DH lack of etiquette and social awareness

Deckchair1009 · 26/05/2019 22:45

Just managed a childfree break in London in the first time for about 5 years. Did loads of nice touristy stuff in preparation for my DH birthday soon. It’s a milestone one and he has loads of treats and “experiences” lined up. In fact, we started milking it a month ago and it’s going on til August! I don’t mind at all, he works hard and deserves to play hard. We went to a nice steakhouse in London and ordered like crazy off the menu. Chateubriand, cocktails, every side and starter you can think of. He sent back a bottle of wine because he didn’t like it and ordered a £80 substitute. He was the life and soul, chatting to fellow diners but went mad when I showed dismay at him eating the chateau Briand at the end of the meal with his hands! I appreciate this is ok with chicken and chops at home but in public, in a restaurant 🙈 He cannot see what’s wrong but it was like watching a Neanderthal! He maintains that if he’s paid £300 for a meal he should be allowed to eat as he likes. As he stormed out, I actually paid and, regardless, was expecting a bit of class without our young kids for a change. How can they learn social etiquette with a role modal like that?

Do what you fucking like, @LordPickle.

I was explaining what a batman was.

Most people, however, go to sort out tooth related issues in the bathroom so nobody has to see the plaque and food encrusted things on the table.

LordPickle · 27/05/2019 18:40

@MitziK That's exactly what I said he does. I give him a toothpick and he goes to the loo to sort himself out. Any sort of teeth picking at the table is foul.

Canuckduck · 27/05/2019 18:44

Eating a steak with your hands is bizarre. Was it an attempt to show off a bit?

Cersaj · 27/05/2019 18:50

How are there people who think eating a steak with your hands is okay?! It is disgusting, whether in an expensive restaurant or a pub or your home. It's not a sandwich!

YANBU OP.

Cersaj · 27/05/2019 18:51

The horror, imagine eating food with your hands. It's not a bowl of chips though, he's picking up a steak.

HundredMilesAnHour · 27/05/2019 19:01

I’m pretty sure Nigella would eat steak with her fingers

Nope. I've sat next to her in a restaurant and she used cutlery. Like normal people do. Well, apart from the OP's husband who just sounds like an classless oaf.

HundredMilesAnHour · 27/05/2019 19:06

I’ve been rocking my brains trying to think of a ‘steakhouse’ in London that would be so expensive.

Goodman or Hawksmoor. Do people still go to Gaucho? I thought it has just turned into a chain of tourist traps? But the £80 wine is definitely at the cheaper end of the wine list if it was Goodman.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 27/05/2019 19:11

Loving the excuse to show you dine somewhere where an £80 bottle of wine is at the cheaper end of the wine list.
Mumsnet at its finest.

Maybe on her TV show when she's fake raiding the fridge in the middle of the night for leftovers.

Not in an actual restaurant!

Yes indeed Grinyou could allow it of an Etonian and his mess - pretty much like any 14yr old- perhaps but a grown man? not for me.

Went to Gauchos in the city in my twenties once for NYE thinking it the height of sophistication but I put that down now to the novelty of having my hands dried and washed for me in the loos.

And being off my tits.

No. Reading far too much into a simple answer and massively overprojecting, now that's Mumsnet. Wink

Far2go46 · 27/05/2019 20:03

Oh my days, he's picking up steak LTB

Itwouldtakemuchmorethanthis · 27/05/2019 20:49

Grin oh yes let’s all scurry hard to the middle as fast as we can. I am obviously totally abnormal because I seriously wouldn’t care at all.

Hawksmoor Guildhall. The Chateauneuf du Pape is exactly £80. A wine he will have heard of.

Itwouldtakemuchmorethanthis · 28/05/2019 00:46

Surely if you don’t like the drink you’ve chosen then you just choose another if you can???Confused. This isn’t Brexit, you can change your mind.

OkPedro · 28/05/2019 01:13

Oh how the other half live 😂 I can’t believe the snobbery and ridiculousness on this thread. I think op posted this to show what it’s like on here sometimes

MissLadyM · 28/05/2019 01:27

He sounds like a real arsehole. Is he Del Boy?

CheshireChat · 28/05/2019 02:18

MitziK thank you for the batman explanation as all I could picture in my head was the PP's like, well, Batman. And was even more confused as if anyone was worthy of that title was her with her ninja toothpick.

I may need to get to sleep Grin.

I’m really enjoying the way people have narrowed down the restaurant and the wine choice.

I’d like to know what percentage of the bill you tipped. OP?

grumiosmum · 28/05/2019 19:42

Do you think he ordered the Chateauneuf because he thought it would complement the Chateaubriand?
