To ask is going to be next Tory leader?

Surely we are not going to end up with Boris - apparently the bookies’ favourite Shock.

And if we do end up with Boris or someone as awful, what do you think that will then lead to? A no deal Brexit? A General Election?

I think the forthcoming political crisis might be worse than what we have yet seen. And I am not looking forward to the gruesome sight of the Tory leadership contest.

Arrogant and entitled.

So much for our previous 'democracy' that the 'leave' voters bleat on about. No democracy in who we will be stuck with as our next PM.

MarniLou · 25/05/2019 14:43

* precious fgs auto correct

ChariotsofFish · 25/05/2019 14:44

I can seriously see if creating a constitutional crisis. Boris wins, goes to the queen, there’s a no confidence vote which he loses the next day. What does the queen do? Ask Corbyn to attempt to form a minority government?

grumpyyetgorgeous · 25/05/2019 14:53

What about Andrea Leadsome? Yes she's firmly "leave" but from the bit I've read about her, it seems like she might just have a clue about how to proceed after we've actually left.

My preference would be Rory Stewart too.

fedup21 · 25/05/2019 14:53

@shartsi - I know the phrase is "anything can happen in politics" but of all the things Corbyn might become, next Tory leader seems amongst the most unlikely.

Grin.

I can seriously see if creating a constitutional crisis. Boris wins, goes to the queen, there’s a no confidence vote which he loses the next day.

So, how does it work then. The Tory party members (normal folk who are just paid up members) vote for Tory leader, BUT a no confidence vote would be carried out by Tory MPs?

Lizzie48 · 25/05/2019 14:53

I think it will be Johnson, sadly. I always thought he was nothing but a buffoon; I haven’t changed my mind, but he’d be a very dangerous one if the Tories voted him in.

Villanellesproudmum · 25/05/2019 14:55

I also think Andrea is a likely option.

Harebel · 25/05/2019 14:56

I think Matt Hancock has a good chance.

NoYo · 25/05/2019 15:00

As a leaver, I'd prefer Andrea Leadsom or Dominic Raab over Boris. I let my membership lapse though so unable to vote.

TidyDancer · 25/05/2019 15:13

Oh God, there's really no good option. Perhaps Rory Stewart is the least worst but the list of potentials is pretty much a human garbage tip. This is really exposing some of the party members for what they are, when you have to contemplate one of them being in charge it's a really scary concept.

tobee · 25/05/2019 15:18

I can't stand Leadsom. I'd be surprised if she got it because she's a woman. And Tories are misogynists.

Alsohuman · 25/05/2019 15:21

Leadsom won’t get it. Her “because l’m a mother” schtik will come back and bite her.

Lizzie48 · 25/05/2019 15:26

Yes, Tories are misogynists, but it hasn’t stopped two women from becoming PM, so Andrea Leadsome probably isn’t all that handicapped by being a woman.

I don’t like her, though, she’s far too pro Brexit.

ChariotsofFish · 25/05/2019 15:28

@fedup21 The Tories don’t have a majority in the House of Commons. And they have a handful of MPs who haven’t completely taken leave of their senses. Boris could easily lose a no confidence vote. He can make promises to the DUP, but ultimately those promises would be seen as betrayal by the crazed Brexiteers he needs to put him in power.

TheGardenFairy · 25/05/2019 15:39

It will be a leave voter. As it stands Boris is favourite. I'm rooting for Andrea Leadsome.

Decormad38 · 25/05/2019 16:01

We really are all doomed!

tobee · 25/05/2019 16:13

Yes but May didn't face a contest @Lizzie48

jewel1968 · 25/05/2019 16:15

Have a funny feeling Rory will get it. ..

cardibach · 25/05/2019 16:30

It’s desperate. These odds may help. Boris is all the bad things other posters have detailed and also doesn’t be,Ive the rules apply to him. He says nobody follows speed limits and the de facto speed limit in the country is 99mph because you might lose your licence at 100.

To ask is going to be next Tory leader?
PickleC · 25/05/2019 16:33

The really tricky thing is that all the rumours are that most Tory MPs don't like or trust Boris. Can't think why. I mean it isn't as if he has ever put himself above party and country, repeatedly made racist comments and showed zero aptitude as foreign secretary. But if they can't coalesce around two alternatives then we are totally stuffed because if it goes to the members with him as one of the two options then it a dead cert for Boris. I just hope to god there is an alternative because no deal would be an utter disaster.

Not seen any surveys yet to see how wider voters view possible candidates though. That would be interesting. Not easy picking the least worst option mind.

DroningOn · 25/05/2019 16:41

I can see it going like this

BoJo... No deal exit..... General election.... Tory minority again....

CaptainJaneway62 · 25/05/2019 16:44

There are over 66M people in the UK and this is the best we can come up with to 'lead the country?!'(using the term very loosely!).
It's not about leading the country at all it's about wanting the top job!..none of which are fit for the role.

Boris Johnson - Fickle, indolent
Jeremy Hunt - Hateful, Liar
Esther McVey - Compulsive liar, Thick as a plank.
Nigel Farage - Fickle, Likes his EU cushy job waaay too much

Alsohuman · 25/05/2019 16:47

Farage isn’t even in the running given that he’s not even a Tory.

ChariotsofFish · 25/05/2019 16:56

Someone should send this thread to Conservative MPs. They’ve used MN to try and win elections before and Rory seems to be a pretty clear favourite here. Please do something sensible MPs.

CrotchetyQuaver · 25/05/2019 17:15

I think nothing can be assumed or taken for granted until we know the UK results of the Euro elections. If the brexit party have done as well as some predict, anything could happen.

@havannaa I don't think goods will be stuck in limbo, they would change to clearing customs according to WTO rules until such time as a trade deal is reached or not
