I know it looks as if Brexit have won but in every single case, if you add up all the votes secured by the other parties then together they have more votes than Brexit. That means more people want to remain in Europe than Leave.

It isn’t a clear victory for anyone. I am angry at the inevitable Farage spin pretending this gives a mandate for No Deal but I’m also irritated by anyone saying this is an obvious victory for Remain. What it shows is that the country still looks pretty much as split as in 2016. The referendum result was incredibly close. No progress has been made in three years.

What’s clear is that Cameron’s attempt to destroy UKIP and unite the Tory party was the biggest miscalculation possibly in the history of politics and that the chasm he has opened up is one of unprecedented scale. May’s hard Brexit bluster in the immediate aftermath was similarly disastrous; entrenching the polarisation of a country. Corbyn has rendered the opposition mute and ineffectual.

There is no clear mandate for No Deal or Remain or the WA. I think another referendum would return another very close result. If Remain edged it by a 4% majority, we can see that it wouldn’t satisfy or subdue Leavers and vice versa. There will be a huge swell of anger either way.

It will be interesting to see if Corbyn goes along with what Thornberry said on the BBC last night about Labour needing to now campaign for Remain and how that will affect the result of a General Election if one is called. But I don’t know how anyone can call a clear majority for anything right now.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 27/05/2019 07:20

Stupid title and stupid reasoning.

Fatasfooook · 27/05/2019 07:21

There is definitely no confusion about the way scotland has voted.

TheAngryLlama · 27/05/2019 07:22

I didn’t watch much of it but Thornberry looked like a thundercloud. She went up in my estimation actually. Jezza will be getting a right tousling this morning.

Lifeover · 27/05/2019 07:23

Dippyavacado yes I’m a huge fan of diversity, proper diversity not the pseudo-on trend social media acceptable diversity many MN practice. I’m a fan of hearing other people’s properly thought out view points, it’s the way we learn, to grow. Interestingly when I’ve posted on other Brexit threads about issues I have contained in the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union and what this means for the future of the UKs position both within the EU had we voted remain and domestically regaling our own constitution no one is willing to engage. People aren’t willing to talk beyond the sound bites presented to them by the BBC/social media because people just don’t seem to have the capacity for critical analysis any more.

NicoAndTheNiners · 27/05/2019 07:23

How many people seriously thought I want to remain in Europe so I will vote Green

Er, me. Thats what that tactiacal voting remain website told me to vote for in my area.

Lwmommy · 27/05/2019 07:23

As of this morning, obviously more votes to come

BelindasGleeTeam · 27/05/2019 07:24

Right now we need to stop this ridiculous shite.

Economically and politically, Brexitbis impossible right now. It absolutely has to be delayed until the Ireland issue is sorted, until we have upgraded the correct border checks at ports etc.

Frankly, the thought of having to get in bed with Trump is frightening. He will not look after our interests or relationship, it's all about 'Murica. We will throw ourselves to the lions.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 27/05/2019 07:25

SNP will always win Scotland’s vote: do they even need to bother with a manifesto?!

I think last night proves the UK is still equally divided, a second referendum would solve nothing

Unfinishedkitchen · 27/05/2019 07:25

Even if Labour became a remain party I still would not vote for them whilst Corbyn is leader. It’s too late. I voted Labour every time apart from Thursday. Brexit is not something you can still be undecided on at the point.

What I am staggered by though is the North West’s love for Farage. A man who worships Margaret Thatcher and wants to introduce her policies on an even larger more hardcore scale? I thought Thatcher almost destroyed the NW, so what’s up with that?

DippyAvocado · 27/05/2019 07:25

Well I would agree with you on that point Lifeover but you certainly can't say that is only applicable to Remainers!!

Conks · 27/05/2019 07:27

You are deluded OP and as for Scotland needing to leave the UK to stay in the EU, do people not realise you’d need to apply and all other countries vote Yes ? That would never happen. Ever. Scotland doesn’t even meet the criteria to apply.

SunshineCake · 27/05/2019 07:28

I'm embarrassed for you, OP, if you are believing that the BBC are impartial on this.

Absolutepowercorrupts · 27/05/2019 07:28

@UnfinishedKitchen
It would have been quicker for you to type Plaid Cymru rather than that Welsh party, you know fewer letters to type. Just some more casual bigotry, nothing new there.

bluebluezoo · 27/05/2019 07:29

Who the fuck is voting for Farage?

Does not compute. How have we turned into a country that effectively voted for UKIP en masse?

DippyAvocado · 27/05/2019 07:30

So why is this brexit debatable

Because it was absolutely not clear what Brexiter was! The narrowness of the vote showed that the only possible compromise was a very soft Brexiter - EEA/Customs Union arrangement. That remains the only compromise option. No deal Brexiter was not even mentioned prior to the referendum and anyone who thinks this is a good idea clearly has zero concern for the younger generation who will have to put up with the devastating economic effects.

Unfinishedkitchen · 27/05/2019 07:31

For fucks sake, looking for offence when there isn’t one. I’m not bigoted against the Welsh. I couldn’t remember how to spell the name so it was easier to say Welsh party rather than spell it wrong (and then be accused of being offensive) so everyone would know who I was talking about. Jesus Christ.

DippyAvocado · 27/05/2019 07:32

Sorry, my phone has autocorrected Brexit to Brexiter.

twelly · 27/05/2019 07:32

It is not possible to infer from the results that remain supporters outnumber brexiters.

The brexit party was the party that won the most votes, all those who voted for them were brexiters , however not all brexiters voted this way. Some felt that it was better to vote for a party to represent them in the EU parliament and voted for one of the traditional parties. Some people did not view this election as a referendum on the EU and voted a party of protest or for one of choice.

I do not think we can infer that remainers outnumber brexiters or vice versa. What the results do show is that there is a huge support for the brexit party and that the view that the country has changed to remain does not hold water.

Although taken at 01 28

Mumofone1593 · 27/05/2019 07:42

I'm confused by everyone saying people who voted green were voting to remain? Not everything is about Brexit, there's a little thing called climate change!

AlexaAmbidextra · 27/05/2019 07:42

Leave have lost AGAIN.

You do understand that just because you keep saying it, it doesn’t mean it’s true? As someone said upthread, ‘and they say leavers are thick’?’ 🙄

Bloke23 · 27/05/2019 07:47

I voted leave in 2016, on Thursday I voted the green party, if there was another referendum I would still vote leave

DippyAvocado · 27/05/2019 07:48

The Green Party were vocal advocates of remain before the referendum and have been actively campaigning for a People's Vote. Caroline Lucas and Jonathan Bartley were on the People's Vote marches.

This is taken from their website:

Ahead of the 2016 referendum, the Green Party campaigned to Remain in the EU, and we’re going to continue to fight for the Britain we believe in.

In the years ahead, we’ll be pushing back on the Government’s plans for an extreme Brexit, and we’ll be campaigning for progressive social, economic and environmental outcomes across three priority areas.

We will also be calling for a vote on the terms of the deal, as we believe that the EU referendum of 2016 should be seen as the start of a democratic process, not the end of it.
