To ask is going to be next Tory leader?

Surely we are not going to end up with Boris - apparently the bookies’ favourite Shock.

And if we do end up with Boris or someone as awful, what do you think that will then lead to? A no deal Brexit? A General Election?

I think the forthcoming political crisis might be worse than what we have yet seen. And I am not looking forward to the gruesome sight of the Tory leadership contest.

Arrogant and entitled.

Most of my social circle are Tory supporters but I have never ever spoken to someone who thinks Boris is fit to be PM. I believe he's not that popular amongst fellow MPs too. So who exactly wants him to be leader?

TheClitterati · 25/05/2019 11:00

Wouldn't it be wonderful to have a strong opposition party With a strong leader, about now?

Figmentofmyimagination · 25/05/2019 11:07

Wouldn’t it be great not to have our next pm decided by 100,000 wealthy mainly male white voters, average age 57, but 40% aged over 65?

It’s amazing that even though the prospect of boris has been staring the country in the face for months, moderate centrists have not been flocking to join the Conservative party to stop this. Compare the number who joined the Labour Party to elect Jeremy Corbyn.

Figmentofmyimagination · 25/05/2019 11:09

Not saying that electing JC was a good idea - just odd, the difference in willingness to join a party. It can’t be just about cost. It must be about the psychology of joining to stop something.

badlydrawnperson · 25/05/2019 11:10

Tories - the party is more important than anything. ergggghhh. Who cares who is leader? What is more important is how it is that they can trash the country and keep getting away with it. Tossers.

AlunWynsKnee · 25/05/2019 11:14

I reckon Jeremy Hunt might get it. I'm not a Conservative and I can't stand him but he hasn't done anything awful if you like the policies he's implemented.

longwayoff · 25/05/2019 11:18

Christ on a bike, when results come out tomorrow the swivel eyed loons will be carrying Farage to Downing St. I shudder to think what will happen. None of those willing to stand appear fit to lead this country, it's all very depressing.

ethelfleda · 25/05/2019 11:19

It’ll be Boris
Then we will have a GE
Farage will win a shite load of seats and form a coalition with the Torys.
And I will emigrate.

ProudAunty2nine · 25/05/2019 11:20

Loosing the will to live with this never ending nightmare, but just really hope Esther McVey does not get anywhere near it, female form of IDS .. so not good for the more vulnerable in the country

MRex · 25/05/2019 11:31

Rory Stewart seems like a great option, he comes across as being an actually decent man.

I would have thought Dominic Raab would have a better chance with Brexiteers than Boris Johnson, apart from being notorious I'm unclear what he offers anyone.

Penny Mordaunt seems to the the best of the female candidates, but I don't know enough about her to know if I'd like or hate her.

What I can't believe is how many MPs are supporting Hunt. I'm actually amazed he has 17 people who like him in the whole country, never mind amongst just MPs. There are good reasons for his nickname.

MRex · 25/05/2019 11:32

Oh, and Esther McVey is utterly awful, she's nearly as bad as Hunt.

Figmentofmyimagination · 25/05/2019 11:34

Alun Jeremy Hunt hasn’t a hope because 60% of CP members want a hard brexit - leaving without a deal. If it didn’t go to the members, then hunt would win imo but before the members he has no chance.

Figmentofmyimagination · 25/05/2019 11:36

Rory Stewart hasn’t a hope either, because of his moderate stance on brexit and refusal to countenance leaving without a deal. Even though he ticks the Armed forces box which CP members love.

Figmentofmyimagination · 25/05/2019 11:39

I always thought it would be Raab as he looks the part and will appeal to the coffee-morning-holding-charity-quiz-organising wing of the CP. Really didn’t foresee the Johnson come back. It’s all so febrile. Quite frightening, given the politics of these people and their power. How did it come to this?

Etino · 25/05/2019 11:40

@MissEliza and others, Rory Stewart is very competent and likeable, but as @Figmentofmyimagination has said too remain. As a labour voter I’m torn. I want someone competent but not competent enough to win the next election. And I want to remain.

AlunWynsKnee · 25/05/2019 11:46

Fair point Fig. I plainly don't think like a Conservative party member :)

AngelicInnocent · 25/05/2019 11:49

Final 2 will be Gove and Leadsom. Not sure which will win.

MarniLou · 25/05/2019 11:50

Working in education NOT Michael Gove. He has caused irreparable damage to our schools.

The education of our children is a disgrace.

If it's Michael, I'm leaving the country! I just don't think I can live with that.

Figmentofmyimagination · 25/05/2019 11:53

Remain campaigners like Gina Miller should have used some of their resources on a campaign to encourage moderate people to hold their nose and join the Conservative party. Too late now.

MissEliza · 25/05/2019 11:54

I've always admired Rory Stewart but unfortunately he doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell.

VladmirsPoutine · 25/05/2019 11:56

Amber Rudd would be good. Don't think she's in the running though.

AlunWynsKnee · 25/05/2019 12:20

I've been through the list again bearing in mind Fig's point I say one of Boris, Gove, Hunt or Brady. As much as I dislike Gove he did make a very good speech when Labour called the no confidence vote on the government.
Does whoever wins have to sort out another deal with the DUP?

Tavannach · 25/05/2019 12:30

Rory Stewart rules out serving with Boris Johnson. I do like his style, not at all bad for a Tory.

from The Independent

wheresmymojo · 25/05/2019 12:37

I joined the Conservative party a couple of months ago so I could at least be involved in picking the least bad option. I fear though that the choices will be BoJo or Raab and I really think both are shit.

It's only ÂŁ2 per month to join but you needed to have joined three months before the vote on the two contenders.

wheresmymojo · 25/05/2019 12:40

I agree that Esther McVey is truly awful. The interviews I've heard with her have made me cringe. She's not just awful, she's a liar and IMO not terribly bright.

The only thing she has is decent hair. That's it Hmm
