I know it looks as if Brexit have won but in every single case, if you add up all the votes secured by the other parties then together they have more votes than Brexit. That means more people want to remain in Europe than Leave.

To be delighted That Leave Have Lost

Erm, not sure how you came to that conclusion.

Leave didn't win. But neither did remain.

It is most definitely a stalemate which hasn't resolved anything and just shows we are further than ever from sorting out this country.

ScreamingLadySutch, not sure if you've noticed, but Africa isn't just one country. We can't just decide that we'll trade with Africa full stop.

ddl1 · 27/05/2019 10:24

I am relieved it's not worse. One thing people don't mention is that Brexit are basically replacing UKIP, who lost all their seats, rather than being a completely new force defeating the Remainers. The explicitly Remain parties did quite well, better than expected in some places. But I would be glad not to have the dreadful Nigel at all, throwing his weight around and embarrassing our country abroad. And a big ugh to Ann Widdecombe!

PeoniesarePink · 27/05/2019 10:26

I have high hopes today that Leaving will now happen.

Brexit was never about being shackled to the EU by invisible threads.

We voted out.

BertrandRussell · 27/05/2019 10:26

I’m pleased that the rise of the far right was not as bad as I was worried it might be. That’s at least something to be thankful for.

Isatis · 27/05/2019 10:27

We had a fair, democratic vote

Of course we didn't. The level of fraud within the Leave campaign was such that even May's government admitted that, had this happened in an election, the vote would have been set aside. The only reason it wasn't is that the referendum result was purely advisory and wasn't binding.

For that reason, I've never understood why the likes of May keep treating it as holy writ.

With the best will in the world all this shows is that the country is still as divided as it ever was over Brexit.

Isatis · 27/05/2019 10:28

Why can't you accept that people want to leave.

Because it very obviously is not true.

moonrises · 27/05/2019 10:28

Whilst I wouldn't say remain have won, I also wouldn't I say that the people have given a clear message that they want to leave. There are spin merchants on both sides.

Dongdingdong · 27/05/2019 10:28

Leave didn't win. But neither did remain.

The Brexit party have won the most seats in nine out of 10 areas counted. Of course they won. I voted remain in 2016 and would do so again, but there’s no point having your head in the sand.

It is quite amusing to think that this is one of the few political areas that politicians haven't flip flopped on.

But then none of them want to make an actual decision on what is going on or what is going to happen.

InTheHeatofLisbon · 27/05/2019 10:30

Isn't the point that since this entire shitshow began, nobody has had what they wanted?

Apart from Farage and Robinson who are delighted with the nasty divides they thrive on.

Leave voters didn't get what they wanted, remain voters didn't get what we wanted, and fuck all of any good has come from any of it!

ScreamingLadySutch · 27/05/2019 10:32

Isatis, your point is?

MY point is competitiveness and being friendly to African manufacturing efforts which the EU isn't. We can be more attractive to Africa IF we don't have absurd tariffs on their sugar (to protect the sugar beet industry), Coffee, cocoa etc . Whatever the country and not just in agricultural commodities.

In the international airport of Johannesburg (South Africa is seen as the gateway to other African economies), you look up at the board at the international departure flights. 7 of the 20 or so flights? London. 2 to Frankfurt.

We need to stop selling ourselves short. Britain is working actively on trade to Africa.

ScreamingLadySutch · 27/05/2019 10:34

this is an example of ad hominem slurs that Leavers really, really shouldn't stoop to.

Lets raise the tone of the debate and stick to facts rather than emotion.

  1. I wasn't talking about all leavers, I was talking specifically about Farage and Robinson, who have support from some who voted leave but not all.

  2. I voted remain.

Turns out it's not just Johnny who struggles with reading eh?

I quite specifically said that neither leave nor remain voters have had what they wanted.

But don't let that stop you eh?

Gigglinghysterically · 27/05/2019 10:39

@donotcovertheradiator

"There has got to be a People's Vote and the clear way for Remain to at last have the political will of the people heard is to have Remain as one option and then split Leave into 3 or 4 options. That will split the Leave vote leaving Remain the clear uncontested winner."
You think some PP insult your intelligence and then come up with this hare-brained scheme. Shock That's very democratic (said with a good deal of sarcasm).

Why don't we have Leave with one option and then split Remain into 3 or 4 options instead? Grin

OP, I hate to break it to you, as you clearly are totally unaware of it, but you are unintelligent.

Peregrina · 27/05/2019 10:40

For that reason, I've never understood why the likes of May keep treating it as holy writ.

And for her pains, she has seen a trouncing in the Local Elections and a trouncing in the EU elections. A GE might be different, but it would be very hard to make a prediction at the moment. Plus her own Premiership destroyed. Who knows whether she would have been more successful if she had steered a middle course?

Peregrina

May was frankly fucked whatever she did, Brexit is a poisoned chalice.

Leaving pisses off the remainers and some of the leavers.

staying pisses of the leavers.

There is not even a political win in this situation.

BertrandRussell · 27/05/2019 10:48

May’s huge mistake was triggering article 50 when she did.

NunoGoncalves · 27/05/2019 10:51

I have high hopes today that Leaving will now happen

Why did people think this was another leave/remain referendum?

ineedaholidaynow · 27/05/2019 10:52

But didn’t the EU say they wouldn’t open discussions until we triggered article 50?

MissUGirl · 27/05/2019 10:52

Scotland want to stay in the EU.

Does the EU want Scotland without the rest of the UK, though?
