum22 · 27/05/2019 07:53

I don't get it .
We are due to leave the EU on October 31st ,so does that mean the MEPs will become redundant after that date ? (Caveat-date could change again ).
If the above is true surely any wins (for any Party) are short lived ?

redcarbluecar · 27/05/2019 07:54

Tbh I think this particular election WAS mainly about Brexit. Hence the Tories, who would probably win a GE, doing so badly. I voted Green as a tactical remain vote, but am also pleased (given that our area has a Green MEP) that their profile and agenda overall will be raised in Europe, at least for as long as we’re in the EU.

redcarbluecar · 27/05/2019 07:56

@oldmum22 yes I think that’s the position. Might be wrong

Yabbers · 27/05/2019 07:57

Ummm...this was the European Parliamentary Elections, right? Not a referendum on Brexit.

My parents are in their 70s and voted remain, but are now so sick of the remainers that they would vote leave if there was another referendum. A number of their friends are in the same position.
And people say we MUST accept democracy, when there are idiotic reasons like this being given for voting a certain way?

Notabedofroses · 27/05/2019 07:58

I think it is fair to say now, that 'leave'/ brexit party have won without a shadow of a doubt. Nine out of ten areas.

It will reinforce the message that leave have gained more support not less. Our area once staunchly lib dems now has entirely brexit MEPs.

The same can be seen across the whole of Europe.

Thanks OP. I gleefully clicked on to my mumsnet bookmark this morning to find a rabid remoaner post, and you did not disappoint 😂

Why is Farage so popular?

Because other than Brexit what are his politics? What is it that is so appealing about him?

cricketballs3 · 27/05/2019 08:09

Watching BBC news, I hold the same opinion as a lady just saying that everyone is fed up of the arguments.

I believe that the Conservatives have lost a huge number of votes due to their infighting, Labour as they just want to fight against the Tories on anything/everything rather than working with them

As much as I hate Farage I do think his summary is correct - if we haven't left by the next GE we will see a very different political landscape

leckford · 27/05/2019 08:10

Well, people have seen how useless and divided both main parties are.

Labour with the current leadership are unelectable. The need to get rid of Corbyn and his chums. However they shot themselves in the foot when they changed the way they select leaders. The party really need to split into two, the communists and the socialists.

The Conservatives need to stop being so wish washy and listen to their voters (and those who’s sneer at older votes need to remember they are the ones who get out of bed to vote). I assume the ‘wonderful’ young ones are too busy smoking weed and shagging, if they vote it will probably be Green.

More police, more border control and less welfare. And less concreting over the countryside. Stop building multi million pound flats in London and build affordable ones.

For starters

BelindasGleeTeam · 27/05/2019 08:10

Farage has been referred to this morning as the tapeworm of British politics, seeking new host bodies to continue his insatiable lust for power.

The man has very, very iffy connections. He thinks Thatcher was marvellous.

If you come from a traditional manufacturing area and voted for that charlatan then you have an exceptionally short memory.

YouBumder · 27/05/2019 08:12

Approximately a third of the votes on about the same proportion of turnout.

Hardly a massive landslide for Farage and co, despite what the right wing press would have you believe. And certainly no mandate for a no deal Brexit

howwudufeel · 27/05/2019 08:12

Sadly, Farage is the most talented politician in UK politics. I despise his politics but there isn’t another politician in the UK who can match him. This is because we have bland career politicians in all the parties and the expenses scandal and the Iraq War shattered our trust in mainstream politics.

givemesteel · 27/05/2019 08:12

Absolutely, it is the same rationale that Labour now have of potentially supporting a second referendum...er we just had it and leave still won. You couldn't make it up.

BogglesGoggles · 27/05/2019 08:13

Dear god. You lot are either incredibly deluded or incredibly spoiled. The majority doesn’t have to agree with you for you position to be valid and you position doesn’t have to be implemented for it to be valid. It’s okfor things you don’t like or expect to happen. If you all grew up instead of trying to pretend you were always right all the time you maybe actually been able to turn this thing around while there was still time.

PostNotInHaste · 27/05/2019 08:13

27 May 2019, Battle of the Spin. As ever beautifully illustrated on MN which due to its tendency to rank highly on Google with key phrases very quickly, attracts a lot of social media attention with the battle of both sides frantically posting to get their key phrases up as fast as possible.

Quartz2208 · 27/05/2019 08:13

The problem is it still shows how divided we are I think the Guardian is probably correct Leave edge it

But that isn’t the real problem which is that no one knows how to safely deliver it. The brexit party is formed in the idea of leaving without any clear idea of how to do so

YouBumder · 27/05/2019 08:14

Sadly, Farage is the most talented politician in UK politics

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂😂😂

Done a right number on you, hasn’t he.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 27/05/2019 08:15

Why is Farage so popular?

He hasn’t flip flopped- all the other politicians are changing their minds according to what they believe the electorate wants- Chukka, May, Corbyn- none of them say what they believe, but rather what they think people want to hear and as such they tie themselves up in knots

Dana28 · 27/05/2019 08:16

Inevitable ae now that a hard Brexit pm will be chosen. Neither Labour nor tories will dare call a GE.. 31st October will come round and with it a no deal Brexit will happen by default if it hasn't already been done.

InTheHeatofLisbon · 27/05/2019 08:16

Sadly, Farage is the most talented politician in UK politics

Er no, he really isn't. He's a charlatan with an ability to bullshit people who aren't very clever.

cricketballs3 · 27/05/2019 08:19

a charlatan with an ability to bullshit people

Isn't that the definition of every politician Grin
