Surely we are not going to end up with Boris - apparently the bookies’ favourite Shock.

And if we do end up with Boris or someone as awful, what do you think that will then lead to? A no deal Brexit? A General Election?

I think the forthcoming political crisis might be worse than what we have yet seen. And I am not looking forward to the gruesome sight of the Tory leadership contest.

Arrogant and entitled.

I don't think two female interim leaders vs. two elected female leaders is much of a statistical basis to be accusing one of misogyny and not the other.

Alsohuman · 26/05/2019 09:39

Completely agree, @Lakielady. What did Bevan say about the Tories?

Didiusfalco · 26/05/2019 09:41

Just read about Rory Stewart following this thread. He sounds amazing - they’ll never pick him. Which is stupid really as I could see him having much wider appeal than Johnson if they want to pick up the floating voters.

VoteJadot · 26/05/2019 09:49

Haha Didiusfalco, I thought for a second you meant you read somewhere that he was following this thread!

They had Margaret Beckett as caretaker leader at one point

Caretaker leader and yet still not a women leading the party Labour once again have a man as deputy leader

Labour did far better than expected in the last election but we hadn’t really seen the fall out of Brexit and how badly led they party has been and of course we all know that Corbyn would like to leave the EU so has happily sat on the fence while others (Keir Starmer and Yvette Cooper to name two ) have pushed for a more decisive stance but it’s not happened

Labour will along with the Tories lost voters to Libdem and the Brexit Party

That’s what I thought, too!!

What did Bevan say about the Tories?

That they are "lower than vermin".

LakieLady · 26/05/2019 10:30

I think the problem for Labour women is that the most able of them have tended to be on the right of the party, with a few notable exceptions (Clare Short, Alice Mahon, Mo Mowlem). Yvette Cooper is brilliant, but will never rid herself of the Blairite taint; Jess Phillips is shrewd, tough, witty and smart but definitely on the right.

Alison McGovern would make a good leader imo: very bright and articulate.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 26/05/2019 10:33

The Tories always have been far better at at gaining power and staying in power they don’t tend to allow in fighting to spoil the chance of staying in power. What we are seeing at present is unlike any other time in recent history but when they have their new leader and an election is called they absolutely will pull together to stay in power

We are a country of mainly conservatives with a small ‘c’ our politics isn’t as divisive as in most of Europe

Lower than vermin Hmm there are good Tory and Labour MP’s and there are bad ones

Alsohuman · 26/05/2019 10:56

Lower than vermin sounds fair to me. Thank you @Lakielady.

ForalltheSaints · 27/05/2019 19:17

Vermin was not a good insult and the low point of Nye Bevan’s career.

Comparing Boris Johnson to any animal is wrong. We should respect the animal kingdom.
