AIBU to think it's perfectly fine to not shower everyday?

The Loose Women were mortified when Stacey Solomon and Saira Khan revealed that they did not shower everyday....the latter only once or twice a week. AIBU To think it's fine not to shower every day? I certainly don't unless the weather's dead hot. Surely got to be good for the environment, water bills and skin to not be running the shower everyday. False vanity by the Loose Women maybe?

I don’t think many people are. You can get clean without standing under a shower.

motherheroic · 23/05/2019 18:01

@SerenDippitty That has been established. I'm obviously talking about those that shower once or twice a week with absolutely nothing in between.

Aprillygirl · 23/05/2019 18:03

Can't believe people are on here bragging about not washing their fanny and arse for most of the week

MotherHEROIC has a problem with people bragging about themselves Grin

Pinkvoid · 23/05/2019 18:04

I think some people naturally smell more than others. If my DP skips his morning shower he absolutely reeks by the afternoon and that’s with good deodorant. Some people need to wash daily, others can skip a day and be fine.

Lanaa · 23/05/2019 18:14

The problem is that most people can't actually smell themselves until they start to smell like a bucket of decaying onions and tuna. Before the true stench emerges, there's an awful musty smell that the I only wash every other day brigade mask with cheap perfume. It's vile.

Vulpine · 23/05/2019 18:17

Motherheroic I'll be honest not many people go near my fanny or arse

goingonabearhunt1 · 23/05/2019 18:19

My family always try and tell me this 'washing every day is bad for you' malarkey and I just ignore them. I live in a city, I'm always moving about so I want to shower every day. Not saying I don't care about the environment but a shower can be very quick and just makes me feel so much better (I only wash my hair every other day though).

IcedPurple · 23/05/2019 18:21

Oh FFS!

I mostly shower daily - not because I 'need' it but because I like it - but sometimes I only shower every other day. And there is absolutely no way you would know that from a casual encounter. There is no 'smell' to 'mask' and I never ever wear cheap perfume.

The idea that you can tell how often someone showers from being in the same train or the same office as them is pure MN nonsense.

goingonabearhunt1 · 23/05/2019 18:21

My DM is also always going on about not using disinfectant/cleaning sprays but I will continue using them in my kitchen (in moderation) because I don't think it's clean otherwise.

Sashkin · 23/05/2019 18:21

I'd never heard of 'strip washing' until I came on here. Just get in the shower

You realise not everybody has a shower, or is mobile enough to use it without assistance?

I have lots of older patients who can't stand in the shower, or who can't reach to wash themselves without assistance. A carer comes in to help them once or twice a week, and the rest of the time they strip wash too. Most of them don't smell, the ones that do generally smell of urine because they are incontinent (so would smell pretty quickly after a shower too). What do you think happens to patients who are bedbound? They are strip washed in bed. They don't smell either.

And PMSL at the person who thinks she can smell lingering vagina smells in public toilets. I'm not sure what she is smelling, but it ain't vagina. Realistically it's more likely to be shit, isn't it?

goingonabearhunt1 · 23/05/2019 18:22

I do sometimes skip a days shower in the winter or if I haven't moved all day though, just to add.

DesperadoDan · 23/05/2019 18:24

I work in a smelly food environment, lots of frying and grease, I have to shower everyday, the smell sticks to my nostril hairs and makes me feel nauseous once I get home. Hair is tied up at work but still gets a bit pongy, I wash it every 3 days despite it not being greasy.
If I have time off I bath every other day and wash hair every 4/5 days.
Each to their own I say, some people sweat more than others or have oilier skin and scalps.
It’s rare to come across somebody who really stinks these days.

Sashkin · 23/05/2019 18:25

Maybe that smell is actually....cheap perfume?

Or mildew from badly dried clothes or towels, that does have a musty smell. Totally unrelated to lack of showering though (in fact if it's transferring from damp towels, showering more is likely to make it worse).

birdonawire1 · 23/05/2019 18:25

Surely if you wash your face, armpits, feet and privates you wouldn't smell. I shower every 2 -3 days and wash the others. More in really hot weather, but my skin starts to feel dry and itchy if it's daily.

Runkle · 23/05/2019 18:26

I can actually smell vagina in toilets too. It's disgusting and definitely not shit, shit smells like shit.

Vulpine · 23/05/2019 18:29

Blimey runkle with olfactory powers like that you should become a sniffer dog. Can you smell dirty penis too?

User8888888 · 23/05/2019 18:30

I’m one of the people that doesn’t sweat and get BO (also don’t really have earwax which is meant to be linked) but I still feel grim if I don’t have a shower every day. I can’t imagine going to work having not washed properly. Once a week is just vile really.

Runkle · 23/05/2019 18:31

Thanks, I'll consider it Hmm. Why would I lie about that, I genuinely can.

megrichardson · 23/05/2019 18:33

so can I, @Runkle

Delatron · 23/05/2019 18:45

I can smell it too. Sorry.

And there is a musty smell to people if they haven’t washed for days. Just like you can smell someone who is fresh out of a shower (lovely clean fresh smell).

Bringonspring · 23/05/2019 18:48

Totally have to shower everyday!

YesQueen · 23/05/2019 18:50

Yes @Sashkin I cared for a lot of people and none smelt because they were properly washed by me and a colleague, even if bedbound
I didn't shower this morning and I smell of Byredo Gypsy Water definitely NOT cheap perfume. My colleague said I smell of lemons 🤷🏽‍♀️

Bringonspring · 23/05/2019 18:50

Runkle is it not more likely that you smell sanitary bins

Wait on actual fact this isn’t a conversation I want to peruse as it’s almost dinner time

megrichardson · 23/05/2019 18:50

There's also a slight grime on people who haven't washed for a day or two - I am aware of it on a couple of people at work. For example around their cuticles.

IcedPurple · 23/05/2019 18:53

There's also a slight grime on people who haven't washed for a day or two - I am aware of it on a couple of people at work.

But how do you know this 'grime' is because they don't shower every day? Do you ask them?

And assuming you don't work in a nudist camp, you're likely not seeing much of your colleagues other than their hands and face. Are you suggesting they also go days without washing either of the above? Hence the 'grime'?
